Publix: All this for the price of one!

I went to Publix late last sales week to pick up a few deals I didn't get last time - Quaker granola bars, Daisy sour cream, and some more of the Chips Ahoy! which my kids demolished in less than a week.  (Okay, I helped.)

I also needed to get some Goodnites for my daughter.  These cost $19.99.

After deals and coupons, my bill totaled $17.12 - less than the full price of the Goodnites! I was able to pay the whole bill with my health care spending card, and thus the cookies, granola bars, and sour cream cost nothing out of pocket!

Here's the deals:

4 Quaker granola bars @ BOGO $2.89 = $5.78
- 2 $1/2 Quaker Product, exp. 9/7/13 (RP 08/04/13)
- 2 $1/2 Quaker Item Target printable
= $1.78 for four, or 45¢ each

2 Chips Ahoy @ BOGO $3.65
- $1/2 Nabisco cookies printable coupon (no longer available)
= $2.65 for two, or $1.33 each

1 Daisy sour cream @ $2.00
- $0.50/1 Daisy Brand Sour Cream Target printable
= $1.50

1 Goodnites @ $19.99
- $2/1 GoodNites Underwear printable
- $3/1 Huggies Publix ad coupon
= $14.99

- $5 off $30 Winn-Dixie coupon (Enjoy the City)

Tax: $1.20
Total spent: $17.12
Total saved compared to Publix full prices: $25.43

Biscuit Mini Pizzas (Frugal Food Thursday)

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

These recipes are also listed at these wonderful linkup parties - thank you to all the hosts for allowing me to link up!

One important frugal skill is to be able to use items that you already have in a way that they weren't originally intended.  That way, you don't have to go out and buy something new.

For instance, I purchased several Grands biscuits on sale with coupons a few weeks ago and got them all for free!  But we don't eat biscuits a lot at dinner.

So, I decided to use the biscuits as a base for pizza! I got this idea from a child's cookbook, I have to admit. I didn't really use measurements - add as much or as little of the toppings as you want!

Here's the recipe:

Publix: Better quality for the same price!

One thing I love about couponing is that you can indulge yourself with treats from time to time, treats that you wouldn't be able to afford if you stuck to a tight budget without coupons.

For instance, this week I was able to buy chocolate chip cookies (yum!) and garlic toast for pretty cheap. Sure, I could make those items from scratch, but the cost would probably be about the same as it would be to buy these items on sale and with coupons!

Another thing about coupons is that you can buy a better quality brand for the same amount as the cheaper brand.  Usually I'm not picky about house brands versus name brands, but there are a few products where there really is a difference.  For instance, I've found that the Mama Francesca brand of Parmesan cheese is much more tasty than the house brand at ALDI.  So when I find Mama Francesca on sale with coupons, like it was this week, I always stock up!

    Here's what I got:

2 Pepperidge Farm garlic toast @ BOGO $2.89
    - 2 $0.55/1 Pepperidge Farm Frozen Bread or Rolls (The Coupon Book)
    =  $1.79 for two, or 90¢ each

2 Arnold whole wheat buns @ BOGO $3.59
    - 2 $0.50/1 Arnold Brownberry or Oroweat buns or rolls, 8 ct., (Target coupon)
    = $2.59 for two, or $1.30 each

2 Weight Watchers ice cream sandwiches @ BOGO $5.79
    - 2 $1/1 Weight Watchers Frozen Novelty Carton printable
    = $3.79 for two, or $1.90 each

    4 Mama Francesca Parmesan @ $3.00 = $12.00
    - 2 $1/2 Mama Francesca Premium Grated Cheeses printable
    = $10.00 for four, or $2.50 each

    2 Chips Ahoy @ BOGO $3.65
    - $1/2 Chips Ahoy Cookies printable
    = $2.65 for two, or $1.33 each

    2 Ken's marinade @ BOGO $2.99
    - 2 $1/1 Ken's Marinade, exp. 9/30/13 (SS 08/11/13)
    = 99¢ for two, or 50¢ each

    - $5 off $30 Winn-Dixie coupon (Enjoy the City)

    Tax: 35¢
    Total spent: $17.16

ALDI: Great prices on peppers, carrots, and onions

I took a trip over to ALDI this week.  Lots of basics, this week, including some great prices on veggies - peppers, carrots, and onions were on sale this week. I love ALDI's produce prices!

    Here's what I got:

    2 2-lb sweet onions @ 69¢ = $1.38

    2 dozen eggs @ $1.39 = $2.78
    1 cream cheese @ $1.29
    1 16-oz shredded cheddar @ $3.29
    1 3-lb apples @ $3.49
    1 64-oz apple juice @ $1.39
    1 Parmesan cheese @ $2.39
    1 maxi pads @ $3.19
    1 American cheese singles @ $1.79
    2 whole wheat bread @ $1.29 = $2.58

    Publix: Check coupon expiration dates!

