Raspberry Banana Bread (Frugal Food Thursday)

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

These recipes are also listed at these wonderful linkup parties - thank you to all the hosts for allowing me to link up!

During the summer, I love to cook with my kids! They especially like to bake - cookies and cakes and such.

Here's an easy recipe for banana bread - it's great for using up all those bananas that are turning brown. It also uses frozen raspberries, which occasionally go on sale at Publix. Watch for a sale, then stock up!

Here's the recipe:

Saving on tissues for school

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of White Cloud. All opinions are 100% mine.

It's almost back to school time!  Get your school supplies list and start shopping!

If your child's list is like my daughter's list, tissues are on the list.  And why wouldn't they be?  With 25 kids in a class come 25 runny noses, 25 sneezing mouths, and 50 messy hands.  So it makes sense that teachers want parents to provide a box of tissues - or, more likely, several boxes!

I usually watch for a buy one, get one free sale at Publix on a brand that also has a printable or newspaper coupon available.  When I see that combination, I stock up on lots of tissue boxes and give a bunch to the school.

If you haven't found a great sale/coupon combination yet, you'll want to purchase tissue boxes in bulk - several boxes sold as a single unit.  That will save you a lot over buying individual boxes.  To save more, you'll want to purchase them at a national chain store which has the lowest possible regular price - for me, that's either ALDI or Walmart.

 photo 1162ef5e-4d2d-416a-a97c-75470d9d7477_zpsb860d0db.jpg

One brand you might want to check out is White Cloud Facial Tissue.  White Cloud tissues are soft and smoothing to sore noses.  And, they come in handy three-packs and six-packs, perfect for sending into school!  Your child's teacher will be thrilled to get a large pack of tissues - and it's always good to get on your child's teacher's good side, right?

Even better - you can use this 75¢ off any White Cloud multipack coupon to save even more!   Print the coupon and take it to your local Walmart - where White Cloud is sold exclusively - and you'll save on those White Cloud multi-packs!  Check the White Cloud Store Locator to find the nearest Walmart where White Cloud products sold.

And here's yet another reason to purchase White Cloud multi-packs: You can even help make a difference in the life of a child when you purchase limited edition White Cloud Facial Tissue multipacks, designed by kids at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. White Cloud will make a donation to three CMN hospitals in the areas that sell the most boxes.

So when you purchase items off your child's supply list, think about White Cloud tissue multipacks!

Diet-To-Go Freshly Made Diet Meals Review

Many thanks to Diet-To-Go for providing the products for this review!

Wouldn't you love to have yummy and healthy meals made just for you and delivered right to your door?

No more cooking every night after a long day.  No more leftovers going bad in the fridge.  No temptation to get takeout or have pizza delivered when you're too tired to cook.

Sounds great, right?

Recently I had the opportunity to give such a product a try!

Diet-to-Go is a meal delivery company focused on making healthy eating both easy and affordable. Their goal is to change perceptions of what it means to eat healthy and help our customers achieve and maintain a healthy weight for life. They want to help people establish a common sense approach to healthy eating, an approach that can be sustained so that making smart food choices becomes a way of life.

Working with some of the best chefs in the business and cooking in our USDA-certified kitchen, they provide their customers fresh, delicious, low-calorie, nutritionally balanced meals to help them lose weight or simply support an already healthy weight and lifestyle.

The folks at Diet-to-Go sent me a package with five days of meals.  Most of the meals were packaged in a styrofoam cooler packed with dry ice; a few other items were delivered in a separate box.  I received emails saying that the products were on their way - you'll definitely want them delivered when you expect to be home, so that you can refrigerate or freeze the food right away.

Once I opened the box, I was excited about all the different types of foods there - 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 5 dinners, all different.  In the Diet-to-Go service, there are five weeks of different meals and three different meal plans - low-fat, low-carb, and vegetarian.  I know that since I cook very frugally, I often repeat meals every week or two.  Going five weeks without repeating a meal sounds great to me!  If you tried each of the meal plans for five weeks, that would mean you could go almost 4 months without repeating a meal!

