My kids come home from school hungry. Two of them have lunch while it's still morning, so by the mid-afternoon their tummies are growling, and the first words out of their mouths are "Mom, do we have any snacks?"
Of course, they want something yummy, but I want them to have a healthy snack. That's one reason I was excited to find out about
Simply 7 Snacks!
The founders of Simply 7 started their company because of a distressing trend they noticed in their local grocery stores: food made with ingredients that most people don’t recognize and can’t even pronounce. The idea behind Simply 7 products is ingredients that are natural and simple - you should be able to identify the raw vegetable, fruit, grain, or legume the ingredients in their products come from. They also wanted to show people that simple ingredients are actually exceptionally delicious.
I received a huge box full of 10 different full-sized bags of Simply 7 Snacks:
- Hummus Chips: Sea Salt, Tomato Basil, Spicy Chili Pepper, and Roasted Red Pepper varieties
- Lentil Chips: Sea Salt, Creamy Dill, Jalapeno, and Bruschetta varieties
- Pomegranate Chips: Sea Salt, Black Pepper, and White Cheddar varieties
Checking out the packages, I was happy to see that the ingredient labels were indeed very simple. No hard to pronounce "food" items listed! For instance, the Lentil Chips with Sea Salt has the following ingredients: lentil flour, potato starch, expeller pressed safflower oil, and sea salt. That's it. No preservatives or artificial flavors.
Even a more complicated flavor like the Spicy Chili Pepper Hummus Chips had a longer, but still easily understandable, ingredient list: chickpea flour, potato starch, expeller pressed safflower oil, corn flour, salt, whey powder, garlic powder, sugar, spices, onion powder, dehydrated red bell pepper, olive oil, sesame oil, natural flavors, paprika extract. No artificial colors to make the beautiful orange-red color of the chips!
Best of all, there are no trans fats and no GMOs in these snacks. Many varieties are also gluten-free!
But, of course, none of that matters if the snacks don't taste good. So I did a taste test with my kids, with three of the varieties and some dips.
The kids really loved the Creamy Dill Lentil chips. They went well with creamy, sour-cream based dips like an onion dip. The dill flavor really shined through. And the shape was great for scooping up dip!
The Sea Salt Hummus Chips were also a big hit. The kids thought they went best with - you guessed it - hummus! But I think the spicier hummus chip varieties would go well with a bean dip. Again, the scoop shape made it easy for the kids to scoop up a healthy snack!
The Pomegranate White Cheddar variety, unfortunately, didn't go over all that well. The combination of the pomegranate and white cheddar was very different... but my kids didn't care for the pomegranate part of the chip. I could see where these Sea Salt Pomegranate Chips might be delicious with a fruit salsa, though.
Overall, we really loved the Hummus and Lentil chip varieties, and we'll be eating them for some time to come!
