Nature Valley Breakfast Biscuits Review

Disclosure: The information and prize pack have been provided by General Mills through Platefull Co-Op.

I always want to give my kids a healthy breakfast.  But some mornings, we get a late start, and there's just not enough time to get in a homemade, hearty breakfast.

That's why I was glad to hear about Nature Valley Breakfast Biscuits. Each package of Nature Valley Breakfast Biscuits has 4 delicious biscuits packed with 26 grams of whole grain energy to keep you going, no matter where your day takes you.  They're located in the cookie aisle of major supermarkets, including Publix.

Be on the lookout for exclusive savings on Nature Valley Breakfast Biscuits at Publix. Here's a great printable coupon for 50¢ off Nature Valley Breakfast Biscuits.  Combine 2 printings of this coupon with a buy one, get one free sale to save even more!

I gave the blueberry flavor of Nature Valley Breakfast Biscuits a try.  They come in 5 individually-wrapped package to keep them fresh, 4 biscuits to a package.  I was expecting a biscuit, but these are more like English biscuits - that is, cookies.  I was happy to see that the product contains no trans fats, no high fructose corn syrup, and no artificial flavors.

I thought they tasted good enough to be a snack, not breakfast.  The blueberries were chewy and flavorful and the cookie was crunchy.  They were definitely yummy!

On the down side, I noticed that both sugar and honey are ingredients; sugar was the third most common ingredient and honey was the sixth.  I have to wonder if they were both listed as a single ingredient, it would be the top ingredient in the biscuit.  I try to avoid having overly sweet breakfasts for my kids.  And despite the cookies having 26 grams of whole grains, they didn't strike me as being particularly filling as a breakfast.

So I think these biscuits would be a great, healthy snack, especially a morning snack, but I really doubt that I would use them to replace a child's breakfast.

But they are definitely delicious, so I recommend them as a great morning snack!

Purex Crystals Fresh Mountain Breeze Review & Giveaway

The Purex brand provided me with a sample of Purex Crystals Fresh Mountain Breeze exchange for a product review.  However, all the opinions expressed here are my own.

I do lots of laundry.  With three active big kids, I pretty much spend all of Sunday sorting, running, and folding laundry.  And I want it to smell nice and fresh!

So I was really excited to give Purex Crystal Fresh Mountain Breeze a try.  I've tried other Purex Crystals products, and I know that they're great.  But would this product meet those high standards?

The folks at Purex let me know that the new Purex Crystals Fresh Mountain Breeze help clothes smell fresh for weeks, not just days.  The product doesn't reduce the absorbency of towels.  And its natural formula is safe for your family and for the environment, too!

So I ran a big load of musty, smelly towels.  Before I started washing, I opened up the bottle of Purex Crystals and took a sniff.  I immediately sensed a fresh, clean scent, one that you would definitely associate with clean clothes.  I sprinkled in some of the crystals and ran my wash as normal.

When I removed the clean, dry towels from the dryer, I could smell that great scent on the towels.  It wasn't overpowering, but when I put my nose to the towels, it smelled great!  I folded them up and put them in the linen closet.

Several days later, I took an unused towel from that load and smelled it.  The smell had disperses a bit, but the towel was definitely still smelling fresh and clean!  Wow!

So I definitely recommend Purex Crystals Fresh Mountain Breeze to keep your laundry smelling fresh!

Would you like to try Purex Crystals Fresh Mountain Breeze?  You can find the product at many local supermarkets, drug stores, and national chain stores.  Check out the Purex store locator to find a store near you.  And you can learn more about the Purex brand on the Purex Facebook page.

Or would you like to try it for free?

Frugal Follies is hosting a giveaway for a free product coupon for Purex Crystals Fresh Mountain Breeze!

Three winners will be chosen.  Each winner will receive one coupon for a free 28 oz bottle of Purex Crystals Fresh Mountain Breeze.  This is a manufacturer's coupon and expires on 06/30/2014.  It has a maximum value of $6.00. GE reveal® Light Bulb Review

Thanks to GE for providing two 4-packs of  GE reveal® 75W halogen light bulbs for this review free of charge!

It's so important to have good lighting in your home, don't you think?  What's the point of making a beautiful home if you can't see it very well?

My house has always had a lighting problem.  The living, dining, and family rooms are just one big gigantic room, so there aren't many walls where light can reflect.  So while it's light right near the lamps, it tends to get quite dark in the middle areas of my home.

So I was excited to give GE reveal® 75W halogen light bulbs a try in my home.

I was fascinated to learn that the light from the GE reveal® bulb brings out the colors and patterns that may normally go unnoticed under standard incandescent light. I never realized that a change in bulb might cause my house to look better! (I wonder if the bulbs can get rid of clutter, too? No, I guess not. Oh, well.)

