ALDI: Super Bowl snacks

It's the Super Bowl on Sunday, which means that it's time for my annual Appetizers for Dinner meal!

I don't make a main course for dinner on the Super Bowl; I just make snacks.  Jalapeno Poppers, nachos, stuffed mushrooms, pizza bagels, veggies with dip, and so on. And, of course, desserts as well. The kids love this meal!

I went to ALDI twice this week, once to pick up a few extra things from the last sales week and today to get items to make the appetizers!

ALDI: More marshmallows!

There had been a deal at Publix several weeks ago where if you purchased three boxes of Kellogg's Rice Krispies, you could get a free gallon of milk.  I did two of those deals, getting a total of six boxes of cereal.  The free milk was finished quickly, but the Rice Krispies are still sitting in the pantry.  I guess that is everyone's last choice of cereal.

So last week, I bought marshmallows at ALDI to use to make Rice Krispies Treats.  I had also bought chocolate chips for cookies.  Well, the kids saw the two items and decided to combine them.  They put some marshmallows in a bowl, added the chocolate chips, and melted them in the microwave, Voila, s'mores filling, without the pesky graham crackers.

So, when I went back to ALDI this week, I had to buy another bag.  We'll see if these get made into Rice Krispies Treats...

Here's what I got this week at ALDI:

1 gallon milk @ $3.39
1 romaine hearts @ $1.99
1 celery @ $1.29
1 3-lb apples @ $2.99
1 16-oz shredded cheese @ $3.29
1 cottage cheese @ $2.29
2 whole wheat bread @ $1.29 = $2.58
1 honey @ $3.19
1 marshmallows @ 89¢
1 instant oatmeal @ $1.49
4 tuna @ 68¢ = $2.72
1 liquid hand soap @ 85¢

Tax: 6¢
Total spent: $27.02

ALDI: Great baking deals

The best time to buy the ingredients to bake from scratch is usually around Thanksgiving and Christmas.  But I got some good deals on baking supplies at ALDI this week!

I found holiday baking chips - red- and green-colored and vanilla-flavored - for only 49 cents.  I plan to open both bags, sort them by color, and use the red chips for Valentine's Day cookies and the green ones for St. Patrick's Day.

I thought the baking cocoa was gone from the ALDI shelves until next holiday season, but I found some in the discount aisle.  It wasn't on sale, but I stocked up anyway.  I use cocoa in my homemade brownies as well as in hot cocoa - this will definitely come in handy!  I also found corn starch - not sure why that isn't available all year round, but I could use some after my daughter used up all my corn starch for a craft project.

Here's what I got this week at ALDI:

1 gallon milk @ $3.39
1 24-oz cottage cheese @ $2.29
2 green peppers 2-pk @ 99¢ = $1.98
2 whole wheat bread @ $1.29 = $2.58
1 mini chocolate chip morsels @ $1.29
2 holiday morsels @ 49¢ = 98¢
1 bag marshmallows @ 89¢
2 tortillas 20 pk @ $1.99 = $3.98
1 instant oatmeal 10-pk @ $1.49
1 corn starch @ 89¢
4 baking cocoa @ $2.19 = $8.76

Total: $28.52

ALDI: Lots of produce & back to blogging!

Whatever happened to the ALDI posts here at Frugal Follies?

I used to blog about all the great price deals I got at ALDI. But somewhere around the end of August, I stopped posting what I had purchased there.

Why? I felt like the posts were getting a little boring. Each week I'd purchase milk, bread, produce, and maybe a couple of pantry items that normally I stockpile but had run out of unexpectedly. It got a little tough to say something interesting about each trip, so I decided to stop.

The problem is, I then forgot what I had purchased at ALDI, and I often misplaced my receipts, so when I went to do my weekly summary post, I had no idea what I had bought. So I ended up stopping the weekly summary posts (then called Wednesday Weekly Shopping) that included a blogger linkup. So then I missed out on seeing what other great deals other bloggers had found.

Not only that, but only showing my Publix deals gave a skewed view of what it takes to feed a family of 5 for under $80 per week.  I do buy food items that aren't on sale and don't have coupons, like milk and vegetables... just not at Publix.

So, for the new year, I've decided to start both the ALDI posts and the weekly linkup. Hope you enjoy them! If you do find them boring, please move on to the next post...

