Over budget for the first time this year! (Friday Figures 1/31/14)

I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!

Welcome to Friday Figures! Link up your best grocery deals below!

I went over my budget of $80 per week for a family of five this week.  That's because I bought meat - I don't buy my meat at the supermarket, but at a kosher specialty store.  I buy the less expensive cuts of chicken and beef, but I still spent $45 there.  But I'm still averaging well below $80, so all is good!

Here's what I got this week:

ALDI: Super Bowl snacks

It's the Super Bowl on Sunday, which means that it's time for my annual Appetizers for Dinner meal!

I don't make a main course for dinner on the Super Bowl; I just make snacks.  Jalapeno Poppers, nachos, stuffed mushrooms, pizza bagels, veggies with dip, and so on. And, of course, desserts as well. The kids love this meal!

I went to ALDI twice this week, once to pick up a few extra things from the last sales week and today to get items to make the appetizers!

Here's what I got:

Trip #1 (pictured above):

2 blueberries @ $1.59 = $3.18
2 whole wheat bread @ $1.29 = $2.58
1 duplex cremes @ $1.35
1 celery @ $1.29
1 20-ct tortillas @ $1.99
1 3-lb onions @ $1.69

Chicken with Ginger Dressing (Frugal Food Thursday)

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

Last week, I found a great deal at Publix on Naturally Fresh refrigerated salad dressing - the store paid me $1.00 for each jar!  Besides the usual suspects of ranch and blue cheese dressing, I found a ginger dressing.  I bought it thinking it would be great on salad, but I decided to give it a try in a stir-fry that evening.

It worked great!  I loved the fresh ginger flavor.  And it wasn't too vinegary.

Here's the recipe:

Publix: Store coupons are the best!

Now that Walmart accepts Publix BOGO deals in Florida, what's keeping customers at Publix?  Besides the clean, stocked, well-organized stores and the friendly, helpful staff, another great part of shopping at Publix is that there are lots of store coupons available! Those coupons won't be accepted at Walmart, so to save the most, shop at Publix and combine manufacturer's and store coupons - both from Publix and from other stores that your local store accepts.

I headed out to Publix on Wednesday to get some deals based on Publix store coupons from the new green Grocery Flyer and the new purple Health & Beauty Flyer, as well as the Healthy Savings and Start Your Year booklets.  I was also able to get some Green Giant chips, which were sold out when I went at the beginning of the sales week.  And, I picked up more of the South Beach diet bars, Quaker oatmeal, Cascadian Farm granola, and Goldfish crackers that I got last week as well.  Yum!

Here's what I got:

2 South Beach Diet Good-To-Go bars @ BOGO $2.79
- 2 $1/1 South Beach Diet Product printable

- 4 $0.75/1 Cascadian Farm Product printable
- 2 $1/2 Cascadian Farm Healthy Savings Publix Coupon or printable (look under Additional Ads)
= $5.00 for four, or $1.25 each

4 Quaker Oats oatmeal @ BOGO $3.79 = $7.58
- 2 $0.75/2 Quaker Oatmeal, Instant Oatmeal, or Cold Cereal, exp. 2/28/14 (RP 01/12/14)
= $6.08 for four, or $1.52 each

2 Pepperidge Farm goldfish @ BOGO $2.49
- $0.50/2 Goldfish Crackers Target printable (one coupon per person)
= $1.99 for two, or $1.00 each

Friday Figures 01-17-14: Link up your grocery deals!

I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!

Welcome to Friday Figures! This weekly grocery deal linkup is replacing the previous linkup, Wednesday Weekly Shopping.

This week, I did a lot more shopping - two trips to Publix and trips to ALDI, CVS, and Walmart.  I usually don't have time to go to five different stores, so don't get used to all of those stores!

Here's what I got this week:

Simply 7 Snacks Review and Giveaway

My kids come home from school hungry.  Two of them have lunch while it's still morning, so by the mid-afternoon their tummies are growling, and the first words out of their mouths are "Mom, do we have any snacks?"

Of course, they want something yummy, but I want them to have a healthy snack.  That's one reason I was excited to find out about Simply 7 Snacks!

The founders of Simply 7 started their company because of a distressing trend they noticed in their local grocery stores: food made with ingredients that most people don’t recognize and can’t even pronounce. The idea behind Simply 7 products is ingredients that are natural and simple - you should be able to identify the raw vegetable, fruit, grain, or legume the ingredients in their products come from. They also wanted to show people that simple ingredients are actually exceptionally delicious.