And I love that these halogen light bulbs are energy-efficient! GE energy-efficient reveal® bulbs use 28% less energy than regular incandescent Reveal® bulbs. And that means lower energy bills. Now, you know I love that!

So here are my before-and-after pictures:

 Before GE reveal® makeover

As you can see, even with two lamps, there are some dark shadows in my living room.  The lamp on the right isn't projecting light from the top of the lamp.  And these lamps had 100W incandescent bulbs in them.  Now, let's see the difference with the 75W GE reveal® bulbs.

 After GE reveal® makeover

Much better!  (It looked even better in person, take my word for it!)  There are fewer shadows, and the lamp on the right is projecting light throughout the room.  The area was more brighter than before.  I think you can see the pattern on the couch much more clearly than in the first picture.

So I love my lighting makeover.  Now on to replace the rest of the bulbs in the room - although with better light, I may see more dirt, which means I'll have to clean more often.  Oh, well, you can't win them all!

Would you like to try GE reveal® halogen bulbs?  Learn more about them on the GE reveal® website, and find stores in your area where these bulbs are sold.

And you can save on your purchase as well!  Print a coupon for GE reveal® bulbs.

Hope this helps you light your home better at a lower cost!

Busy creative family breakfasts

Disclosure: The information and prize pack have been provided by General Mills through Platefull Co-Op.

We all know that breakfast is an important start to your family’s day, but all too often, it’s rushed, hectic, and…monotonous. So what can be done to make breakfast a little more delightful and fun?

Here are a few great ideas from Target to make your quick but fun breakfasts for your family!

I received a big box filled with yummy breakfast foods from Target and General Mills (including
Nature Valley® Protein Granola, Nature Valley® Granola Bars, Honey Nut Cheerios® Medley Crunch™ cereal, Trix® cereal, Quaker® Oats, Jif® peanut butter,  Nutella® mini cups, and Grandma Hoerner’s® Big Slice™ apples snack), and I was challenged to come up with my own yummy, quick family breakfast.  Here's what I came up with:

I started with a nice, healthy bowl of Quaker oatmeal.  I added cinnamon and just a touch of brown sugar.  Then, I topped the oatmeal with Grandma Hoerner’s® Big Slice™ cherry-vanilla apples.  Yum!

Simply 7 Snacks Review and Giveaway

My kids come home from school hungry.  Two of them have lunch while it's still morning, so by the mid-afternoon their tummies are growling, and the first words out of their mouths are "Mom, do we have any snacks?"

Of course, they want something yummy, but I want them to have a healthy snack.  That's one reason I was excited to find out about Simply 7 Snacks!

The founders of Simply 7 started their company because of a distressing trend they noticed in their local grocery stores: food made with ingredients that most people don’t recognize and can’t even pronounce. The idea behind Simply 7 products is ingredients that are natural and simple - you should be able to identify the raw vegetable, fruit, grain, or legume the ingredients in their products come from. They also wanted to show people that simple ingredients are actually exceptionally delicious.

I received a huge box full of 10 different full-sized bags of Simply 7 Snacks:
  • Hummus Chips: Sea Salt, Tomato Basil, Spicy Chili Pepper, and Roasted Red Pepper varieties
  • Lentil Chips: Sea Salt, Creamy Dill, Jalapeno, and Bruschetta varieties
  • Pomegranate Chips: Sea Salt, Black Pepper, and White Cheddar varieties

Checking out the packages, I was happy to see that the ingredient labels were indeed very simple.  No hard to pronounce "food" items listed!  For instance, the Lentil Chips with Sea Salt has the following ingredients: lentil flour, potato starch, expeller pressed safflower oil, and sea salt.  That's it.  No preservatives or artificial flavors.

Even a more complicated flavor like the Spicy Chili Pepper Hummus Chips had a longer, but still easily understandable, ingredient list: chickpea flour, potato starch, expeller pressed safflower oil, corn flour, salt, whey powder, garlic powder, sugar, spices, onion powder, dehydrated red bell pepper, olive oil, sesame oil, natural flavors, paprika extract.  No artificial colors to make the beautiful orange-red color of the chips!

Best of all, there are no trans fats and no GMOs in these snacks.  Many varieties are also gluten-free!

But, of course, none of that matters if the snacks don't taste good.  So I did a taste test with my kids, with three of the varieties and some dips.

The kids really loved the Creamy Dill Lentil chips.  They went well with creamy, sour-cream based dips like an onion dip.  The dill flavor really shined through.  And the shape was great for scooping up dip!

The Sea Salt Hummus Chips were also a big hit.  The kids thought they went best with - you guessed it - hummus!  But I think the spicier hummus chip varieties would go well with a bean dip.  Again, the scoop shape made it easy for the kids to scoop up a healthy snack!

