Publix: All the basics for $1.11

I had stopped by Publix on Wednesday.  I wasn't all that excited about the sales I had seen, so I just picked up 2 jars of Pace salsa, which were BOGO, and two packages of matzah meal, which were half price (Passover had just ended).  I use the matzah meal to make chicken soup with matzah balls on many a Friday night, so half price was a great deal.  I spent $6.38 total, and thought I was done with Publix for the week.

But... then I read about Ruth's shopping trip.  And I realized I had missed out on two great moneymakers and one free item!

2 Gas-X Prevention @ $4.39
-  2 $4 off Gas-X Prevention manufacturer coupon from the 12/12 Smartsource insert (expires 4/30)
- $5/2 Gas-X products Publix store coupon from the Green Advantage Buy flyer (expires 5/13)
= $4.22 overage for two, or $2.11 overage each

2 Gas-X 10 ct @ $2.39
- 2 $1 off Gas-X manufacturer coupon from the 1/9 Smartsource insert (expires 4/30) or 4/17 Smartsource insert (expires 7/16)
- $5/2 Gas-X products Publix store coupon from the Green Advantage Buy flyer (expires 5/13)
=  $2.22 overage for two, or $1.11 overage each

Voskos Greek yogurt @$1.00 each
- $1 off Voskos coupon from the 4/10 RedPlum insert
= FREE

I went through my file drawer of coupon inserts to see if I had these coupons.  (I get my coupons free from a free local newspaper which has newsstands in public places.  I generally get about 8-10 sets of inserts each week that way.) Normally, I would've already thrown out the 12/12 inserts, as I usually keep four months' worth on hand.  But I had been lazy and not done my coupon maintenance lately, so I still had the inserts.  I was able to find 6 of the $4 off coupons and 8 of the $1 off coupons from the 1/9 insert; I didn't check the 4/17 inserts, as I can do this deal again next week with those coupons.

I also had many of the 4/10 inserts with the yogurt coupon - I was able to get 10 coupons.

My plan was to buy the Gas-X and use the overage to buy things I needed: chicken, milk, eggs, bread, and spices, as well as the free yogurt.  I didn't want to clear the shelves, so I ended up going to three different Publix stores.  I'm presenting all of the items as one trip for simplicity.  The first trip was over $30 so I was able to also use a $5 off purchase of $30 or more coupon from the Publix Spring Cleaning Sale booklet which I got in my newspaper on Wednesday.

6 Gas-X Prevention @ $4.39
-  6 $4 off Gas-X Prevention manufacturer coupons from the 12/12 Smartsource insert (expires 4/30)
- 3 $5/2 Gas-X products Publix store couponss from the Green Advantage Buy flyer (expires 5/13)
= $12.66 overage

8 Gas-X 10 ct @ $2.39
- 8 $1 off Gas-X manufacturer coupons from the 1/9 Smartsource insert (expires 4/30) or 4/17 Smartsource insert (expires 7/16)
- 4 $5/2 Gas-X products Publix store coupons from the Green Advantage Buy flyer (expires 5/13)
=  $8.88 overage

10 Voskos Greek yogurt @$1.00 each
- 10 $1 off Voskos coupons from the 4/10 RedPlum insert
= FREE

2 loaves Nature's Own bread @ BOGO $2.75

1 gallon milk @ $3.75

2 dozen eggs @ $1.89 = $3.78

1 2-lb package Empire chicken cutlets @ $15.99 (yes, kosher is expensive)

1 package Badia peppercorns @ 69¢

1 package Badia bay leaves @ 69¢

Total before coupons: $83.11
- $42 in manufacturers' coupons
- $35 in store coupons
- $5 off purchase of $30 or more coupon from the Publix Spring Cleaning booklet
Total spent: $1.11

But the question remains: what do I do with all this Gas-X?  My cooking isn't that bad...

wow, that's amazing! Great job on the savings! You could donate the gas-x to a local shelter or food pantry... ? Just an idea.

LOL, I'm well-stocked on Gas X too.

The added bonus of doing the Publix coupon matchups for SWSL is now that I am much more aware of all the great deals. I don't know if the sales have been better lately, or if I am just catching more, but my shopping trips have definitely improved since I started the new site. Great job, I'm glad I could help you save on that super expensive chicken! (Yikes!)

Great job Laura! Each time I see your posts, it makes me miss publix even more. Way to go on the overages! I'm sure You will find some use for it. I just went through our "medicine cabinet" and took out all these random medicines we pick up because they are free or moneymakers. They are going in the donation box, surely someone will find use for them otherwise they would not be sold in stores. I'm guessing...
