More shopping off my route

A few weeks ago, I tried shopping off my route in an area where I occasionally run errands.  I found myself in the same area again and decided to try the stores once more to see if the deals held up.

First, I went to Big Lots.  I was hoping to find lots of cheap cereal there, but was disappointed to find mostly brand name cereals at maybe 25% off the grocery store prices.  Not a good deal.  Just before I checked out, though, I found some bags of Malt-O-Meal cereal, and bought 4 bags of the Cinnamon Toast Crunch knockoff.

I also found a display of day-old bread there.   At first I was excited... until I saw the prices.  Day-old bread loaves were $1.20 -- but I can get fresh bread at ALDI for $1.19!  How disappointing.  I did see some whole-wheat English muffins for that same price, so I picked up two.

Then, I went to an Italian market chain in my area.  Last time, I had found lots of prepackaged, discounted produce there.  This time, the pickings were slim, and didn't look that great.  I passed.  But I did pick up some jalapenos and sweet peppers to make poppers.

Here's what I got on the two trips:

Big Lots:
4 Malt-O-Meal Cinnamon Toasters @ $1.00 = $4.00
2 Thomas' whole wheat muffics @ $1.20 = $2.40
Total spent = $6.40

Italian market:
2 trays jalapenos @ $1.00 = $2.00
1 tray mini sweet peppers @ $2.23
Total spent = $4.23

Those mini sweet peppers look fabulous! I hope you are going to use some of the seeds to grown them. We always have peppers growing in the garden from those we eat, and my husband loves his fresh habaneros.

I completely agree with you about Big Lots, I rarely find anything in there.