I received a huge box full of 10 different full-sized bags of Simply 7 Snacks:
  • Hummus Chips: Sea Salt, Tomato Basil, Spicy Chili Pepper, and Roasted Red Pepper varieties
  • Lentil Chips: Sea Salt, Creamy Dill, Jalapeno, and Bruschetta varieties
  • Pomegranate Chips: Sea Salt, Black Pepper, and White Cheddar varieties

Checking out the packages, I was happy to see that the ingredient labels were indeed very simple.  No hard to pronounce "food" items listed!  For instance, the Lentil Chips with Sea Salt has the following ingredients: lentil flour, potato starch, expeller pressed safflower oil, and sea salt.  That's it.  No preservatives or artificial flavors.

Even a more complicated flavor like the Spicy Chili Pepper Hummus Chips had a longer, but still easily understandable, ingredient list: chickpea flour, potato starch, expeller pressed safflower oil, corn flour, salt, whey powder, garlic powder, sugar, spices, onion powder, dehydrated red bell pepper, olive oil, sesame oil, natural flavors, paprika extract.  No artificial colors to make the beautiful orange-red color of the chips!

Best of all, there are no trans fats and no GMOs in these snacks.  Many varieties are also gluten-free!

But, of course, none of that matters if the snacks don't taste good.  So I did a taste test with my kids, with three of the varieties and some dips.

The kids really loved the Creamy Dill Lentil chips.  They went well with creamy, sour-cream based dips like an onion dip.  The dill flavor really shined through.  And the shape was great for scooping up dip!

The Sea Salt Hummus Chips were also a big hit.  The kids thought they went best with - you guessed it - hummus!  But I think the spicier hummus chip varieties would go well with a bean dip.  Again, the scoop shape made it easy for the kids to scoop up a healthy snack!

The Pomegranate White Cheddar variety, unfortunately, didn't go over all that well.  The combination of the pomegranate and white cheddar was very different... but my kids didn't care for the pomegranate part of the chip.  I could see where these Sea Salt Pomegranate Chips might be delicious with a fruit salsa, though.

Overall, we really loved the Hummus and Lentil chip varieties, and we'll be eating them for some time to come!

Would you like to try Simply 7 products?  Check out the Simply 7 store locator to find them in a store near you - I found them at some independent nutrition stores.  Learn more about them at their website or on Facebook.

Or would you like to try them for free?

Frugal Follies is hosting a giveaway for a Simply 7 Snacks prize pack, including 10 bags of Simply 7 Snacks!

The giveaway is open to residents of the 50 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia.  The giveaway ends on Sunday, February 2, 2014.  To enter, use the Rafflecopter form below!

Publix: Great deals on South Beach and Cascadian Farm products

This was a fun week shopping at Publix.  I was able to find two coupon booklets - the Healthy Savings and the Start Your Year Off with Big Savings booklets.  I'll definitely be going back later in the shopping week to get deals that use coupons from these booklets!  I also found the Best Meals Happen at Home coupons.  I took two of the Green Giant chips coupons, but when I went to find the product, I found the shelf completely empty.  Well, there was one bag there, but here in the land of true BOGO that doesn't help you get a deal.

Otherwise, I loved the South Beach Diet and Cascadian Farm deals.  The deal for Finish detergent gave a fairly high out of pocket, but we needed detergent.  Isn't it interesting how sometimes deals come right when you need them?

Here's what I got this week.

2 South Beach Diet Good-To-Go bars @ BOGO $2.79
- 2 $1/1 South Beach Diet Product printable
= 79¢ for two, or 40¢ each

- 2 $0.75/1 Cascadian Farm Product printable
- $1/2 Cascadian Farm Healthy Savings Publix Coupon or printable (look under Additional Ads)

2 Fresh Express lettuce @ BOGO $3.99
- $1.50/2 Fresh Express Bags, exp. 3/31/14 (SS 01/05/14 #2)
= $2.49 for two, or $1.25 each

4 Quaker Oats oatmeal @ BOGO $3.79 = $7.58
- 2 $0.75/2 Quaker Oatmeal, Instant Oatmeal, or Cold Cereal, exp. 2/28/14 (RP 01/12/14)
= $6.08 for four, or $1.52 each

Publix: Deals on vitamins and bandages

A couple of weeks ago, I started the Friday Figures link up here at Frugal Follies.  It replaces the old Wednesday Weekly Shopping.  I'm glad I restarted the linkup, because it helps me save!

I go to Publix on Thursday or Friday for the deals I find, but then over the weekend, I check out the other shopping trips in the linkup.  Sometimes I find deals that I completely overlooked.