The Pomegranate White Cheddar variety, unfortunately, didn't go over all that well.  The combination of the pomegranate and white cheddar was very different... but my kids didn't care for the pomegranate part of the chip.  I could see where these Sea Salt Pomegranate Chips might be delicious with a fruit salsa, though.

Overall, we really loved the Hummus and Lentil chip varieties, and we'll be eating them for some time to come!

Would you like to try Simply 7 products?  Check out the Simply 7 store locator to find them in a store near you - I found them at some independent nutrition stores.  Learn more about them at their website or on Facebook.

Cheap, delicious holiday meals from ALDI

Thanks to ALDI for providing a gift certificate to facilitate this review!  All opinions are my own.

I love shopping at ALDI!  I love the great prices, of course, but there's so much more to love about ALDI.  I love the small store size - no getting exhausted running all the way across the store to get an item you forgot to pick up.  It's so easy to shop there with kids because of the size as well.  Plus, they love to put the quarter in to take out the cart, and then to get the quarter back when putting the cart away.

ALDI usually only has one brand of an item, but to tell the truth, the lack of choice is a blessing in disguise - fewer choices to make means less stress.  And all of the house brand items I've tried have been just as delicious as a name brand.  Their dairy and produce items are of great quality and are a lot cheaper than those at the supermarket!

If I had to pick out one fault of ALDI, it would be that it just doesn't carry certain items.  But if you're shopping for everything you need for your holiday meal, that's not true right now!

The ALDI Happier Holidays catalog lists lots of great items you can get to make your perfect holiday meal! The catalog contains not only food, but also kitchen items and toys!

Check out the great prices on these stand mixers!  I may just have to go get myself one.

And for last-minute shoppers, ALDI also has great deals on toys, like this pretend food.

But, of course, the food reigns supreme!  I started wondering if I could make a great holiday meal just from items found at ALDI. If I were making a holiday meal solely from ALDI items, here's what I would make!

I'd start the meal with wine and cheese.  I do love the ALDI Moscato wine that's available all year round, but for a special meal, I'd start with this Petit Chocolat Wine imported from Germany.  Red wine with chocolate mixed in - how unusual and special.

I would pair the wine with these interesting special cheeses - Horseradish Cheddar and Mango Fire Cheddar.  And I would use the great ALDI crackers as well!

The main course for dinner would be a boneless turkey breast.  So easy to make and slice - no worrying about all the bones!

I'd serve that with stuffing - ALDI has lots of different kinds of mixes at this time of year.  Buy a few extra and put them away for future meals - these and many of the other holiday meal items are seasonal.  They'll be gone after the holidays, not to return again until next holiday season!

I'd serve the meal with a fresh tossed salad.  I love buying the on-sale produce items each week at ALDI.  I buy 2-3 weeks' worth of the sale items, which should take me through to the next sale for that item.

I'd add some sort of bread as well, like these rolls.  I buy my bread at ALDI - plenty fresh, and lots cheaper than the grocery store!

For dessert, I couldn't decide between these two items: The Belmont Supreme Cheesecake Sampler and the Belmont Petite Cheesecake Sampler.  Both look amazingly delicious!

What a delicious meal - I'm stuffed just looking at all this great food.  But I'm also really, really hungry.  I may have to get those cheesecakes for real!

What is your favorite ALDI holiday specialty item?  Leave a comment below!

World Vision Catalog Prosperity Cinnamon Box Giveaway

Thanks to World Vision for providing a Cinnamon Box for review as well as for this giveaway!

Do you still have some finicky family or friends to shop for this holiday season?

For your gift recipients who seem to have everything, fresh cinnamon, coffee or serving spoons from the World Vision Gift Catalog make a perfect, yet special gift. Proceeds from these and other items from the catalog directly help children and other families in urgent need.

The World Vision Gift Catalog offers more than 250 items that help fight poverty and save lives here around the world. With a financial contribution, donors can select one of the 30+ handcrafted gifts that can be shared with a loved one and at the same time help a person in need.

Here are a few of my favorite gifts:
  • “Prosperity” Cinnamon Box - Vietnam's renowned sweet cinnamon is a renewable resource collected from the Cassia tree by skilled artisans. It is presented in a beautifully carved cinnamon bark box that bears a common Asian character for prosperity.
  • Hand-Carved Serving Spoons - this beautiful set of two hand-carved olivewood serving spoons is delivered in a hand-sewn gift bag of African fabric and can be used as a decoration or for serving.
  • Fair-Trade Coffee Set includes whole bean coffee from Ethiopia, Sumatra, and Costa Rica blended by OneCup.org and is delivered in a bag hand-sewn by local women with a hand-carved olivewood scoop.
I had the chance to receive a "Prosperity" Cinnamon Box from World Vision.  When I opened the box, the scent of delicious cinnamon overwhelmed me, even before I had unwrapped the well-shipped package.  The attractive circular box with lid came with a gift tag that said, "Cinnamon Box - A Gift from Vietnam."