And if you find you don't like a particular meal, you can substitute it for another one you do like when that week comes up again.  What great personal service!  And meals come with other products - breakfasts have juice or yogurt included, and lunches have fruit.  Some dinner meals even include dessert!

I found that the breakfast and lunches were the tastiest meals.  One meal I really liked was the Egg and Broccoli Pie.  The egg was well-cooked, not mushy, and eating pastry crust on a low-fat diet definitely seemed indulgent!

Another one that I liked was the French Toast.  French toast, on a diet? Again, it seemed really indulgent, but it was really diet food!  But what really made this meal was the mango syrup that came with it.  It tasted like it came straight from the tree!

One lunch I really loved were the Tuscan Boats.  What do you get when you mix potatoes and pizza?  These Tuscan Boats were potato skins stuffed with tomato sauce and cheese.  It made me feel like I was eating appetizers at a themed restaurant - super yummy!

The dinners, though, were a little disappointing.  A few were okay, and one I just had to throw out because I didn't like it at all.  That was a meal that I definitely would have replaced in a future week!

So the meals were for the most part delicious, but did it help me lose weight?

Yes, it did!  I lost 1.5 pounds over the five days of the diet!  Woohoo!

Now, the elephant in the room... the cost.  While on this diet, I still had to cook for my husband and children.  Since I was still needing to shop and make meals, buying my own meals separate would be a burden on the budget.  So I don't think this is a great idea long-term for people with children at home.  But if you need to jump-start a diet, you might think about getting Diet-to-Go for a few weeks so that you start losing weight and learning about portion control.

For single persons or couples, I can see where Diet-to-Go could save you money.  By avoiding eating out at restaurants or getting takeout, you'd save a lot!  And you wouldn't need to do nearly as much grocery shopping - just enough to cover the two days a week where meals are not provided - so you'd save time and money there as well.

So if you're looking to lose weight but still eat delicious food, I heartily recommend Diet-to-Go.  Give it a try!

(I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for more information.)

What is key person insurance?

Some of the information in this post was provided by Key Man Insurance.

If you run a business, you know how much you depend on your employees.  If you unexpectedly lost one of your important employees, it could be devastating to your business.  Not only would you have to find, hire, and train a new person for the position, you might also lose a great deal of business in that time.  In the worst case, losing a valued employee unexpectedly could mean the end of your business!

So what should you do to protect yourself and your business from such a calamity?

Consider getting key person insurance.

Key person insurance is defined by Wikipedia as:
Key person insurance... is an important form of business insurance. There is no legal definition for "key person insurance". In general, it can be described as an insurance policy taken out by a business to compensate that business for financial losses that would arise from the death or extended incapacity of an important member of the business. To put it simply, Keyman Insurance is a standard life insurance, TPD insurance or trauma insurance policy that is used for business succession or business protection purposes.

Key person insurance can be taken out on any important person in your business, without whom your business would have difficulty running. This could be your main salesperson who creates most of the sales for your company.  It could be a project manager, without whom your business would not be able to complete its task.  It could be an executive or partner in the organization.

Key person insurance is often used in large businesses, but perhaps is even more important for small businesses, since it may be that only one person or a few people know how the business actually works.  If they are no longer working there, the business may cease to function.

The payout for this type of insurance can be used to hire a temporary employee, to find and train a new permanent employee, or to compensate the business for lost income while the position is not filled or the new employee has not yet been trained.  This lifeline can mean the difference between a business being able to continue or it going under.

So if you run a small business and have employees with key responsibilities, and if you think your business would suffer greatly without them, you might want to consider getting key person insurance.  Be sure to get several quotes from companies such as keymaninsurancepolicy.net.  Be sure to check what each policy will cover and which employees can be covered so that you can compare them evenly.

Publix: Saved 96%! (well, not really)

Be sure to enter for a chance to win a $25 Publix gift card!

On this shopping trip, I paid $1.26 in cash and saved $31.85!

Sound too good to be true?

Well, it sort of is too good to be true...

Besides the items I bought pictured above, I bought Goodnites underwear for my special-needs child who is not yet fully night-trained.  That added $19.99 to the pre-coupon total, so I was able to use a $5 off $30 Winn-Dixie competitor coupon from the Enjoy the City coupon book.

