Tyrrell's Hand-Cooked English Chips Review

Thanks to the folks at Tyrrell's Chips for providing their products for this review!

When I get snacks for my family, I'm always looking for ones that are at least somewhat healthy.  I prefer that they don't have unhealthy oils or unpronounceable ingredients.  But most importantly, they have to be delicious!

So when I heard that Tyrrell's Chips, made with all-natural ingredients and healthy oils, were coming from their native England to be sold in the United States, I had to give them a try!

Tyrrell's Chips are made from potatoes grown from local farmers. The potatoes are thick-sliced with the skins on, hand-fried in small batches, and then coated with a shake of their all-natural seasonings made from top-notch ingredients.  This makes for an amazingly great snack!

I was given seven full-sized bags of their great flavors to try.  I was delighted to see the whimsical packaging of the potato chips!   There are old-time photos on each of them, with a caption contest advertised on the back.  Each bag had a funny slogan as well. They made us smile while we ate the chips, and eating them made us smile even more!

The first we tried was the Lightly Sea Salted variety.  I figured we should try the basic variety before trying other flavors.

But basic they were not!  They were kettle-cooked chips, thick and natural.  They were only lightly salted, so they tasted of potato, not salt.  They had a nice crunch to them. And there were very few broken pieces.  I could have eaten the whole bag right then and there!

The only ingredients in the Lightly Sea Salted chips were potatoes, sunflower oil, and salt.  That's it.  They're gluten-free and vegan-friendly.

But if you'd like just a little more to your chip, the Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper chips are just like the Lightly Sea Salted except for the addition of the black pepper.  It made for a slightly spicier, but still delicious, chip.

The next day, we decided to try out one of the chip flavors.  I picked the one that most appealed to me, the Sweet Chili and Red Pepper chips.

These were my absolute favorite of all the chips.  They tasted like the sriracha sauce you get at Thai restaurants.  They were sweet, yet a little spicy and exotic.  Check out all the spices in these chips:
Ingredients: Potatoes, sunflower oil, sugar, natural flavor, onion powder, salt, tomato powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, parsley, jalapeƱo chili pepper, white pepper, natural color (paprika extract), ginger, star anise, basil, red pepper.
If you can only try one kind of Tyrrell's Chips, I would definitely recommend the Sweet Chili and Red Pepper!

A couple of days later, I invited some friends over to sample the rest of the chips.  I knew I loved them, but I wanted to get other opinions, too!

We all loved the Mature Cheddar & Chives chips.   The cheddar was understated, and the chips weren't overly cheesy.  The chives gave a great bite!

The Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar variety reminded us that we were eating English potato chips!  These would be great with a piece of fried cod.  They definitely had a strong taste of vinegar, so if you're not a fan of sour foods, these wouldn't be for you.  But my youngest daughter loved them.

Another English-flavored chip was the Worcestershire Sauce & Sundried Tomato variety.  These reminded some of the tasters of barbecue-flavor potato chips, but a more refined flavor.  They weren't overly salty or greasy.  Definitely another great-tasting chip!

In a different category of chips were the Veg Chips. Instead of being made from potatoes, these chips are made from beetroot, parsnips, and carrots, with a pinch of sea salt.  We found these chips to be different, yet also delicious!  They were a bit on the sweet side, though.  Still, they would make a very healthy snack for kids!

I loved trying all of the varieties of the Tyrrell's chips.  I can't wait to get them again!

Would you like to try Tyrrell's Chips?  Check their store finder to find them at a store near you.  Or you can purchase them online either as single bags or in packages of 8.

I really loved Tyrrell's Chips, and I know you will, too!

Various and sundry shopping

I ran to three different stores earlier this week to pick up a few things here, a few things there.

I needed bread and cereal - we were out of sale-priced cereal from Publix - so I went to ALDI to get it.  But ALDI isn't carrying certain baking supplies at this time of year, so I went to Walmart to get those items.  And I went to the kosher meat market to buy some ground beef and chicken legs.  Next week, I'll have a great recipe using those chicken legs on Frugal Food Thursday!