This week at ALDI, I took my youngest daughter shopping with me. She loves to push the cart find the items on my list. With ALDI's small size and fewer items, it's easy for her to do this! I had just put "fruits and vegetables" on my list, so she had fun picking healthy produce items out. That caused this week's ALDI bill to be a little larger than usual, but it's all good!

Here's what I got this week:

2 gallons milk @ $3.39 = $6.78
1 grape tomatoes @ 99¢
1 mini cucumbers @ $2.19
1 lemon juice @ $1.89
1 3-ct garlic @ 99¢
1 box nonfat dry milk @ $6.99
2 blueberry cartons @ $1.29 = $2.58
2 wheat bread @ $1.29 = $2.58
1 cottage cheese @ $2.29
1 2-ct green peppers @ $1.49
2.56 lb bananas @ 44¢/lb = $1.13
1 20-ct tortillas @ $1.99
1 Romaine hearts @ $1.99
1 baby carrots @ 59¢
1 3-lb apples @ $2.79
1 ketchup @ $1.49
1 salmon fillets @ $4.49

Total spent: $43.24

Cheap, delicious holiday meals from ALDI

Thanks to ALDI for providing a gift certificate to facilitate this review!  All opinions are my own.

I love shopping at ALDI!  I love the great prices, of course, but there's so much more to love about ALDI.  I love the small store size - no getting exhausted running all the way across the store to get an item you forgot to pick up.  It's so easy to shop there with kids because of the size as well.  Plus, they love to put the quarter in to take out the cart, and then to get the quarter back when putting the cart away.

ALDI usually only has one brand of an item, but to tell the truth, the lack of choice is a blessing in disguise - fewer choices to make means less stress.  And all of the house brand items I've tried have been just as delicious as a name brand.  Their dairy and produce items are of great quality and are a lot cheaper than those at the supermarket!

If I had to pick out one fault of ALDI, it would be that it just doesn't carry certain items.  But if you're shopping for everything you need for your holiday meal, that's not true right now!

The ALDI Happier Holidays catalog lists lots of great items you can get to make your perfect holiday meal! The catalog contains not only food, but also kitchen items and toys!

Check out the great prices on these stand mixers!  I may just have to go get myself one.

And for last-minute shoppers, ALDI also has great deals on toys, like this pretend food.

But, of course, the food reigns supreme!  I started wondering if I could make a great holiday meal just from items found at ALDI. If I were making a holiday meal solely from ALDI items, here's what I would make!

I'd start the meal with wine and cheese.  I do love the ALDI Moscato wine that's available all year round, but for a special meal, I'd start with this Petit Chocolat Wine imported from Germany.  Red wine with chocolate mixed in - how unusual and special.

I would pair the wine with these interesting special cheeses - Horseradish Cheddar and Mango Fire Cheddar.  And I would use the great ALDI crackers as well!

The main course for dinner would be a boneless turkey breast.  So easy to make and slice - no worrying about all the bones!

I'd serve that with stuffing - ALDI has lots of different kinds of mixes at this time of year.  Buy a few extra and put them away for future meals - these and many of the other holiday meal items are seasonal.  They'll be gone after the holidays, not to return again until next holiday season!

I'd serve the meal with a fresh tossed salad.  I love buying the on-sale produce items each week at ALDI.  I buy 2-3 weeks' worth of the sale items, which should take me through to the next sale for that item.

I'd add some sort of bread as well, like these rolls.  I buy my bread at ALDI - plenty fresh, and lots cheaper than the grocery store!

For dessert, I couldn't decide between these two items: The Belmont Supreme Cheesecake Sampler and the Belmont Petite Cheesecake Sampler.  Both look amazingly delicious!

What a delicious meal - I'm stuffed just looking at all this great food.  But I'm also really, really hungry.  I may have to get those cheesecakes for real!

ALDI: Saving by not shopping

I've been trying to limit my ALDI shopping to one time per week.  That means that I buy more at each trip, but it keeps me from buying impulse items on a second trip.  Plus, there's the time and gas spent getting there and back.  It's not that much, but it adds up week after week!