    (Sorry about the lousy picture!)

I made a second trip to Publix in the last sales week to pick up some Brawny paper towels.  I didn't have enough coupons at my first trip, but after I picked up my free coupon inserts - they run a week late - I had eight of them, enough to get paper towels for 40¢ a roll!

I also had more coupons for Sargento cheese sticks and Tradewinds tea.  I rounded out the shopping trip with some hot dogs and pasta that were on a BOGO sale but I didn't have coupons for, to bring my total above $30 so that I could use a Winn-Dixie $5 off $30 coupon.

But when I got to the register, the Sargento and Tradewinds coupons weren't accepted - they had expired!  They were still good on my first trip at the beginning of the week, but the expiration date had passed since then.  I lost out on $5 in savings.  (That's why this place is called Frugal Follies - I mess up a lot!)

So if you shop at the end of the deal week, be absolutely sure to check the expiration dates!

    Here's what I got:

    8 Brawny paper towel single rolls @ BOGO $1.89 = $7.56
    - 8 $0.55/1 Brawny Paper Towels, exp. 9/14/13 (RP 08/11/13)
    =  $3.16 for two, or 40¢ each

    6 Sargento cheese sticks @ BOGO $3.69 = $11.07
    = $1.85 each

    2 Tradewinds tea @ BOGO $2.99
    = $1.50 each

2 Hebrew National hot dogs @ BOGO $4.99
    = $2.50 each

    6 Mueller's pasta @ BOGO $1.59 = $4.77 each
    = 80¢ each

    - $5 off $30 Winn-Dixie coupon (Enjoy the City)

    Tax: 34¢
    Total spent: $22.32
Total saved compared to Publix full prices: $40.78

    Honey Cake (Frugal Food Thursday)

    honey cake

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

These recipes are also listed at these wonderful linkup parties - thank you to all the hosts for allowing me to link up!

The Jewish holidays are coming up, which means it's time to make some honey cake!

This is my mom's recipe. She makes it in a 9x13 pan, but I decided to use a 9x5 loaf pan instead, and serve it as slices instead of squares. Works either way!

From a frugal perspective, if you don't have all the spices listed, don't worry about it; just leave one or two of them out. It will still be tasty. And save some leftover coffee for this recipe! You can freeze leftover coffee in ice trays, then defrost the coffee ice cubes in the microwave.

    Here's the recipe:

Another cheap week! (Wednesday Weekly Shopping)

    Coupon Shopping
I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!

I had another week where I spent considerably less than my budgeted $80 per week.  Even though I made two trips to Publix and one to ALDI, I only spent a little more than $57 this week.  Yay!

But we're out of meat, so this week we'll be stocking up.  That means that next week's total will definitely be above average.  Boo...

Here's the details for last week:

    Follicleanse Shampoo Review

Thanks to Healthy Hair Plus for providing me with a sample of Follicleanse Shampoo!

I'm generally not that picky about the shampoo I use.  Usually I get whatever I can find on sale and with coupons.  But those products aren't always the best to care for my hair.

So I was really excited to try out Follicleanse Shampoo - would it really make a difference in my hair?

The makers of Follicleanse, Healthy Hair Plus, claim that Follicleanse deep cleans the dirt, oil and product build-up in hair. It eliminates dandruff, oily scalp, and flaking. Follicleanse reduces oil production from sebaceous glands and infuses vitamins and botanicals to heal and revitalize. They also claim that it increase blood flow to the scalp and helps stop DHT accumulation that can cause hair thinning and loss.

Follicleanse is an herbal shampoo. And who doesn't love the smell of an herbal shampoo? But the herbs aren't there just to make your hair smell nice, they also claim to help with your hair! Fenugreek is a natural stimulant that increases blood supply including oxygen and vital nutrients to the root. And ivy burdock, thyme and sage all work to prevent and cleanse DHT while stimulating blood flow.

So, I gave Follicleanse a try. Did it do everything it claimed?

First, I really liked the light green color of the shampoo. It's really pretty, and it smells great, too! I put my hands together to make a lather, and I was a little surprised that the shampoo didn't lather up like a lot of other products. I do like a good lather, so that was a little disappointing.

I washed my hair with the shampoo, and everything seemed pretty normal, nothing special. But when I was done washing, I noticed that my hair didn't seem as oily as it does - it did a good job of getting rid of the dirt and oil from my hair. I also noticed that my scalp was tingling! What a neat feeling! I don't know if it's tingling because my scalp's blood supply was increased by the herbs, but whatever the cause, it's a good feeling.

I don't really know if Follicleanse's claims to improve the health of your hair are true or not, and it's not something I can really evaluate. All I can say is that I really enjoyed using the shampoo!

Would you like to try Follicleanse? You can order it through the Healthy Hair Plus website. It's also available through Amazon.com.  You won't be disappointed!

(I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for more information.)

