Publix: Healthy food and couponing

As I've mentioned in a few blog posts, we're trying to eat healthier this year - specifically to cut most sugar from our diets.  After reading Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease by Robert H. Lustig, M.D., I've become convinced this is a change that we need to make for the health of our family.

But I still love to coupon, so couponing and saving while still purchasing healthy (or healthier, anyway) foods will be a challenge. Of course, this is just the beginning of our journey, and I still have lots to learn and changes to make. We are taking baby steps, and as long as we continue moving forward, all is good!

One of the great deals we got this week was on the Rudi's bread - 4 free loaves!  If you can't find the bread, look in the freezer section, where the garlic bread and rolls are stored.

Here's what I got at Publix this week:

4 Rudi's gluten-free bread @ BOGO $3.99 = $7.98
- 4 $2.00/1 Rudi's gluten-free bread printable
= 4 for FREE!  (2¢ moneymaker)

10 Star-Kist tuna @ $1.00 = $10.00
- 5 $0.55/2 Starkist Single Serve Pouch Product, exp. 3/3/13 (RP 01/06/13 #2)
- $2/10 StarKist Tuna, exp. 2/16/13 (Publix, Get A Jump On Good Health Booklet)
=  $5.25 for ten, or 53¢ each

2 Cheerios, 18 oz @ BOGO $4.99
- $1/2 General Mills Cereal, exp. 1/19/13 (SS 12/09/12 R)
= $3.99 for two, or $2.00 each
(I usually limit myself to $1.50 per box.  However, this is the big box, so it's equivalent to paying $1.00 for the smaller 9 oz box of Cheerios.  Also, we are not buying sugared cereals, which usually have higher-value coupons available.)

4 Smucker's lower-sugar preserves @ BOGO $3.59 = $7.18
- 4 $0.55/1 Smuckers Jam, Jelly Preserve or Fruit Spread Product, exp. 2/2/13 (RP 01/06/13 #2 R)
=  $4.98 for four, or $1.25 each
(These still have added sugar, but have a lot less than the other types of preserves.  And I don't want to use the preserves that have Splenda or other sugar substitutes added.  Not a perfect solution but it will make for a slightly healthier peanut butter and jelly sandwich.)

2 Hebrew National frankfurters @ BOGO $4.99
= $2.50 each
(Yes, I know, nitrates, but these are meant for special occasions.)

2 Fresh Attitudes salad greens @ BOGO $2.99
= $1.50 each

- $2 off $25 Doris Italian Market competitor coupon

Total spent: $22.18
Total saved compared to Publix full prices: $48.98

In December Target had BOGO coupons to print on Hagendaz ice cream so I used one this morning and and paid onlyk 24 cents on two pints which was tax since they are BOGO at Publix this week. I printed out more copies so will stock up before the sale ends !