Here's what I got this week:

1 dozen eggs @ $1.49
2 gallons milk @ $3.39 = $6.78
1 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢
1 16-oz shredded mozzarella @ $3.29
1 cream cheese @ $1.29
1 3-lb Fuji apples @ $3.49
1 celery @ $1.29
1 instant oatmeal @ $1.49
1 Romaine hearts @ $2.19
1 2-lb sweet onions @ 89¢
2.26 lb bananas @ 44¢/lb = 99¢

ALDI: Why I don't take my husband shopping

This week, I made an unusual Sunday trip to ALDI with the whole family, as we were out of several basics like milk and bread.  While there, I asked my husband if he needed any snacks for his office.  He mentioned that he could use a can of nuts, so he went over and picked up a can for himself.

I didn't realize until I got home and looked at the receipt that he had picked up a container costing $11.99!  Holy cow, that must be one of the most expensive items in all of ALDI!

So I think I'll run to ALDI myself from now on...

I made a second trip later in the week.  I bought the usual perishables, but also whipping cream and fudge sauce, which will be used for a recipe I'll be featuring next week!

Here's what I got on my two trips:

Trip #1:
2 gallons milk @ $3.39 = $6.78
1 cream cheese @ $1.29
1 8 oz cheddar block @ $1.79
1 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢
1 grape tomatoes @ $1.19
1 Romaine hearts @ $2.19
1 baby carrots @ 59¢
1 3-lb apples @ $3.89
1 duplex cremes @ $1.39
1 whole wheat bread @ $1.29
1 20-ct tortillas @ $1.99
1 instant oatmeal @ $1.49
1 salt @ 39¢
1 Parmesan cheese @ $2.39
1 cashew mix @ $11.99

Total spent: $40.93

Trip #2:
2 dozen eggs @ $1.49 = $2.98

1 heavy whipping cream @ $1.99
1 cream cheese @$1.29
1 16-oz shredded cheddar @ $3.29
1 5-lb all-purpose flour @ $1.79

ALDI: Great deal on cookies

I found a product at ALDI that I hadn't seen before: duplex creme cookies.  There are like Oreos, but they have one chocolate cookie and one vanilla cookie, with the cream in between.

And these were a great deal: they were only $1.39.  A much smaller package of all-chocolate cookies, more similar to Oreos, at ALDI is $1.69.  Good deal!

Here's what I got on my last trip:

1 gallon milk @ $3.39
1 3-lb apples @ $3.59
2 lb grapes @ $1.98
1 whole wheat bread @ $1.29
6 cans beans @ 59¢ = $3.54
1 liquid hand soap @ 85¢
1 duplex creme cookies @ $1.39

Total spent: $16.09

ALDI: Cookie baking!

This week, my daughters are putting on a play at camp!  There's going to be a cast party afterwards, and we were asked to bring some refreshments.  My youngest daughter, the budding cook, wanted to try yet another recipe from a cookbook I checked out from the library, You Can Cook by Annabel Karmel.

It was a recipe for Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies, using semi-sweet, milk, and white chocolate chips.  So I headed over to ALDI to get the ingredients.

Unfortunately, ALDI didn't carry white chocolate chips.  But, they did have butterscotch chips.  So we made the now-renamed Triple Chip Cookies with them, and they were great!

Here's what I got this week at ALDI:

Trip #1:
1 2-pk green peppers @ $1.59
1 3-lb apples @ $3.59
1 strawberries @ 99¢
1 blueberries @ 99¢
1 baby carrots @ 99¢
3 lb bananas @ 44¢/lb = $1.32
1 cottage cheese @ $2.29
1 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢
1 Parmesan cheese @ $2.39
1 bread crumbs @ 89¢
1 whole wheat bread @ $1.29

Total spent: $17.32

Trip #2: (shown at top):
2 gallons milk @ $3.29 = $6.59
1 cottage cheese @ $2.29
1 cream cheese @ $1.29
1 margarine @ 75¢
1 16-oz shredded cheddar @ $3.29
1 3-lb yellow onions @ $1.89
1 2-pk green peppers @ $1.59

2 dozen eggs @ $1.49 = $2.98

Total spent: $33.37

Various and sundry shopping

I ran to three different stores earlier this week to pick up a few things here, a few things there.

I needed bread and cereal - we were out of sale-priced cereal from Publix - so I went to ALDI to get it.  But ALDI isn't carrying certain baking supplies at this time of year, so I went to Walmart to get those items.  And I went to the kosher meat market to buy some ground beef and chicken legs.  Next week, I'll have a great recipe using those chicken legs on Frugal Food Thursday!