And, I used two coupons for the Goodnites: a $3.00 Publix coupon from the weekly ad as well as a $2.00 off any one GOODNITES Underwear printable coupon.  When I paid for the Goodnites with my Health Care Savings Account card (it's a qualified purchase, like medications and co-pays for doctors' appointments), I paid $19.19 - $17.99 for the product and $1.20 in tax.  So the $3 Publix coupon ended up going toward my food purchases, not toward the Goodnites.

So that's how I was able to get the total so low!  Without the Goodnites, I couldn't have used the $5 off Winn-Dixie coupon nor the $3 Goodnites Publix coupon.  So my total would have been $9.26 with a savings of $23.85, for a savings percentage of 72%.  Still pretty good!

Here's what I got:

2 Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers @ BOGO $2.59
- $1/2 Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers or Seasoned Steamers, exp. 8/15/13 (Publix Best Meals Happen At Home)
= $1.59 for two, or 80¢ each

2 Sea Cuisine tilapia @ BOGO $6.69
- 2 $1/1 High Liner Sea Cuisine Product printable
= $4.69 for two, or $2.35 each

2 Simply Dressed salad dressing @ BOGO $3.69
- 2 $1/1 Marzetti Simply Dressed Refrigerated Salad Dressings printable
= $1.69 for two, or 85¢ each

2 Publix mandarin oranges @ BOGO $1.29
= 65¢ each

1 Pillsbury classic pizza crust @ $2.59
- FREE Pillsbury pizza crust coupon (received from MyBlogSpark)
= FREE
(Check out my grilled pizza post where I used this product - and enter for a chance to win a Grilled Pizza Prize Pack!)

1 Goodnites pants (not pictured) @ $19.99
- $3/1 Goodnites Publix in-ad coupon
- $2.00 off any one GOODNITES Underwear
= $14.99

- $5 off $30 Winn-Dixie coupon (Enjoy the City)

Total product: $19.25
Tax: $1.20

Grand total: $20.45
Pay $19.19 with Health Care Savings Account card

Total cash paid: $1.26
Total saved compared to Publix full prices: $31.85

ALDI: Saving by not shopping

I've been trying to limit my ALDI shopping to one time per week.  That means that I buy more at each trip, but it keeps me from buying impulse items on a second trip.  Plus, there's the time and gas spent getting there and back.  It's not that much, but it adds up week after week!

Here's what I got this week:

1 dozen eggs @ $1.49
2 gallons milk @ $3.39 = $6.78
1 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢
1 16-oz shredded mozzarella @ $3.29
1 cream cheese @ $1.29
1 3-lb Fuji apples @ $3.49
1 celery @ $1.29
1 instant oatmeal @ $1.49
1 Romaine hearts @ $2.19
1 2-lb sweet onions @ 89¢
2.26 lb bananas @ 44¢/lb = 99¢
1 3-ct tomatoes @ $1.19
2 2-ct green peppers @ 99¢ = $1.98
1 baby carrots @ 99¢
1 6-ct plain bagels @ $1.69

Total spent: $30.03

Pillsbury Grilled Pizza Prize Pack Giveaway

With summer here, you and your family want to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. So, for your next casual weeknight meal, why not grill pizza on the barbecue?

You can start with your own homemade pizza crust, like my recipe for Whole Wheat Pizza Dough. Or you can use a ready-made pizza crust like Pillsbury Classic Pizza Crust!

Recently my family and I enjoyed making pizza on the grill.  Here's how we did it:

First of all, I don't own a barbecue - yeah, I know, it's just never been on our must-purchase list; other things always seem to take precedence.  But I do have an indoor grill we received as a wedding present, so I used that.  But if you have a barbecue, please use it!

First, take your Pillsbury Classic Pizza Crust or your own dough, and roll it with a floured rolling pin on a floured surface.  Spray both your grill and a large piece of aluminum foil with canola oil spray.

Place your pizza dough on the aluminum foil, and place the aluminum foil on the grill.

Check the bottom of the crust as it cooks to make sure it doesn't burn.  Turn it over with a spatula once the bottom is nice and brown.  (I let mine go just a little bit too long.)

