ALDI vs. Walmart: Which is cheaper?

Click here for more articles about ALDI in South Florida.
I took a trip this morning to one of the new ALDI stores in South Florida.  I bought a few items there, but my main mission was to find out which is cheaper, ALDI or Walmart?

Before I went to the store, I looked through all of the shopping spreadsheets that I've posted as part of my Wednesday Weekly Shopping feature here at Frugal Follies.  I made a list of the items I most typically buy at Walmart.  Because I match coupons to weekly sales at grocery, drug, and national discount stores, I typically only shop at Walmart for items that rarely go on sale and/or rarely have coupons.

I wrote down the prices of these items, then checked for the same items at ALDI.  ALDI did not carry a few of the items on my list.  Others, such as honey, were in different size packages.  But here's what I found:

Item Walmart Price ALDI price
apple juice concentrate, can $0.97 $.92
apple juice , 64 oz $1.50 $1.19
juice boxes, 10 pack $1.98 $1.79
white flour, 5 lb $1.58 $1.19
whole wheat flour, 5 lb $2.98 not available
whole wheat bread, loaf $1.48 $1.19
tortillas, 20 ct $0.92 $0.97
sugar, 5 lb $2.54 $1.99
bananas, per pound $0.54 $0.39
cereal bars, 10 ct $2.00 $1.89
powdered dish detergent $2.27 not available
chocolate chips, 12 oz $2.48 $1.69
cocoa powder $2.18 $1.99
oil spray $1.74 $0.99

So for the items I typically buy at Walmart, buying them at ALDI instead will save me money!

But, you are asking, I buy different items than you do - will shopping at ALDI save me money, too?

Well, I also checked the prices of many standard grocery items.  I don't currently have the comparable Walmart prices, but they appeared to be much cheaper, in general.  Look for my next post about ALDI coming soon!

We love shopping at Aldi's. I don't understand how some ppl judge Aldi's just becuase they have never seen or heard of the brands they carry before. I love their canned veggies. When I buy green beans from walmart there is always stems in them, but I have never seen them in aldi's cans.

Actually, Aldi treats their workforce better than Walmart and pays 'em better as well, at least as far as I know, so shopping there could also be an ethics vs. price decision as well.
