Publix BOGO vs. Walmart BOGO: Which is cheaper?

Last year, Walmart was running commercials stating that they were cheaper than my local grocery store, Publix.  So I did a little investigating, and I posted my finding in this Publix vs. Walmart: Which Is Cheaper? post.  I found that if you buy BOGO items and use Publix and competitor store coupons, you could easily beat Walmart prices.

Well, Walmart has changed the rules again!  In the state of Florida, Walmart will now match Publix BOGO sales.  (However, there seems to be a lot of confusion over the new rules.)

Since Walmart almost always has lower base prices than Publix, this would seem to mean that Walmart is now cheaper than Publix.  For instance, this week Publix has a BOGO sale on Rice Krispies.  The base price at my store is $3.99.  But Walmart offers the same box of Rice Krispies for $2.97.  If Walmart accepts the BOGO, then the two boxes of Rice Krispies would be cheaper at Walmart.

It's unclear whether Walmart will accept two coupons per BOGO deal, as Publix will.  If they do, that would mean that Walmart would still be cheaper.  If they only accept one coupon per BOGO, it's a little unclear which would be cheaper, but most likely Walmart would still be ahead.

Keep in mind that Walmart will also price match non-BOGO deals, as long as a specific price is listed in a sales flyer.

However, Publix still accepts Publix and other competitor store coupons; Walmart will not accept them.

Also, Publix regularly has unadvertised sales - sales that are shown in the store (and are listed on blogs like I Heart Publix and Southern Savers) but aren't printed in a flyer.  Walmart won't match these sales - the sales they match have to appear in a sales flyer.

So, which store is cheaper, Publix or Walmart?

I shopped at Publix this week and bought several BOGO and other deals, both advertised and unadvertised, and used coupons - manufacturer's, Publix store coupons, and competitor store coupons.

On that trip, I purchased Capri Sun juice, Rice Krispies, milk, Del Monte tomatoes, President feta, Friendship sour cream, Bertolli extra-virgin olive oil, Libby's Skinny Fruit, Ronzoni Garden Delight pasta, Purex laundry detergent, California Sun-Dry sundried tomatoes, tangerines, and chocolate coins.  On that trip, I spent $23.48 before taxes.  See all the details here.

Today, I "shopped" the same list of items at Walmart.  However, there were a few minor differences:
  • President feta was not available, so I substituted Athenos feta.
  • Friendship sour cream was not available, so I substituted Daisy sour cream.
  • Sun-Dry sundried tomatoes were not available, so I substituted Bella Sun Luci sundried tomatoes.
  • I forgot to check for the chocolate coins, so I'm assuming the price is the same as the price at Publix. (ETA: I would price-match these to the 3/$1.00 sale stated in this week's Publix flyer anyway.)
The feta, Skinny Fruit, and sundried tomatoes were unadvertised sales, so I can't purchase those BOGO at Walmart.  However, the BOGO sale would be good for the juice, Rice Krispies, tomatoes, olive oil and pasta.  I also was able to price-match the detergent.  The milk and tangerines regular prices were cheaper at Walmart.

I still used the same manufacturer's coupons that I used at Publix. I assumed I could use 2 coupons per BOGO, which may or not be correct. For the feta and sour cream, I assumed that I had a similar manufacturer's coupon for the replacement product for the same amount. I also had a Publix coupon for milk and 2 $5/$30 Winn-Dixie coupons, which I cannot use at Walmart.

So here's how that shopping trip would have gone at Walmart:

2 Capri Sun 100% juice packs @ BOGO $3.38
- 2 $1.00 off any ONE CAPRI SUN 100% Juice or SUPER v
= $1.38 for two

6 Rice Krispies @ BOGO $2.97
= $8.91 for six

2 gallons milk @ $3.98 = $7.96
- 2 $2 off Milk wyb (3) Kellogg's Cereals printable
= $3.96

4 Del Monte tomatoes @ BOGO 98¢ = $1.96
- $0.50/4 Del Monte Canned Vegetables, exp. 2/1/14 (SS 11/03/13)
= $1.46 for four