Cook the other side for just a minute or so.  It will cook more later.  Remove the crust and aluminum foil from the grill.  Add your sauce and toppings - I have a tomato sauce hater, so I used alfredo sauce and three kinds of cheese - mozzarella, cheddar, and parmesan.

Turn the grill down to low and put the crust and aluminum foil back on the grill.  Cover and cook until the sauce is hot and the cheese is melted.   (I covered mine with a stockpot lid.)

And voila, you have yummy grilled pizza made at home!

Here are a couple of other recipes to try:
And here’s an opportunity for you to win one of 5 grills from the Pillsbury Classic Pizza Pinspiration Sweepstakes!  Pin it to win it! Here's how to enter:
Would you like to try grilling pizza at home?  Check this link for more details:

The prize pack includes:

Nielsen-Massey Vanilla Extract Giveaway

Thanks to Nielsen-Massey for providing the vanilla extract for this giveaway!

Love to cook desserts from scratch?  Then you know how important it is to use good vanilla in your recipes!

I recently tried a bottle of Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract.  One whiff and I could tell that this was no ordinary vanilla extract!

Taking premium, hand-selected beans cultivated on the Bourbon Island of Madagascar, Nielsen-Massey uses their proprietary cold extraction process to gently draw out and preserve the vanilla's over 300 flavor compounds. The result is a sweet, creamy, mellow flavor with velvety after-tones, perfect for cooking and baking both sweet and savory dishes - an exceptional "all-purpose" vanilla.

Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract is kosher and gluten-free as well as all-natural and allergen-free.

I tried it in my recipe for Vanilla Sea Salt Fudge Ice Cream - check out the recipe!  It gave the homemade ice cream a really great vanilla flavor.  I also gave it a try in brownies - it took a basic recipe and gave it another dimension of flavor!

I definitely recommend that you give it a try.  Nielsen-Massey vanillas can be found at a variety of stores - click here to find the store near you!  You can also purchase the vanillas at a variety of online stores.  And you can become a fan on Facebook or follow on Twitter.

Or would you like to try Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract for free?

Frugal Follies is sponsoring a giveaway for a free 2 oz bottle!

One winner will receive a 2-oz bottle of Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract. The giveaway ends on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 11:59 PM Eastern time.  Open to US residents 18 and older.  Use the Rafflecopter form below to enter!

Vanilla Sea Salt Fudge Swirl Ice Cream (Frugal Food Thursday)

(My ice cream started melting before I took the picture!)

Thanks to Nielsen-Massey for providing the vanilla extract and information for this recipe!

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

These recipes are also listed at these wonderful linkup parties - thank you to all the hosts for allowing me to link up!

Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month?  With kids at home for the summer, this is a great time to try making homemade ice cream!

Don't have an ice cream maker?  Here are three low-cost ways to make ice cream at home, courtesy of Nielsen-Massey:
  • The Bag Method: Take a well-chilled ice cream base, put it in a plastic bag (Ziploc), which rests inside of a larger Ziploc bag filled with kosher salt and ice, then shake for a long while and end up with some pretty good ice cream.
  • Ice Cream in a Can, or Kick the Can: Put ice cream base in a small coffee can, which rests in a larger coffee can, surrounded by rock salt and ice. Seal the tops and roll the can around.
  • The Stir-Every-30-Minutes Method: Take custard base out of the freezer every half-hour and give it a vigorous stir until you have an ice-cream-like consistency. It’s the simplest of all techniques.
If you're making vanilla ice cream at home, you want the vanilla to really stand out!  So when the folks at Nielsen-Massey,  the makers of Nielsen-Massey Pure Vanilla Extract, the same extract used in gourmet restaurants across the country, suggested I try their product, I knew that ice cream would be the perfect product for it!

But plain vanilla ice cream, no matter how good the vanilla is, just doesn't do it for me, no matter how amazing the flavor is.  (And it is amazing, I assure you!)  So I realized this would be a good opportunity to try the Chocolate Sea Salt Fudge sauce I've seen displayed at ALDI.  Though I was intrigued by the product, I never had a good excuse to spend the money to get it.  Well, here's the excuse and the recipe!
