Publix: Do bloggers practice what they preach?

Here at Frugal Follies, I often post about coupons, freebies, and deals. You might wonder, do I do all the things I suggest that you do?

Here's the truth: I generally do sign up for any mailing lists that I talk about, and I do get the freebies that interest me. With deals, I generally don't get them, as I'm trying to keep my spending down to a minimum. But if there's a deal for something I need and was going to buy anyway, I'll do it.

As for coupons, I generally don't print coupons until I need them, unless history has shown me that I definitely will use the coupon in the near future. And even then, sometimes I don't.

I thought about this because of two great deals at Publix this week. Philadelphia cream cheese was $1.25 this week, and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter had a buy one, get one free sale. I had previously posted about coupons for Philadelphia cream cheese and for free bread when you purchase I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. But did I print those myself?

Turns out, I went 1 for 2. I did print out the cream cheese coupons, but I neglected to print the free bread with purchase of ICBINB coupon. (But I did manage to get the ICBINB coupons, which were still available when I planned my trip.) So no free bread for me this week. I should've listened to myself!

Other than that, it was a great week at Publix for me.  Here's what I got:

2 Ragu alfredo sauce @ BOGO $2.67

2 Mueller's lasagne @ BOGO $2.19
- FREE Pasta wyb (2) Jars of Ragu Pasta Sauce, exp. 12/11/11 (RP 11/13/11) (max value $1.75)
= 44¢ for two, or 22¢ each

2 Mueller's bowties @ BOGO $1.59
- 2 $0.55/1 Mueller's Pasta printable
=  49¢ for two, or 25¢ each

6 Philadelphia cream cheese @ $1.25 = $7.50
- 2 $1.25/3 Select Kraft Dessert Brands (no longer available)
- 3 $0.50/2 Philadelphia Cream Cheeses Target printable
=  $3.50 for six, or 59¢ each

2 Sargento shredded cheese @ BOGO $3.99
- 2 $0.55/1 Sargento shredded cheese printable
= $2.89 for two, or $1.45 each

4 Triscuit @ BOGO $3.59 = $7.18
- 2 $1/2 Nabisco Crackers printable
= $5.18 for four, or $1.30 each

12 Del Monte tomatoes with green chilies (for my 3 Can Veggie Chili) @ BOGO $1.49 = $8.94
- 6 $0.75/2 Del Monte tomatoes (RP 10/30/11)
= $4.44 for 12, or 37¢ each
(I just noticed that the expiration date of this coupon was 11/13/11... whoops!  I usually check that and I don't intentionally try to use expired coupons.  Now I feel pretty bad about it.)

2 I Can't Believe It's Not Butter tubs @ BOGO $3.69
- 2 $1/1 I Can't Believe It's Not Butter! Tub Product printable
= $1.69 for two, or 85¢ each

2 Breakstone sour cream @ BOGO $2.89
- $1/2 Breakstone's Sour Cream printable
= $1.89 for two, or 95¢ each

2 Post Honey Bunches of Oats @ BOGO $3.99
- $1/2 Post Cereal, exp. 12/18/11 (SS 11/06/11 R)
= $2.99 for two, or $1.50 each

Total out of pocket: $26.18
Total saved compared to Publix full prices: $63.62

Great job. Publix had so many great deals that I couldn't stop myself. I saved $227.38 (70%) and went ahead and bought for 2 weeks. Now I don't have to shop next week and can just live off turkey! hehe

I always appreciate when a blogger is straight forward about what they do. I try very hard to "walk the walk" and do what I say I do. If I have a week that I don't feel like sticking to my $50 budget, I will just take the week off. I hardly ever do coupons, so I don't have to worry about all that! I enjoy your website. Keep up the great work!

I love this post! Sometimes it is so hard to practice what you preach...I try though. If a freebie doesnt interest me I will not sign up for I figure leave it for someone else who will use the product.:) Have a great week and a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Argh.... I wish I had printed that cream cheese coupon:) Yep, preaching what we preach is important, but I think it is important that we allow for ourselves to take a week off when needed.

I have to admit I usually only print the coupon when I need it as well. The only time I print them is if it is for something I know I will definitely use. Keep up the great work! I love reading your posts!