2 Athenos feta @ $2.98 = $5.96 (unadvertised sale at Publix)
- 2 $1/1 Athenos coupon
= $3.96 for two

2 Daisy sour cream @ $1.78 =$3.56
- 2 $0.70/1 Daisy coupon
= $2.16 for two

2 Bertolli extra virgin olive oil @ BOGO $6.54
- 2 $1/1 Bertolli or Carapelli Olive Oil (Target mfr.)
= $4.54 for two

2 Libby's Skinny Fruit @ $1.48 = $2.96 (unadvertised sale at Publix)
- $1/2 Libby's Fruit
= $1.96 for two

4 Ronzoni Garden Delight pasta @ BOGO $1.28 = $2.56
- 2 $1/2 Ronzoni Garden Delight or Ronzoni Smart Taste printable
= 56¢ for four

1 Purex laundry detergent @ $4.99 (price-matched to Publix sales flyer)
- FREE Purex product coupon (up to $6.00)
= FREE

2 Bella Sun Luci sundried tomatoes @ $2.48 (unadvertised sale at Publix)
= $4.96

1 bag tangerines @ $3.38

3 bags chocolate coins @ 3/$1.00 = $1.00 (ETA: price-matched to Publix sales flyer)

Total "spent":  $38.23

So I spent $23.48 at Publix, and would have spent $38.23 at Walmart.  Publix is still cheaper!  (Click here for an appropriate sound effect.)

Here's a summary of the prices at Publix and Walmart:

Item Publix price Walmart price
2 Capri-Sun 100% juice $1.99 $1.38
6 Rice Krispies $11.97 $8.91
2 gallons milk -$4.00 $3.96
4 Del Monte tomatoes $2.68 $1.46
2 Feta cheese $3.39 $3.96
2 Sour cream $2.60 $2.16
2 Bertolli EVOO $5.59 $4.54
2 Libby's Skinny Fruit $1.00 $1.96
4 Ronzoni Garden Delight $0.98 $0.56
1 Purex $0.00 $0.00
2 Sun-dried tomatoes $2.79 $4.96
1 bag tangerines $3.49 $3.38
3 chocolate coins $1.00 $1.00
2 $5/$30 Winn-Dixie coupons -$10.00 $0.00

Total $23.48 $38.23

So on this trip, Publix was cheaper for me!  But will Publix be cheaper for you?
  • If you just buy whatever groceries you need without regard to the price, Walmart will be cheaper for you.  (Sorry, Publix.)
  • If you only use manufacturer's coupons, and not store coupons, you'll probably still save more at Walmart, assuming you can use 2 coupons for a BOGO item.  (Check with your store to be sure.)
  • $10 of the $14.75 I saved at Publix was due to the $5/$30 Winn-Dixie coupons from the Enjoy the City coupon books.  If your Publix store doesn't accept these coupons, your savings will be much smaller.
My conclusion: if you pull out all the stops when shopping - manufacturer's, Publix, and competitor coupons, advertised and unadvertised sales - you can definitely save more at Publix!

Various and sundry shopping

I ran to three different stores earlier this week to pick up a few things here, a few things there.

I needed bread and cereal - we were out of sale-priced cereal from Publix - so I went to ALDI to get it.  But ALDI isn't carrying certain baking supplies at this time of year, so I went to Walmart to get those items.  And I went to the kosher meat market to buy some ground beef and chicken legs.  Next week, I'll have a great recipe using those chicken legs on Frugal Food Thursday!

Here's the rundown on this shopping:

ALDI:
1 6-ct cinnamon bagels @ $1.69
1 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢
1 cream cheese @ $1.29
1 Crispy Oats cereal @ $1.69
2 instant oatmeal @ $1.49 = $2.98
1 whole wheat bread @ $1.29

Total spent: $9.93

Walmart:
1 molasses @ $2.78
1 Nestle cocoa @ $2.44
1 baking powder @ $1.24

Total spent: $6.46

Kosher Supermarket:
1 family pack chicken drumsticks @ $12.14
1 family pack ground beef @ $18.51

Total spent: $30.65

Store brands faceoff: Walmart vs. Publix

Last week, I did something, couponing-wise, that I had never done before: I used a Target Market Pantry cheese coupon when I purchased Publix brand cheese.