Here's the rundown on this shopping:

ALDI:
1 6-ct cinnamon bagels @ $1.69
1 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢
1 cream cheese @ $1.29
1 Crispy Oats cereal @ $1.69
2 instant oatmeal @ $1.49 = $2.98
1 whole wheat bread @ $1.29

Total spent: $9.93

Walmart:
1 molasses @ $2.78
1 Nestle cocoa @ $2.44
1 baking powder @ $1.24

Total spent: $6.46

Kosher Supermarket:
1 family pack chicken drumsticks @ $12.14
1 family pack ground beef @ $18.51

Total spent: $30.65

Black Bean Taco Salad (Frugal Food Thursday)

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

These recipes are also listed at these wonderful linkup parties - thank you to all the hosts for allowing me to link up!

Here's a dinner I make when time is short, but we want to eat healthy - Black Bean Taco Salad!

There's not much to it.  Saute onions and sweet peppers, add some canned chilies and black beans, and throw in some spices.  Serve it over a tossed salad with tortilla strips and shredded cheese.  If you have it, some sour cream is great on the salad, too!

I serve them in large bowls that were originally from a set of pasta bowls.  I don't think I've ever served pasta in them - instead, I use them for meal-sized salads like this one!

If that's not enough of a how-to, here's an actual recipe:

BLACK BEAN TACO SALAD

1 head lettuce, chopped
2 ribs celery, sliced
1 carrot, sliced
16 grape tomatoes, sliced
2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 bell peppers or 8 mini sweet peppers, seeded and chopped
1 4-oz can mild chilies, undrained
1 15-oz can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp hot pepper sauce
4 8" flour tortillas
4 oz shredded cheddar cheese

In a large bowl, mix the lettuce, celery, carrots, and tomatoes.  Toss well.  Divide into four soup or pasta bowls.  Set aside.

Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.  Saute the onion for 2-3 minutes.  Add the pepper and continue to saute for another 2-3 minutes.  Add the chilies, drained black beans, and spices.  Turn the heat to high and bring to a boil.  Lower the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 5-10 minutes.

While the beans simmer, cut each tortilla in half with a pizza cutter, then lay two halves together and cut the halves into 1/4" strips.  Spread the tortilla strips on top of the salads.

Put 1/4 of the bean mixture on top of each salad.  Top the salads with 1 oz of the shredded cheddar cheese.

Makes 4 meal-sized salads.

Halfway through the year! (Wednesday Weekly Shopping)

Coupon Shopping
I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!

Each week, I update my running total for the year, so I know where I am in my quest to keep an $80 weekly grocery budget.  That includes not only food, but toiletries, paper goods, and cleaning supplies.  It doesn't include prescription drugs or eating at restaurants.

The year is now half over - so how am I doing?

Well, I'm a bit over $80 per week - I've averaged $82.75 per week for the first 26 weeks.

That means that if I want to average $80 per week for the whole year, I have to average $77.25 for the next six months!

That will be challenging.  One thing that has driven up my budget lately is my Publix store no longer taking Doris Italian Market coupons as a competitor coupon.  That consistently saved me money each week.  But I've purchased some Enjoy the City books with their $5 off $30 Winn-Dixie coupons, so I'll be able to start using those and saving!

Another thing that has driven up the budget is buying too many treats for my kids - I really need to do better on that!

And lastly, I haven't been great about using up leftovers.  That affects my budget indirectly, but every little bit of saving will help!

Here's what I got this week:

Overall, this week I spent $74.92 for items which retail for $138.55, or a 46% savings based on the retail value of the products at the stores where they were purchased.

For the year (26 weeks), I spent $2,151.57 for items which retailed for $3,690.00 and saved $1,538.43, or a 42% savings. That's an average of $82.75 spent each week for a family of five (husband, wife, and daughters ages 15, 12, and 8), including lots of fresh produce, dairy items, and kosher meat, as well as paper and plastic goods, health and beauty items, and cleaning supplies.

In 2011, I spent $4,017.13 for items which retailed for $7,344.08, saving 45% and spending an average of $77.25 per week for the year.

In 2012, I spent $4,007.13 for items which retailed for $7,591.37, saving 47% and spending an average of $77.06 per week for the year.

How did your shopping go this week? What bargains did you get? Please leave a link to your blog post about your weekly shopping. The aim is not to brag, but to inspire!  Please link up directly to your post, not to the blog itself. I'd appreciate it if you put a link to Wednesday Weekly Shopping in your post as well. If you don't have a blog, please leave a comment!

Summer Splash Fun with Polly Pocket!

