Fried Cinnamon Bites - Celebrate the Holidays with Pillsbury® Cinnamon Rolls!

Thanks to Pillsbury for providing a free coupon for the cinnamon rolls used in this recipe!

My family is celebrating Chanukah right now, and one of the ways we celebrating is by eating fried foods!  The oil that the food is fried in helps us remember the miracle of the oil in the Chanukah story.  When the Temple was restored, there was only enough oil to light the holy lamp for one night, but instead, the oil lasted for eight nights, enough time for more holy oil to be made.

The food usually associated with Chanukah is potato latkes, pancakes made with shredded potato.  But we decided to put a modern spin on Chanukah by making fried cinnamon rolls!

Making them was pretty simple.  First, I opened a can of Pillsbury® Cinnamon Rolls.  I rolled flat each cinnamon roll, then cut them in half.  I heated some canola oil in a pot on the stove, put in the cinnamon roll halves, and cooked them until they were golden brown on both sides.

After draining the rolls on a wire rack above paper towels, I placed them on a plate and added some powdered sugar.  My daughter used blue icing to decorate them and make them more festive!

And here's some good news: Serious Eats and Pillsbury have teamed up to bring you easy, delicious recipes that will brighten any table. For the next few weeks, check back for recipes, step by step videos and more!  For instance, here are some easy cinnamon roll recipes - check them out!

And there's a giveaway involved! Pin any recipe to your Pinterest board and enter to win a weekly drawing for a $500 gift card!  Click here for the contest rules.

Walgreens & CVS Black Friday Shopping

You might think, given that I love getting great deals, that Black Friday would be my favorite day of the year.

But you'd be wrong.  Yes, I love getting great deals, but I hate crowds, lines, and searching for parking spots.  So I'd rather skip the Black Friday sales.  More for the rest of you!

But I did make quick stops to get a few deals at CVS and Walgreens, along with my regular trip to Publix.  I was disappointed with the deals at the drug stores - seems like in years gone by that the deals were a lot better.  Or maybe I've just become pickier.

I haven't shopped much at CVS and Walgreens this year, so I didn't have any Register Rewards or Extra Care Bucks to use to make the deals even sweeter.  But I think I did okay.

Here's what I got:

Walgreens:

1 Crest 3D White toothpaste @ $3.00 (receive $3 RR)
- $0.50 Crest® Pro-Health, Crest® Plus Scope or Crest® 3D Whitening Toothpaste 4 oz or larger
= $2.50 (50¢ moneymaker after RRs)

1 Herbal Essence shampoo @ $2.99 (receive $3 RR)
= $2.99 (1¢ moneymaker after RRs)

1 Tums Freshers @ $4.50 (receive $4.50 RR)
- $1/1 Tums product, 24+ ct
= $3.50 ($1 moneymaker after RRs)

Tax: 36¢
Total product: $9.35

Pay with $5 in Balance Rewards Savings (earned through prescription purchases)

Total out of pocket: $4.35
Total saved compared to Walgreens full prices: $6.50
RRs received: $10.50

CVS:

2 Milky Way bars @ 75¢ = $1.50 (receive 75¢ ECB for 1 purchase)
- BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE MILKY WAY® Brand Bars (1.72 oz. - 1.91 oz.) (Max Value: $1.29)
= 75¢ (FREE after ECBs)

2 CVS vitamins @ BOGO $8.99
- $2.00/1 CVS vitamins (Coupon Printing Center)
= $6.99, or $3.50 each

Total spent:  $7.74
Total saved compared to CVS full prices: $9.74
ECBs received: 75¢

Book Trailer

Excerpt

Instead of saying more, he brushed his fingertips along my cheek, and his halo glimmered. I could hear the waves slapping the rocks behind us, the wind driving them in. That same wind whipped against my skin, but the touch of his hand on my face was all I could think about. It sent a current through both of us and filled me with longing for something I wasn’t sure I understood.

“I’m sorry.” He stepped back and shoved his hands into his pockets as the light around him faded. “You don’t know what it’s like. Being near you now, remembering those moments we had…” His hair blew into his eyes, but this time he didn’t move. I wanted to brush it back, but I didn’t know how he’d react. Would touching him be bad?

“You want to know who you were?” he asked. “You may look different, but you’re the same. I look into your eyes and see you.” He took in a deep breath, fixing his attention on the horizon. I’d seen and heard so much now that the logical part of my brain had long since given up arguing with me. I could feel what he was saying was true. All of it.

