Busy creative family breakfasts

Disclosure: The information and prize pack have been provided by General Mills through Platefull Co-Op.

We all know that breakfast is an important start to your family’s day, but all too often, it’s rushed, hectic, and…monotonous. So what can be done to make breakfast a little more delightful and fun?

Here are a few great ideas from Target to make your quick but fun breakfasts for your family!

I received a big box filled with yummy breakfast foods from Target and General Mills (including
Nature Valley® Protein Granola, Nature Valley® Granola Bars, Honey Nut Cheerios® Medley Crunch™ cereal, Trix® cereal, Quaker® Oats, Jif® peanut butter,  Nutella® mini cups, and Grandma Hoerner’s® Big Slice™ apples snack), and I was challenged to come up with my own yummy, quick family breakfast.  Here's what I came up with:

I started with a nice, healthy bowl of Quaker oatmeal.  I added cinnamon and just a touch of brown sugar.  Then, I topped the oatmeal with Grandma Hoerner’s® Big Slice™ cherry-vanilla apples.  Yum!

Check out the Target Breakfast Twist site for more creative ideas. What other creative breakfasts do you make for your family?  Leave a comment below!

Personalized Jewelry: A Great Gift Idea

Thanks to Hnex for sponsoring this post!

If you are looking for the perfect gift for a dear friend or loved one, personalized jewelry is almost guaranteed to bring a big smile to the recipient's face. Customizing a piece of jewelry for a friend or loved one is a thoughtful and personal gift that will make the wearer think of you every time he or she puts it on.

Birthstone Jewelry Gifts

Among the most popular types of personalized jewelry gifts is birthstone pieces. Whether the recipient loves rings, bracelets or necklaces, you can find options to personalize these pieces in jewelry stores, online and even at mass retailers. You can have birthstone gems placed for just the recipient, or surprise them with an anniversary piece featuring stones representative of both the recipient and their sweetie.

Family-themed jewelry gifts are another popular choice for personalization. With these types of gifts, each of the members of the loved one's family has their birthstone placed on the piece in a special way. The recipient gets to carry their family with them in a symbolic way every time they put on your special gift.

Engraving

Whether it's a special anniversary date, a romantic quote or a funny inside joke, engraving a piece of jewelry is the ultimate way to personalize and customize your gift. A heart charm with a tiny inscribed poem to a special daughter on her 16th birthday, an anniversary band with an eternal love message from a husband to his wife, or an embossed message of hope on a bracelet for a dear friend who has been sick are all examples of ideas that will inspire and touch the recipient.

Coin Jewelry Personalization

Perhaps your loved one has a treasured collection of rare coins sitting in box somewhere. Imagine the look of surprise and awe when they open up your gift and see their special coin set in shiny platinum or gold. Their coin can be mounted on a necklace pendant or turned into a money clip. The idea of turning coins into wearable jewelry is rarely thought of, but it makes an incredibly personal gift. You can learn more about personalized coin jewelry from a company like Houston Numismatic Exchange Inc. They can customize any special coin, and set it in your choice of metals. They are able to add special laser cutting and stones that will reflect the personality and unique tastes of the recipient.

A bit over average (Friday Figures 02/21/14)

I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!

Welcome to Friday Figures! Link up your best grocery deals below!

This week I spent a lot more than my target amount of $80 per week.  I have some guests coming to town, so I spent a little more than normal.  I'll have to cut back in the coming weeks to make up!  But I am still averaging well below $80 per week for the year, so that is good.

Here's what I got this week:

Publix: Just not my week

Usually in this space each week, I showcase all of the great deals I got at Publix.  Generally I spend somewhere from $15 to $25 and saved 70% or 80%.

Not this week.  I didn't have a lot of time to plan my trip, and the deals I found weren't all that great.  I had trouble printing the Publix Best Meals Happen at Home coupons, so I didn't save nearly as much on the items I did get.  And some of the coupons I brought to the store ended up not being matches for the products I'd hope to buy.

So here is what I got.  I hope next week is better!