I didn't realize you could do this, but according to the Publix Coupon Policy, you can use a competitor store's house brand coupon for a Publix brand item of the same type and size.  Target is a competitor to my local Publix store; check with your local store before using Target coupons there.

In my area, Walmart has lower-priced house brands than Publix.  Knowing that, I started wondering: if I used Target coupons on Publix house brands, would they be cheaper than Walmart's?

Actually, the cheapest house brands in my area are at ALDI.  But I know not everyone is lucky enough to have ALDI in their area.  So I decided to do the comparison with Walmart, since most people have a Walmart within driving distance.

To test this out, last week I went through the Target printable coupons and wrote down the values of Market Pantry and Archer Farms coupons that were listed at the time.  Those coupons may not be there now.

Then I went shopping at Walmart and Publix, looking for store brand items that met the size requirements of the coupon and were similar at both stores. If I couldn't find the same size house brand at both stores, or I couldn't find a house brand product at one store, I took the coupon off the list. My comparisons are per item, but of course if you were really using the coupons, you would need to buy two or three of some of the items.

Here are the coupons for which I found virtually identical products at both Walmart and Publix.
  • 25¢ off condensed soup, 10.5 oz + (actually 75¢/3)
  • 50¢ off cheese, 5 oz + ($1/2)
  • $1.00 off tomato sauce, 24 oz + and pasta, 16 oz +
  • 50¢ off chewy granola bars ($1/2)
  • 50¢ off apple juice ($1/2)
  • $1.00 off frozen seafood item, 12-24 oz
  • $1.00 off frozen fruit
Here is a spreadsheet of my results.

I found that for two items (the tomato sauce/pasta and frozen fruit), the strategy of using Target coupons at Publix would be slightly cheaper than buying the item at Walmart.

One item - the condensed soup - was a tie.

And for four items - the cheese, granola bars, apple juice, and seafood - it would be cheaper to buy it at Walmart.   The apple juice was still over $1.00 cheaper at Walmart, for instance.

So I can't recommend buying full-priced house brands at Publix and using Target coupons as a method to save the most money.   I still think the best way to get the lowest grocery bill is to buy on-sale name brand items at Publix (or the high-priced supermarket in your area) with manufacturer's and store coupons, and then to go to Walmart or ALDI to buy house brand items that you need that week.

And if the Publix store brand item goes on sale, using a Target store coupon might make it cheaper than the product at Walmart.  However, other than dairy items, I rarely see Publix store brand items on sale.

What do you think?  Have you tried this comparison before?  Which store is cheaper for you?  Leave a comment below!

Walmart: Cool beans!

I headed over to Walmart earlier this week to get some beans. Sure, ALDI has cheaper beans, but they just don't have the varieties I need to make my Garlic-Parmesan White Bean Mash or my Spicy Roasted Chickpeas.

While I was there, I also picked up some bananas and whole wheat flour. (Publix has the same variety of flour for $2.99 this week... should've waited!)

Here's what I got:

4 cans GV Great Northern beans @ 68¢ = $2.72
2 cans GV Chickpeas @ 68¢ = $1.36
1 5-lb bag King Arthur whole wheat flour @ $3.47
3.00 lb bananas @ 38¢/lb = $1.14 (on sale - regularly 59¢/lb)

Total spent: $8.69
Saved: 63¢

Grocery shopping: Running from store to store

Our grocery stockpiles were pretty full this week, so earlier this week I ended up just running to a few different stores to pick up a few items at each. I wish I could just go to one store, but I feel terrible buying something at full price at one store, knowing that it's cheaper just a mile away!

Here's what I got:

Western Beef:
0.90 lb plum tomatoes @ $1.19/lb = $1.07
1 bunch scallions @ 65¢
1.65 lb green pepper @ 79¢/lb = $1.30
1 3-lb bag Gala apples @ $2.99
3 cucumbers @ 50¢ = $1.50

Total spent: $7.51

Kosher Supermarket:
4.72 lb chicken breasts @ $4.99/lb = $23.55
3.62 lb ground beef @ $4.99/lb = $18.06

Total spent: $41.61

ALDI:
2 gallons milk @ $2.99 = $5.98
1 juice pouches @ $1.79
1 box instant oatmeal @ $1.39
1 frozen juice concentrate @ 92¢
1 cottage cheese @ $2.19

Tax: 11¢
Total spent: $12.38

Walmart:
2.82 lb bananas @ 38¢/lb = $1.07
4 GV Great Northern beans @ 68¢ = $2.72

Total spent: $3.79

Total spent on four trips: $64.22

              Last-minute trip!