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Polly Pocket. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Summer is a great time to be playing at a water park, whether you're an adult, a child, or even a doll!

Mom Central Consulting gave my eight-year-old daughter a chance to try out the new Polly Pocket Zip 'N Splash Playset as well as the Polly Pocket Polly Fashion Collection.  My daughter was so excited to be able to try it out - and she definitely had a lot of fun with it!

On the Zip 'N Splash Playset, Polly and her friends can zip down a zipline - it really works! - and go down a water slide.  She can hang out in a hammock above, or sit in a pool at the bottom.  Sounds like heaven to me!

After we put the playset together (admittedly a little tricky, but we figured it out), she wanted to fill it right up with water.  I was afraid that the water would splash out of the set, so I put it in a 9x13 baking dish.  This let her play to her heart's content while keeping the kitchen table dry.

And play she did!  She played with it all day - really.  I was surprised how well it held her attention! She first used just the toys from the playset - the Polly Pocket doll as well as a puppy and a monkey.  She also made a sign for her water park.  It says:
Mr. Pocket's Amusement Water Park
Weekdays open:
Mon - Thur: 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Fri - Sun: 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM
Later, she brought her other Polly Pocket dolls over to play at the splash park, too!  All of them had a great time playing on the zipline, slide, and hanging out in the pool together.

And at the end, she asked me what I had been expecting all along: "Mom, can we go to a water park, too?"

So we'll be planning that trip soon.

Would your daughter like to play with the Polly Pocket Zip 'N Splash Playset, or any other Polly Pocket toys?

Check out my Polly Pocket store below!  Your daughter will probably love the toys as much as mine did!

Swagbucks is one way I make extra income each day.  I've been a member of Swagbucks since 2010, and so far I've earned almost $700 in Amazon.com gift codes.  I've used those codes to purchase computer supplies, books, and gifts for my nieces and nephews.  (And sometimes I give them away here!)

Swagbucks is a completely free, no strings attached site that rewards you for all of the things you're already doing online. Search, Watching Videos, Playing Games, Taking Surveys, Shopping and more - as you do these activities, you'll earn Swag Bucks, which are reward points that you can redeem for all sorts of gift cards in the Rewards Store. You can download their toolbar or download their OS and Android apps for more opportunities to earn. Choose the activities you like or have time for - how much you earn is up to you!

Each day, I get a Swag Buck just for having the toolbar installed.  When I need to search for something, I use the toolbar, and a couple times during the day I earn Swagbucks - sometimes as few as 6 or as many as 59!  I'll also stop by the Swagbucks website and watch some videos or participate in brand activities to make a few more Swag Bucks.

Each day, my goal is to meet the Swagbucks Daily Goal - anywhere between 50 and 130 Swag Bucks per day.  If you meet the goal, you'll also get bonus Swag Bucks. Some days I make it to the goal, some days I don't.  But I try to meet the goal each day.

When I have 450 Swag Bucks, I can go to the Rewards Store and order a $5 Amazon.com gift code.  A few days later, I have the code in my account!

Publix: Great deals on condiments and treats

This is a great time of year to get deals on condiments!  People are buying sauces and spreads for their summer barbecues, so the manufacturers put those products on sale at this time.  Stock up now for the year, because many of these items won't be on sale again until next year!

It's also a great time to get treats like ice cream and cookies, since the manufacturers know that the kids are home and are asking to eat them.  (Do they have a camera pointed at my house?)  I'd recommend stocking up only if you have the ability to say no!  Otherwise, you'll end up consuming way too much of these fat- and sugar-laden treats.

Here's what I got at Publix this week:

2 Pepperidge Farm Garlic or Cheese Texas Toast @ BOGO $2.89
- 2 $0.50/1 Pepperidge Farm frozen bread printable (zip 99218)
=  $1.89 for two, or 95¢ each

2 Kraft barbecue sauce @ BOGO $1.85
- $1.00 off any TWO (2) KRAFT Barbecue Sauce
= 85¢ for two, or 43¢ each

2 A.1. steak sauce @ BOGO $4.29
- 2 $1.00 off any ONE (1) A.1. Steak Sauce
= $2.29 for two, or $1.15 each

2 Capri Sun @ $2.00 = $4.00
- $1.00 off two CAPRI SUN or ROARING WATERS Drinks
= $3.00 for two, or $1.50 each

2 Nestle Toll House cookie dough @ BOGO $3.49
- $1.25/2 Nestle Toll House Refrigerated Cookie Dough printable
=  $2.24 for two, or $1.12 each