4 Knorr Sides @ BOGO $1.59 = $3.18
- 2 $0.50/2 Knorr Pasta and Rice Sides, exp. 2/23/14 (RP 01/26/14)
= $2.18 for four, or 55¢ each

2 Lipton tea bags 100-ct @ BOGO $4.69
- 2 $0.50/1 Lipton Tea Bags, Tea & Honey, or Iced Tea Mix Product, exp. 2/23/14 (RP 01/26/14 R)
= $3.69 for two, or $1.85 each

1 Quaker Warm & Crunchy Granola @ $2.50
- $1/1 Quaker Warm and Crunchy Granola, exp. 3/9/14 (RP 01/26/14 #2)
= $1.50

Total spent: $7.37
Total saved compared to Publix full prices: $12.36

Learn more about Kimberley Montpetit's new book, Paris Cravings, then enter for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card or PayPal cash!

Paris Cravings
Can life really turn on a dime,
a missed bus—
or a stuck pastry shop door?

Chloe Dillard’s life has always been complicated. Her mother is a neurotic romance novelist and her boyfriend, Mathew, has been pressuring her to go “all the way”.

But after The Worst Night of Her Life, Chloe escapes on her Senior Class trip to the swoon-worthy city of Paris which takes her mind off her troubles—temporarily. On the final leg of her dream trip, Chloe squeezes in one final run for a last-minute box of decadent pastries. Add a stuck door, subtract a broken four-inch heel from her cute strappy sandals, and Chloe ends up one stuck girl on the bakery shop floor with a sprained ankle.

Rescued by the shop owner’s dreamy son with chocolate-syrup eyes, the beautiful city of Paris suddenly becomes Chloe’s personal secret adventure. And even though Jean-Paul, the oh-so-kind La Patisserie shop boy is the gentlemanly guy Chloe has always dreamed of, even he has a girlfriend.

The police are tracking her down as a run-away, Mom’s having a nervous breakdown over her daughter’s “disappearance”, and Chloe’s just trying to have a Happily-Ever-After even as her dreams with Matt are swirling down the drain.

Could being lost in the city of Paris be just what the doctor ordered? What’s a girl to do in the most romantic city in the world?

$50 Amazon or PayPal Giveaway - A Reign Supreme Book Blast

Learn more about Richard Crystal's new book A Reign Supreme, then enter for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift code or PayPal cash!

Reign Supreme
A Reign Supreme by Richard Crystal

When a copper deposit is discovered on the land of the Makenda tribe in eastern Kenya, a young king, Ule Samanga, is told to relocate his people to a refugee camp in Nairobi or risk imprisonment. When all appears lost, the young king discovers the existence of Curtis Jackson, a mysterious half-brother presently living in New York. Believing this unexpected news is an omen from the spirit of his ancestors, he eagerly seeks his help to save their sacred tribal homeland. A struggling mortgage broker and former jazz prodigy, Curtis initially has no interest in developing a relationship with his newly found African family. But when he’s presented with an intriguing business offer, he embarks on a journey to Africa that becomes a spiritual odyssey, changing him in ways he never imagined.

In this assured debut, Richard Crystal weaves a complex story of contemporary moral imperatives conceived during Obama’s victorious election as America’s first black President. Themes of corporate malfeasance and exploitation will resonate with readers of The Constant Gardener and Blood Diamond. But beyond the various political machinations, readers will find a heartwarming story infused with the strains of Coltrane, the history of jazz and the enduring power of family.

Another cheap week! (Friday Figures 02/07/14)

I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!

Welcome to Friday Figures! Link up your best grocery deals below!

I had a pretty cheap week shopping this week.  I had one great shopping trip at Publix, as well as a quick trip to ALDI.  I'll need to go to ALDI again to stock up on milk and eggs pretty soon, though.

Here's what I got this week:

Publix: Fries and cereal moneymakers!

There were a couple of great moneymakers at Publix this week - that is, if you live in Florida, land of true BOGO.  If an item is on a BOGO sale, and you have a BOGO coupon, that means that you get two for free!  And you can still stack the BOGO coupon with a store or manufacturer's coupon to save even more!