Carbonell Olive Oil Prize Pack Giveaway

A while back, I had the chance to make one of my favorite recipes, Chicken Basquaise, with the addition of Carbonell Spanish Olive Oil!

Much like Spanish wine, Spanish olive oil offers a distinctively different flavor that liberates meat, fish and vegetable dishes from the confines of traditional, expected taste. Carbonell olive oil, since 1866, is only produced and bottled in Spain. Its quality and tradition have made it one of the preferred brands all over the world.  Carbonell Extra Virgin olive oil has an intense flavor that is delicious in salads or as a base for dips, dressings and as a seasoning in many dishes.

Check out my recipe for Chicken Basquaise!

And here's another great recipe using Carbonell olive oil - Apple and Mango Marinated Chicken!

APPLE AND MANGO MARINATED CHICKEN

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Carbonell Extra Light Olive Oil
4 cleaned free-range, boneless chicken breasts (cut into 3-inch strips)
2 cups fresh apple cider
2 cups mango juice or your favorite equivalent (guava, pineapple or blend)
1 tbsp. black pepper
1 tbsp. kosher salt
additional kosher salt and black pepper for seasoning
after the marinating process

Directions:

1. Remove any fat and cartilage from the chicken breast and cut into small 3-inch strips.

2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together juices, salt, pepper and Carbonell Extra Light Olive Oil.

3. In a glass baking dish, container or resealable plastic bag, lay the strips of chicken in the marinade and let them sit overnight for maximum results.

4. Remove the chicken from marinade and season both sides of the chicken with a pinch of kosher salt and black pepper (50/50 blend).

5. Heat outdoor or indoor grill to high and place strips on it, quickly grilling each side. Do not overcook the chicken as these little strips will cook in about 3-5 minutes total cooking time (remember some of the acids from the juices have broken down the chicken already).

6. Remove cooked chicken from the grill and place in a new clean container.

7. Cover with plastic wrap or foil and let chicken rest (it will continue to cook slightly). Serve over a simple salad or roasted corn salad.

Bruschetta Boca Burger Pasta Sauce (Frugal Food Thursday)

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

It was a crazy day here at the Frugal Follies household - three daughters going in three different directions.  So I planned to make a quick dinner tonight - my 3 Can Veggie Chili.  But when I got to the pantry, I found no canned beans anywhere.  Guess I know what I'll be buying tomorrow at ALDI!

But, that left me without a plan for dinner.  So I looked in the freezer and found a box of Boca Burgers that I had bought when they were on a BOGO sale at Publix a couple of months ago.

Specifically, I had the Bruschetta variety - with tomato, basil, and Parmesan.  So I thought, why not cook the patties, then crumble them into a tomato sauce and serve it over pasta?

So that's exactly what I did - and the results were delicious!  I was concerned about the sauce having too many carbs, but a quick look at the nutrition label showed me that each has 8 grams of carbs, 5 of which are fiber.  So no worries there! (And no, this isn't a paid endorsement - I just really liked the product!)

I used a yellow bell pepper because I found it cheaply at ALDI last week, but of course, you can substitute a green pepper instead!

Here's the recipe:

Glide Bikes Giveaway

Welcome to the Glide Bikes giveaway!
Hosted by Miss Frugal Mommy and sponsored by Glide Bikes

About Glide Bikes

"Glide bikes are small balance bikes that are built low to the ground and without pedals, chains, or gears. This eliminates the risk of crashes and injuries caused by chains and gears while giving your children less to think about while learning a new skill.  Eliminating the need to pedal allows your child to focus on how to balance without worrying about the footwork required to power a traditional bicycle. Of course, there are no training wheels either; kids won't need them with our specially designed bikes which are perfect for young children or special needs children.  Glide Bikes are built low to the ground in order to easily allow children to place both feet on the road at any time.  This enables them to feel in control of their speed and balance; letting them focus on gliding instead of falling.  The child propels the bike by walking, and once they have built up some momentum, they lift their feet. This gives them the opportunity to practice steering and balancing without the distractions of using pedals and braking.  Glide Bikes are light and safe, weighing in at just 8-10 pounds and designed with our patented low speed downhill geometry of just 2 mph.  Riders as young as eighteen months can begin their bike riding adventures easily and safely with glide bikes."
