Learn to fix your sewing machine

Here's some frugal shame for you: I bought a sewing machine years ago... and it's still in the box.

I just haven't made the decision to learn how to use it yet. I bet that it's not all that difficult to sew basic items, but I just haven't made it a priority to learn. And the complexity of today's sewing machines does scare me a little. What if I do something wrong?

So besides some basic sewing lessons, I really need this class from Craftsy: Sewing Machine 911!

Taught by Claudia Miller, in this class you'll learn how to diagnose your machine’s symptoms and how to easily fix the most common issues, including jammed machines, top thread breaks, needle breaks, and more. Claudia also explains the basic parts and functions of every machine.

And best of all, it's a free class! (Woohoo, I love free stuff!)

Quilting lessons with Craftsy

I have a bunch of old T-shirts that one day I want to turn into a quilt, but right now are just taking up room in my closet.  Although I'm very good at crocheting, and I can knit a little, I've never tried to do quilting.

So I was excited to find out that Craftsy has a new online class: The Craftsy Block of the Month.  It's a completely free, year-long online class. There are 12 installments, each one posted on the first day of every month. The first 10 months/installments teach students two new exciting blocks (brand new designs or funky spins on traditional blocks). The last two months are dedicated to finishing the quilt. At the end of the class, students will have full-size and one-of-a-kind quilts.

Like all of Craftsy's classes, students can view it whenever it’s convenient for them, and can watch them however many times they’d like. It’s filmed in high-definition, and it’s fully interactive.
Check out Craftsy to find out more about the Block of the Month class, as well as some great daily deals for crafters!

    Learn to quilt

Although I'm very good at crocheting, and I can knit a little, one craft skill that has eluded me so far is quilting. I'd love to give it a try, but I just don't know where to begin.

      Free quilting online class

I have dozens of old T-shirts from my college years sitting in a box in my closet .  At some point I hope to make a T-shirt quilt out of them.  But I have absolutely no idea where to begin to make one.

So I was excited to read that Craftsy has a new online class: The Craftsy Block of the Month.  Each month, Craftsy will give online classes on techniques used in quilting.  It's a FREE class that's suitable both for newbies like me and for experienced quilters alike.

Help for your financial New Year's resolutions

Are you making a New Year's resolution to get your finances under control?

LearnVest is running a 10-day Take Control Bootcamp. This 10-day email program gives you daily to-dos to achieve your financial goals.
        • Discover where you're really spending
        • Create a budget that you can actually stick to
        • Dream big and set financial goals you can achieve
I'm taking the bootcamp - I'm on Day 4, Discovering Your Spending Patterns.

This is a big problem at the Frugal Follies household.  We are pretty frugal on the big-ticket items, but still tend to spend money on small items here and there, particularly food eaten out of the house. I'm hoping this lesson will help me figure out which expenditures help us meet our life goals, and which ones are dragging us down.

Please join me as we learn to take control of our expenditures!
Click here to sign up for the boot camp and the LearnVest newsletter.

            Free coupon e-course

Free Coupon E CourseAre you new to couponing (maybe from watching "Extreme Couponing") and looking to learn the best ways to save money? Or are you experienced in couponing, but want to freshen up your skills?

Claire over at Saving Money Plan is starting her free coupon e-course again.  The first class is tomorrow, April 8th.  I followed her lessons the last time she offered the course, and I was very impressed with the quality of the lessons.  She starts out with some simple deals with the week's deals at the national drug stores, so pretty much everyone can try out her scenarios.  As your skills improve, as do the complexity of the lessons and the deals.

So if you're new to couponing, or just want to make sure you haven't missed anything, give the free coupon e-course a try!

Free coupon eCourse Week 1: CVS Extra Care Bucks

I got the first class of the free coupon ecourse being hosted by Claire over at Saving Money Plan.  It's a ten-week class, where each week's lesson is emailed directly to your inbox each Monday.

This week's class explains CVS's Extra Care Bucks program, and how you can get free items without cutting any coupons. It's definitely an easy introduction to the system; I recommend it!

I won't be doing the lesson today, though, as I already purchased several of the items in it myself on Sunday.  I guess I wanted to get a jump on the class!

So if you haven't signed up, do it now!