Here's the rundown on this shopping:

ALDI:
1 6-ct cinnamon bagels @ $1.69
1 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢
1 cream cheese @ $1.29
1 Crispy Oats cereal @ $1.69
2 instant oatmeal @ $1.49 = $2.98
1 whole wheat bread @ $1.29

Total spent: $9.93

Walmart:
1 molasses @ $2.78
1 Nestle cocoa @ $2.44
1 baking powder @ $1.24

Total spent: $6.46

Kosher Supermarket:
1 family pack chicken drumsticks @ $12.14
1 family pack ground beef @ $18.51

Total spent: $30.65

ALDI: So easy to overspend

It's so easy to overspend at ALDI, because the prices are so great!

This week, I throttled back a little, and only got items that I really, really needed.  Just the basics.  Dairy, produce, baking supplies, that sort of thing.

Okay, except for one thing.  I found boxes of Apple Rounds - the ALDI version of Apple Jacks - on sale for $1.29.  I decided to pick one up as a treat for my youngest daughter, who is always complaining that we don't get sugared cereals.  Okay, we got one box.  Stop complaining now!

    ALDI: Buying more for summer

I'm finding I'm doing more and more of my weekly shopping at ALDI instead of Publix or other stores.

I just don't have the time right now to go to five or six stores like I used to.  (How did I do that back then?  It's not like time is going by faster... or is it?)

And it seems like the sales at Publix aren't as good as they used to be.  Sure, there are occasionally some great deals, like last week's pasta and body wash deals.  But otherwise, even on sale and with coupons, ALDI house brands often beat Publix name brands.

Not only am I buying more at ALDI, I'm buying more overall!  That's because it's summer, so the kids are home a lot more, and we're not doing as many activities in the afternoons and evenings.  The break from all the running around is nice!  But that means we're going through more milk and juice than during the school year.  And the snacks are far more tempting as well!

Here's what I got this week:

    Trip 1: (pictured above)

    2 dozen eggs @ $1.49 = $2.98
    1 6-ct plain bagels @ $1.69
    2 gallons milk @ $3.39 = $6.78
    1 16-oz shredded cheddar @ $3.29
    1 whole wheat bread @ $1.29
    1 cream cheese @ $1.29
    1 whole wheat buns @ $1.19
    2 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢ = $1.98
    1 cottage cheese @ $2.29
    6 canned beans @ 59¢ = $3.54
    2 liquid hand soap @ 85¢ = $1.70
    1 oregano @ 99¢
    1 thin wheat crackers @ $1.39
    1 woven wheat crackers @ $1.25
    1 instant oatmeal @ $1.49
    1 3-pk tomatoes @ $1.39
    2 blueberries @ $1.89 = $3.78
    1 iceberg lettuce @ 79¢
    1.82 lb bananas @ 44¢/lb = 80¢

    Tax: 11¢
    Total spent: $40.01

    Trip 2:
    2 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢

    ALDI: Cheap baking supplies

This week was the last week of school, so it was time to give presents to my two younger daughters' teachers, aides, and bus drivers.  I considered buying gifts, but with ten people to buy for, the cost was going to be huge.

So instead, I purchased inexpensive plastic containers at Walmart, then filled them with homemade cookies.  I had many items to make the cookies already in my stockpile, but I needed more flour, margarine, and of course, chocolate chips!  (Chocolate chips don't last long in my house.)

And the best prices on those items are at ALDI, of course!

Here's what I got this week:

    Trip #1 (pictured above):
    2 gallons milk @ $3.39 = $6.78
    1 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢
    2 margarine @ 79¢ = $1.58
    1 cream cheese @ $1.19
    1 8-oz cheddar cheese block @ $1.79
    3.82 lb bananas @ 35¢/lb = $1.34
    3 lb Gala apples @ $3.89
    1 shells & cheese @ $1.39
    2 semi-sweet morsels @ $1.79 = $3.58
12 cans green chilies @ 39¢ = $4.68 (found these in the discount aisle)
    1 whole-wheat bread @ $1.29
    1 5-lb all-purpose flour @ $1.79

    Total spent: $30.29

Trip #2 (mainly for produce in the new week's sale):

    1 16-oz shredded mozzarella @ $3.29
    1 iceberg lettuce @ 79¢
    1 blueberries @ $1.89
    1 strawberries @ $1.29
    1 2-pack green peppers @ $1.69
    1 instant oatmeal @ $1.49

    Total spent: $10.44