The box is made from cinnamon tree bark, so it smells just as good as its contents - 3 ounces of sweet cinnamon.  The cinnamon is so much more fragrant than the typical cinnamon you'd purchase at the grocery store.  I can't wait to use the cinnamon in delicious holiday cookies and treats!  And even after the cinnamon is gone, the box will still be useful - you could use it as you would potpourri, to keep your clothing drawers smelling nice.  Or use it to store small items.  This is definitely a gift that keeps on giving!

Want to learn more?  Check out the World Vision Catalog to see other gifts.  If you give a donation, you can give a family the gift of a goat, a duck, or a new well.  You can give families useful items such as a sewing machine or a bicycle.  I think my favorite gift is giving a girl the opportunity to go to school.  And if any of these items are too expensive for your budget, you can buy a share of many of them for $25.

And there are lots of other great gifts for your loved ones as well, such as beaded necklaces, totes, and scarves.  Each of these gifts helps artisans in other countries!

Want to learn more?  Check out the World Vision Catalog.  Or become a fan on Facebook or follow on Twitter.

Would you like to receive your own Prosperity Cinnamon Box, either for yourself or for a gift?

Be #CartonSmart this holiday season

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Carton Smart. All opinions are 100% mine.

It's time for all the great deals on Thanksgiving food at the grocery store.  As you purchase your ingredients for your delicious Thanksgiving meal, have you thought about the packaging that your food comes in, and how the packaging affects the environment?

Sure, food can come in boxes and cans that can be recycled.  But what about the damage done in making these packages in the first place?

Become Carton Smart and consider using products packed in Tetra Pak® cartons this holiday season!  Here's why TetraPak packaging is so much better than conventional packaging:
  • Tetra Pak® cartons are made of 70% paper, a renewable resource, from selectively harvested, re-grown trees that are FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council)
  • Cartons use 1/3 of the packaging compared to cans.
  • Cartons are space saving, easy to store and open. Keep your pantry neat and toss your can openers, stackable and space saving.
  • The unique packaging process preserves the flavor and nutrients of food without the use of preservatives. Product quality is exactly the way it was intended to be.
  • Recycleable and in fact result in 60% less landfill waste than cans
  • Cartons are re-closable so you can use what you need and save the rest for later.
Check out this infographic to learn even more!

I recently had the chance to try out three different Pacific Foods products packaged in TetraPak packaging:

Pacific Foods Chicken Stock

Pacific Foods Pumpkin Puree

Pacific Foods Cranberry Sauce

I love that these products take up so little room in my crowded pantry and refrigerator.  And I love that they can be stored directly in their packaging once open, unlike boxes and cans.  That means a lot less of looking at plastic containers, trying to figure out what's in there!  And it means a lot less wasting of products as well.  And I love that the containers can easily be recycled!

I think that the pumpkin puree would work great in my recipe for Pumpkin Whole Wheat Rolls - I can't wait to give it a try this Thanksgiving!

PUMPKIN WHOLE WHEAT BREAD MACHINE ROLLS

3/4 cup warm water
4 tbsp butter, melted
1/2 cup Pacific Foods pumpkin puree in TetraPak packaging
1/3 cup honey
1 tsp salt
1-1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1-1/2 cup all-purpose flour
4 tsp vital wheat gluten
1 tbsp yeast
Add the ingredients to the bread machine in the order shown or in the order described by your bread machine's manual.  Set on the dough cycle.

When the dough cycle finishes, remove the dough to a floured surface.  Knead the dough for 1 minute.  Separate the dough into 16 pieces and roll each piece into a ball.  Place the dough balls in a 4x4 pattern in a greased 8x8 pan.  Cover the pan with a dishtowel and allow the dough to rise for 1 hour in a warm area.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Bake for 15 minutes, then cover the rolls with aluminum foil to prevent overbrowning and bake for another 5-10 minutes.  Allow to cool, then remove rolls and break them apart.

Makes 16 rolls.

But these aren't the only  products available in TetraPak packaging!  There are lots of soups, meals and sides, purees and sauces, non-dairy beverages as well!  Take a look around your grocery store - there are bound to be lots of carton-packed food items there.

How do you plan to be #CartonSmart this holiday season?  Do you plan to use ingredients that come in cartons, or do you plan to entertain with great-tasting food that leaves little waste? Leave a comment below!