Supposedly one of the great things about couponing and stockpiling is that you never have to make a separate trip - you have everything you need at home.

Well, I guess then my stockpile needs some work, because I found myself making special trips over the weekend to pick up items for a birthday party and for the Passover holiday.

I went to Walmart and ALDI. ALDI wasn't all that crowded - again, I worry about the store's future in my area. Walmart, on the other hand, was packed; I had trouble rolling my cart within the aisles and almost ran into people several times. (Can you tell I'm used to shopping on weekday mornings, when I have the stores practically to myself?

I didn't use coupons for any of these items. ALDI doesn't take them, and I checked but couldn't find coupons for the items I got at Walmart.

              So here's what I got:

              ALDI:
              2 dozen large eggs @ $1.29
              2 apple juice @ $1.29
              2 butter quarters @ $2.29
              1 strawberries @ $1.59
              1 gallon milk @ $1.99

              Total spent: $13.32

              Walmart:
              1 box candles @ $1.32
              1 snack plates @ $1.97
              1 grape juice @ $2.48
              1 8-oz sour cream @ 88¢
1 package cocoa @ $2.42 (ALDI was out of cocoa!)

              Tax: 20¢
              Total spent: $9.27

Passover Price List: Publix, Walmart, and Winn-Dixie

With Passover coming soon, it's time to start purchasing needed items for the holiday. But how do you do that *and* save money?

First, check out my tips on saving money on Passover food.

Second, base your meals this week on fresh local produce, dairy, and other items that don't require special Passover versions.  Salads and simply prepared meats are easy to make and don't require a lot of Passover-only ingredients.  Fruit makes a great dessert.

And third, check your prices before buying!  The stores have very different prices.  Today I went to Publix, Winn-Dixie, and Walmart to check their prices on Passover food.  Here's what I found in my area, South Florida:

                    item Publix Walmart Winn-Dixie
                    1 lb matzo N/A N/A $2.19
                    5 lb matzo $7.99 $12.99 $8.99
                    borscht $2.59 N/A $2.19
                    cake meal $4.59 N/A N/A
                    Coca-Cola N/A N/A $1.50
                    egg matzo $3.29 N/A $2.50
                    gefilte fish $5.99 $6.50 $6.99
                    horseradish $1.25 N/A $0.85
                    Kedem grape juice $2.50 $2.48 $2.89
                    macaroons $3.50 N/A $4.00
                    Manischewitz wine $4.49 N/A $3.99
                    matzo ball mix $1.79 $2.32 $1.30
                    matzo meal 16 oz $3.19 N/A $3.69
                    potato starch N/A N/A $4.00
                    whole wheat matzo $3.99 N/A $2.50

Of course, prices and availability may vary depending on location.  You can also try kosher food stores or warehouse stores for your Passover needs.

Use these tips to have a wonderful, but less expensive, Passover!

Walmart: Sometimes I do pay full price

Sometimes I just gotta pay full price - when I haven't been able to stockpile a needed item and we need it right now.  Occasionally even a needed item can be put off until the next sale comes around, but not this time.

Generally, I buy items like that at ALDI, but ALDI doesn't carry quite everything.  So my next choice for items like that is Walmart.

Up until two years ago, I used to go to Walmart every couple of weeks and fill up an entire cart, and then some, with their house brands.  It was the cheapest option for buying groceries, or so I thought... until I learned how combining sales with coupons could get me the same types of items for much, much less!  So since I've been couponing, I haven't bought all that much at Walmart.  And now with ALDI in town, I've only been a couple of times all year.  This makes me happy, since I simply don't enjoy the shopping experience at Walmart.

But, sometimes you need to go to get some items, so here's what I got:

Great Value dish detergent @ $2.27
                          Prell shampoo @ $2.47
                          Equate fluoride rinse @ $2.88
                          Equate baby powder @ $1.73

                          Tax: 57¢
                          Total spent: $9.92
