Walgreens: Always have a backup plan!

Today's trip to Walgreens shows that when you're shopping deals and using coupons, it's so important to have a backup plan.  You can make a great plan when you're home, but your plan might not work once you get to the store.

For instance, I had planned to buy two boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios (12-16.2 oz) and use 2 coupons for $0.50 off one box Honey Nut Cheerios cereal.  But when I got to the store, there was only one box of Honey Nut Cheerios in the store!  Had I brought a coupon for regular Cheerios (there was one in today's Smartsource insert), or a $1/2 coupon for any General Mills cereal, I would have been covered.  But I hadn't planned any alternate scenarios, so I ended up paying 50¢ more than I needed to.

Oh, well!  Here's what I got:

2 General Mills cereal @ $2.50 = $5.00 (receive $1 Register Rewards)
- $0.50 off one box Honey Nut Cheerios cereal
= $4.50 for two, or $2.25 each ($1.75 each after RRs)

1 U by Kotex Sleek tampons @ $3.99 (receive $2 RR)
-  $1/1 U By Kotex Tampons, exp. 9/2/12 (SS 07/08/12)
= $2.99 (99¢ after RRs)

2 Cottonelle 12-pack @ $5.00 = $10.00
- $0.50/2 Cottonelle Toilet Paper, exp. 8/12/12 (SS 07/08/12)
- 2 $1/1 Cottonelle Bathroom Tissue (Walgreens, July)
= $7.50 for two, or $3.75 each

2 Wexford folders @ 8/$1 (with in-ad coupon) = 25¢ (extra items)

Total product: $15.24
Pay with $13 in RRs ($10, $2, $1)

Total product after RRs: $2.24
Tax: 86¢

Total out of pocket: $3.10
Total saved compared to Walgreens full prices: $24.81

I thought I was the only one who did this from time to time. I have to say "My Walgreen's " as my family calls Walgreen's has been disappointing lately, I mean sale price of Cherrios $2.50 I have found better sales at the grocery and Walmart and then I also seem to have my act better together for the grocery and have my cereal coupons so I end up getting the cereal for about $1.50 to $1.60 per box. I try to hit $1.00 per box but I will not pay more than $1.70 per box because the boys eat a box of ceral in one day.

@Anonymous 2:50 - It came from a trip I took two weeks before. Here's the link to that trip: http://www.frugalfollies.com/2012/06/walgreens-ask-and-you-shall-receive.html