I did this both for Alexia fries and Cheerios.  There's a Publix coupon for free Alexia products when you buy a Gorton's product, which was also on sale this week. I also used an Alexia manufacturer's coupon along with the free product coupon. And there's a BOGO Cheerios manufacturer's coupon matching the BOGO sale; I combined that with a Target coupon for General Mills cereal.  I love getting free stuff!

Here's what I got for the whole trip:

2 Gorton's fish fillets @ BOGO $4.49
- $1/2 Gorton's Items printable
= $3.49 for two, or $1.75 each
(I think I made a mistake on this one. The coupon said the free Alexia products was when you purchased a Gorton's item between 8.2-17.4 oz. The one I purchased was 6.3 oz. Be sure to check the weight of the Gorton's item before purchasing.)

2 Alexia fries @ $3.79 = $7.58
- 2 FREE Alexia Bread or Potato Item wyb Gorton's Seafood, exp. 2/7/14 (Publix Game Day Flyer)
- $1/1 Alexia Frozen Item, exp. 3/2/14 (SS 01/19/14) (all I had)
= $1.00 moneymaker

4 Cheerios @ BOGO $4.45 = $8.90
- 2 B1G1 Cheerios printable
- $0.75/2 General Mills Cereal Target printable
= 75¢ moneymaker

2 Nature's Own honey wheat bread @ BOGO $3.15
- 2 $0.55/1 Nature's Own Bread or Bun printable (zip code 64055)
= $2.05 for two, or $1.03 each

4 Hefty slider bags @ $1.50 = $6.00
- 2 $1/2 Hefty Slider Bags, exp. 3/31/14 (RP 01/05/14)
= $4.00 for four, or $1.00 each

2 Mama Francesca Parmesan @ BOGO $3.79

1 Sunsweet dried cherries @ $2.75
- $0.75/1 Sunsweet Dried Fruit, exp. 3/31/14 (SS 11/10/13 R)
 = $2.00

12 Celestial Seasonings tea @ $1.99 = $23.88
- 12 $0.75/1 Celestial Seasonings Tea, exp. 3/8/14 (SS 12/08/13 #2 R or 01/12/14)
=  $14.88 for twelve, or $1.24 each

2 Chips Ahoy! @ BOGO $3.73
- $0.75/2 Nabisco Cookie or Cracker Product, exp. 3/8/14 (SS 01/26/14)
= $2.98 for two, or $1.49 each

6 Muller yogurt @ $1.00 = $6.00
- 3 $1/2 Muller Yogurt Products, exp. 2/28/14 (RP 01/05/14)
- 2 $1/3 Muller Yogurt, exp. 2/7/14 (Publix Game Day Flyer)
= $1.00 for six, or 17¢ each

1 Angel Soft 24-pack @ $5.00
-  $1.00/1 Angel Soft Bath Tissue, exp. (RP 01/05/14)

- 2 $5 off $30 Winn-Dixie coupon (Enjoy the City)

Tax: 66¢
Total spent: $26.35

$50 Amazon Gift Code Giveaway - Muse Unexpected Book Blast

Learn more about the new book Muse Unexpected, then enter for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift code below!

Muse Unexpected

"We're Muses. Not vampires, not fairies, not werewolves. We're Muses." Sophie was sure her mother had reached an epic level of crazy. ‘We're Muses?' She thought Muses were lame, not to mention she found the idea ridiculous. However, Sophie couldn't explain away her physical transformation that made Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries look like a bad Walmart make-over, not to mention why her mood swings triggered an uncontrollable ability to shoot powerful bursts of energy out of her hands.

Sophie soon realizes modern day Muses have evolved into powerful guardians of humankind, tasked with keeping mortals on the right path and the original Olympians locked away from the world. But old hatreds don't die easily, especially for immortal enemies that have an eternity to plot and gather their forces. Well aware of the Fates' foretelling of another Olympian war, and a young Muse that would rise up as a warrior and defeat them, the Olympians have vowed to either possess Sophie or destroy her. Either way, they will make sure everyone associated with their imprisonment will reap an eternal damnation in the Underworld, leaving the Olympians to restore Mount Olympus and force humankind into a future of never-ending servitude and misery.