2 Ronzoni Garden Delights pasta @ BOGO $1.49
- $1/2 Ronzoni Garden Delight, exp. 7/13/13 (SS 06/02/13) or $1/2 Ronzoni Garden Delight printable
= 49¢ for two, or 25¢ each

2 Breyer's ice cream @ BOGO $4.99
- $1.50/2 Breyer's Ice Cream or Frozen Dairy Dessert Target printable
= $3.49 for two, or $1.75 each

2 Monterey gourmet pesto @ BOGO $4.49
= $2.25 each

Tax: 24¢
Total spent: $18.98

ALDI: So easy to overspend

It's so easy to overspend at ALDI, because the prices are so great!

This week, I throttled back a little, and only got items that I really, really needed.  Just the basics.  Dairy, produce, baking supplies, that sort of thing.

Okay, except for one thing.  I found boxes of Apple Rounds - the ALDI version of Apple Jacks - on sale for $1.29.  I decided to pick one up as a treat for my youngest daughter, who is always complaining that we don't get sugared cereals.  Okay, we got one box.  Stop complaining now!

Here's what I got:

Trip 1:

2 gallons milk @ $3.39 = $6.78
2 dozen eggs @ $1.49 = $2.98
1 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢
2 cream cheese @ $1.29 = $2.58
1 16-oz shredded cheddar @ $3.29
1 margarine @ 75¢
1 whole wheat bread @ $1.29
1 baking soda @ 49¢
1 refried beans @ 79¢
1 grape tomatoes @ $1.29
2.01 lb bananas @ 44¢/lb = 88¢

Total spent: $22.11

Trip 2:
1 whole wheat bread @ $1.29
1 plain bagels @ $1.69
1 sweet onions @ $1.69
1 family pack tortillas @ $1.99
1 2-lb red grapes @ $1.98
1 3-lb red delicious apples @ $3.59
1 blueberries @ $1.49
1 strawberries @ $1.29
1 Apple Rounds @ $1.29
1 gallon milk @ $3.39

Publix: On sale too soon

I really hate it when there's a great deal on a grocery item that uses coupons from the previous Sunday's newspaper.  On Sundays I only get one copy of my local newspaper, and thus I have only one set of the coupons. If there's a great deal that needs two copies of a coupon, I can't get it.

But the next Sunday, I pick up a bunch of free coupon inserts from a free newspaper that's distributed in my area.  So I can get as many of the great deals as I want!

That happened this week.  There was a great deal on Buitoni refrigerated pasta during the deal week that started on June 13th which used a coupon from the June 9th newspaper.  Since the deal needed 2 coupons to get the best price, I couldn't get it.

Luckily, the needed coupon was in my free coupon inserts that I picked up on June 16th!  (Sometimes the best coupons aren't in them.)  So I was able to go back before the end of the sales week to get the deal!  Yay!

(As a note, sometimes a relative buys a Sunday newspaper and gives me the coupons that they don't want.  So sometimes I get two copies of the Sunday coupons eventually, but sometimes not.)

Here's what I got on this trip:

4 Scotties tissue @ 2/$1.25 = $2.50
- 2 $1/2 Scotties tissue printable (zip 12345)
= 50¢ for four, or 13¢ each

2 Chips Ahoy @ BOGO $3.65
-  $0.75/2 Nabisco Cookie or Cracker Product, exp. 7/14/13 (SS 05/19/13 R)
= $2.90 for two, or $1.45 each

2 Polaner All-Fruit with Fiber preserves @ $2.19 = $4.38
- $1/2 Polaner Products printable
= $3.38 for two, or $1.69 each

4 Buitoni Riserva pasta @ BOGO $4.49 = $8.98
- 4 $1/1 Buitoni Refrigerated Pasta or Sauce, exp. 9/9/13 (SS 06/09/13)
= $4.98 for four, or $1.25 each

2 Klondike ice cream sandwiches @ BOGO $3.99
- $2/2 Unilever Frozen Ice Cream Novelties (Publix Best Meals printable)
= $1.99 for two, or $1.00 each