For instance, last week I missed deals for Sundown vitamins and Band-Aid bandages.  So I went to Publix again before the end of the shopping week to catch these deals.  I also got some more Babybel cheese (the first package disappeared within a day of the last shopping trip) and bananas (I dislike the ones at ALDI).

Here are all the details:

3.03 lb bananas @ 69¢/lb = $2.09

2 Band-Aid bandages @ $2.39 = $4.78
- $2/2 Band-Aid products printable (zip 03103)
- 2 $0.75/1 Johnson & Johnson Red Cross Brand Gauzes, Covers, Wraps or Tapes, COACH Sports Care Item or BAND-AID Brand Adhesive Bandages, exp. 1/17/14 (Publix Purple H&B Advantage)

ALDI: More marshmallows!

There had been a deal at Publix several weeks ago where if you purchased three boxes of Kellogg's Rice Krispies, you could get a free gallon of milk.  I did two of those deals, getting a total of six boxes of cereal.  The free milk was finished quickly, but the Rice Krispies are still sitting in the pantry.  I guess that is everyone's last choice of cereal.

So last week, I bought marshmallows at ALDI to use to make Rice Krispies Treats.  I had also bought chocolate chips for cookies.  Well, the kids saw the two items and decided to combine them.  They put some marshmallows in a bowl, added the chocolate chips, and melted them in the microwave, Voila, s'mores filling, without the pesky graham crackers.

So, when I went back to ALDI this week, I had to buy another bag.  We'll see if these get made into Rice Krispies Treats...

Here's what I got this week at ALDI:

1 gallon milk @ $3.39
1 romaine hearts @ $1.99
1 celery @ $1.29
1 3-lb apples @ $2.99
1 16-oz shredded cheese @ $3.29
1 cottage cheese @ $2.29
2 whole wheat bread @ $1.29 = $2.58
1 honey @ $3.19
1 marshmallows @ 89¢
1 instant oatmeal @ $1.49
4 tuna @ 68¢ = $2.72
1 liquid hand soap @ 85¢

Tax: 6¢
Total spent: $27.02

CVS: Luck at the coupon printing center

I haven't shopped much at the drug stores lately, but I had $6 in Extra Care Bucks to use at CVS by last Sunday.  I wasn't that excited about the deals, so I figured I'd just go and buy my favorite product to purchase with ECBs, toilet paper.

My plans changed a little when I got to the coupon printing center.  I received $2 in ECBs for my fall shopping - so I guess I'll be going at least one more time in the near future.  And I got a coupon for Campbell's soup.  So, I added that to my list.

Here's what I got:

1 Scott extra soft 18 rolls toilet paper @ $6.99
- $1/1 Scott Extra Bath Tissue, exp. 2/22/14 (SS 01/12/14)
= $5.99

1 Campbell's tomato soup @ $1.00
- 50¢/1 Campbell's soup (CVS coupon printing center)
= 50¢

- $6 ECB from previous trip

Tax: 42¢
Total spent: 91¢
Total saved compared to CVS full prices: $11.99

scourge

THE SCOURGE (Brilliant Darkness, Book 1)

Seventeen-year-old Groundling, Fennel, is Sightless. She's never been able to see her lush forest home, but she knows its secrets. She knows how the shadows shift when she passes under a canopy of trees. She knows how to hide in the cool, damp caves when the Scourge comes. She knows how devious and arrogant the Groundlings' tree-dwelling neighbors, the Lofties, can be.

And she's always known this day would come--the day she faces the Scourge alone.

The Sightless, like Fenn, are mysteriously protected from the Scourge, the gruesome creatures roaming the forests, reeking of festering flesh and consuming anything--and anyone--living. A Sightless Groundling must brave the Scourge and bring fresh water to the people of the forest. Today, that task becomes Fenn's.

Fenn will have a Lofty Keeper, Peree, as her companion. Everyone knows the Lofties wouldn't hesitate to shoot an arrow through the back of an unsuspecting Groundling like Fenn, but Peree seems different. A boy with warm, rough hands who smells like summer, he is surprisingly kind and thoughtful. Although Fenn knows his people are treacherous, she finds herself wanting to trust him.

As their forest community teeters on the brink of war, Fenn and Peree must learn to work together to survive the Scourge and ensure their people's survival. But when Fenn uncovers a secret that shatters her truths, she's forced to decide who and what to protect--her people, her growing love for Peree, or the elusive dream of lasting peace in the forest.

A tale of star-crossed lovers, strange creatures, and secretive, feuding factions, THE SCOURGE introduces readers to a rich and exciting new world where nothing is as it seems.