Chicken Basquaise with Carbonell Spanish Olive Oil (Frugal Food Thursday)

Thanks to Carbonell for providing the olive oil for this recipe!

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

These recipes are also listed at these wonderful linkup parties - thank you to all the hosts for allowing me to link up!

Earlier this week, I made one of my regular dinners, Chicken Basquaise.  But I put a special spin on it - I used Carbonell Spanish Olive Oil!

Much like Spanish wine, Spanish olive oil offers a distinctively different flavor that liberates meat, fish and vegetable dishes from the confines of traditional, expected taste. Carbonell olive oil, since 1866, is only produced and bottled in Spain. Its quality and tradition have made it one of the preferred brands all over the world.  Carbonell Extra Virgin olive oil has an intense flavor that is delicious in salads or as a base for dips, dressings and as a seasoning in many dishes.

The olive oil gave a really authentic and special taste to my ordinary dish!

      Here's how I made it:

First, I sauteed onions, celery, and peppers in the Carbonell olive oil:

I removed the vegetables and placed them in a bowl.  I added more olive oil and sauteed the chicken in the same pan.

Once the chicken was fully cooked, I put the vegetables back in the pan and added a can of crushed tomatoes.  I then added some hot sauce and oregano.  I covered the pan and simmered the dish for about ten minutes.

I stirred in some more olive oil for extra flavor, and then I served the Chicken Basquaise over arborio rice, as shown at the top of this post.

The Carbonell olive oil made this ordinary weekday dish very special!  What dishes that you make would be even better with Carbonell olive oil?

      Here's my recipe:

Plastic Place Trash Bags Review / Giveaway

Thanks to Plastic Place for providing the garbage bags for this review/giveaway!

If you have a household, you'll undoubtedly have garbage.  And you have a need for a place to put it!  So garbage bags are almost definitely on your shopping list from time to time.

In the Frugal Follies household, I try to save money by purchasing garbage bags when they are on sale and when I have coupons.  That combination doesn't come around all that often.   I've also tried purchasing the house brand trash bags, but too often those bags are of low quality, are difficult to open, and often end up ripping - and what's the point of having trash bags that rip?

So here's another cost-saving option for you: purchasing trash bags online.

I recently had the chance to try out two types of garbage bags from Plastic Place:  Harmonyx Drawstring Tall Kitchen Trash Bags and 95 Gallon Black Garbage Bags for outdoor rolling trash cans.

Harmonyx Drawstring Bags come in sets of 25 in a convenient tube dispenser - so they don't take up much storage room.  When you're short on space, this is a great feature!   The bags are three-ply - no rips! - and are two-tone: white on the outside, black on the inside.  They contain Microban, which inhibits the growth of bacteria in your garbage can.  And they're environmentally-friendly, made from 50% recycled material.

I gave these a try in my kitchen trash can, and I thought they were great!  I had no worries about the weight of the garbage breaking the bag as my kids and I took it out on trash day.  They were quick and easy to put in the can as well.  Sometimes it's hard to separate the sides of a cheap trash bag open.  I know I've spent way too long trying to open those cheap bags!  But these were no problem at all.  The drawstrings made it easy to tie up the garbage and put it in the main trash can outside.

And speaking of the outside trash can: Mine lives in my garage, except of course when it's at the curb waiting to be picked up.  Now, my garage gets really, really hot.  I live in South Florida, where the temperature rarely cools off, even at night.  If garbage has been sitting in the can for a few days before it goes outside, the garbage can gets really smelly - and so does the whole garage!  Then, when the garbage is collected, sometimes there are still garbage items at the bottom - and that stuff will sit for another three or four days!

95 Gallon Black Garbage Bags from Plastic Place can help make your outside garage a little less smelly!  These bags will fit your extra-large outdoor rollaway garbage can.  You can put broken glass or other sharp-edged items in your can, and the 2.0-mm thick bag won't puncture.

I gave these bags a try as well.  I have to admit that the extra step of lining the outside garbage can was a bit of a pain.  However, it paid off when the garbage was collected, and there were no extra pieces of trash at the bottom of the can that the garbage collectors had neglected to get.  Yay!  And the can definitely smelled much less than it did without trash can liners.

Overall, I was really happy with the Harmonyx kitchen bags and the trash can liners.  And these bags may be a lot less expensive than the thin, ripping house brand bags you'll find at the store!

Would you like to try these trash bags?  Stop by Plastic Place for these bags and lots of other sizes and styles as well!  Plus, there's free shipping on orders of $50 or more, and only a flat $5 charge for orders below $50.

Or would you like to try them for free?

Frugal Follies is hosting a giveaway for Plastic Place Trash Bags!

One winner will receive one tube (25 bags) of Harmonyx Tall Kitchen Drawstring Bags and 5 95-Gallon Black Garbage Bags.  The giveaway ends on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 11:59 PM Eastern time.  Open to US residents 18 and older.  Use the Rafflecopter form below to enter!
