Spelling Bee Knaidel

One of my favorite days of the year is the day of the National Spelling Bee. I love to watch it each year on ESPN and play alongside the kids as they spell words, many of which I've never heard.  But sometimes I get them right!

And another thing I love is to cook from scratch, especially the traditional recipes from my grandmother and great-grandmother.  I have a recipe book made by my mom that has many of these recipes.  It's like going on a trip back in time when I cook one of their dishes.

So I was really excited to see both these interests come together when 13-year-old Arvind Mahankali, from Bayside, New York - just a few miles away from where my grandparents lived! - spelled the word "knaidel" to win the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

I love knaidel - it's a Yiddish dumpling.  While it can be made from many different ingredients, such as potatoes or nuts, the best known knaidel is the matzah ball.

So soon I'll be making my grandmother's recipe of knaidlach (the plural of knaidel) to celebrate the winning word of the spelling bee!

Here's the recipe:

SPELLING BEE KNAIDEL

4 eggs
1/4 cup oil
1 tsp salt
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
1-1/4 cup matzah meal
2 tbsp chicken broth or water

In a medium mixing bowl, beat the eggs. Add the oil, salt, and pepper, and mix until thoroughly combined.  Add the matzah meal and mix until the matzah meal is moistened.  Add the water and mix again.  Put the bowl in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Boil 8 cups of water in a large pot, adding salt to taste.  Remove the matzah meal mixture.  Scoop out a heaping tablespoon of the mixture and form it into a ball with your hands.  Place the rolled balls on a plate.  Continue until all of the mixture has been used, about 12-16 balls.  Place matzah balls into the boiling water with a slotted spoon.  Once all the matzah balls are in the pot, cover and turn down to low.  Allow the matzah balls to simmer gently for 30-40 minutes.

Remove matzah balls with a slotted spoon and place in heated chicken soup.  Serve 2-3 matzah balls per serving of soup.

Title loans - good idea?

Thanks to eTitle Loan for providing the information for this post!

Is a car title loan for you?

A car title loan is a loan where the title of your car is used as collateral.  Because the car serves as collateral, the loan can be larger and at a lower interest rate than an unsecured loan such as a credit card or a payday loan.

It is also easier to qualify for a car title loan than other kinds of loan such as a car loan or a home mortgage.  For instance, your credit score generally is not taken into consideration when making a car title loan.  So if you have bad credit and need a loan, a title loan may be right for you.  As long as you have some sort of income, such as a job, child support, or unemployment payments, you will most likely be approved for the loan.

On the down side, if you don't pay the loan, you will lose your car - even if you're already made several payments toward your loan.  If you need the car to get to work, it could have an impact on your employment as well.

If you're unable to create an emergency fund or have already spent all of it due to an ongoing emergency, and if you can't qualify for a loan due to bad credit, a title loan is a solution that will give you the money to pay the necessary bills.

If you take out Fast Loans in Miami FL or from anywhere else, definitely make sure that you have as low an interest rate as possible, and pay off the loan as fast as you possibly can.  Sell some items and work extra hours, anything to get the loan paid off and the car title back in your hands.

Happy first blogiversary to my friend Amy over at Confessions of a Messy Mama!

To celebrate, she's giving away a prize package for moms of babies - the prize package is worth over $650!  See below for a list of all the amazing prizes in this prize package.

Enter on the Rafflecopter and be sure to wish Amy a happy blogiversary!

 photo AmyBlogBdayButton_zps8f844c55.jpg

Bobee Diaper and Wipes Dispenser is an must have for any parent of an infant.  The Messy House was lucky enough to get the diaper stacker to review.  You know that this messy place needs all the help as it can get with clutter.  It did an amazing job and helps me to stay organized, at least in the changing station.  If only the Bobee made something to get the rest of my life organized!   The winner will receive the below predecorated Bobee and wall decals!  The decals are removable, so if you aren't thrilled about this particular design, then you can make your own!

Glow Bug Cloth Diaper will be giving the winner their choice of boy, girl or neutral print diaper!  I was able to review two Glow Bug Cloth Diapers.  One from the 2012 line and one from the 2013 line. I've never had a leak using these diapers and they are so cute.  My favorite feature of this particular diaper is the double Gussets!  I love how affordable they are also, you purchase the system, not the individual diaper.  One system comes with 12 one-size pocket diapers with snaps in a free wet bag and 18 absorbent snap-in inserts.  They are made with NEW SlimDry fabric fro the trimmest fit.

Simple Addiction is a an online store that has a variety of boutique items offered at discounted prices.  "Who said you couldn’t save money while spending money?" is Simple Addiction's view.   All items are 50 - 80% off retail prices.  Simple Addiction offers the items for 36 hours to keep their inventory fresh.   I loved the products that I received and all the products that I see on there.  There are different products everyday!  Simple Addiction is giving the winner a $50 gift certificate to pick out what ever they want!

Wittlebee sent a box for my 4 year old and me to review.  If you don’t know what Wittlebee is, it’s a monthly service that delivers clothing for your children from birth to 6 years old.  The box was sent out to my door within a couple of days.  I was shocked at how quickly it arrived.   If you visit Wittlebee's website it states that you will receive over $100 worth of retail in every box.  The service is $39.99 a month.  There are lots of different monthly subscription boxes out there.  You can choose from baby products to pet products and everything in between.  What busy mama doesn't need this service?  Wittlebee is giving the winner one box, winner's choice of gender and size!

Manna Organics, LLC is a family owned and operated bakery. All our products are vegan, kosher, organic and carefully hand-made. Our signature product is the fully sprouted MANNA BREAD®, cake-like, free of salt, no oils, no sweeteners, no leavening agents. Manna bread is moist and delicious, high in protein and fiber. Sold in the USA and Canada, in the Frozen Foods section."  I was sent the Millet RiceCinnamon DateFig, Fennel and Flax (a new flavor); and Gluten Free Open Sesame to review.  Winner will receive four  loaves of Manna Bread.

Burp'n Baby sent me one of the softest baby blankets I have ever touched to review.  Not only was it solf but it was super cute too.  I like that Burp’nBaby is committed to maintaining its Made in the USA status.   Burp'nBaby doesn't just offer blankets.  They have a variety of soft baby gifts.  They are giving the winner the blanket below, it's so cute and with perfect colors for summer.

Smoobee Magic No Cry Brush is giving the lucky winner a Smoobe Magic No Cry Brush!  The first thing I did when I received the brush to review was inspect it myself, looking for some magic pixie dust sprinkled on it or something.  Smoobee is a dual hairbrush, it's a natural bristle brush and a cushioned pad hairbrush in one.   It is very well made and you can tell that the makers of Smoobee take pride in their work, but I still didn't see any magic dust.  Smoobee worked like a charm with both my older girls, there is no fighting in the morning to brush hair anymore!

Sage Spoonfuls sent me a copy of the award-winning book Sage Spoonfuls-Simple Recipes, Healthy Meals, Happy Babies, written by Liza Huber to review.  I completely expect a regular good old fashioned recipe book.  You know, with a bunch of measurered out recipes.  This isn't some regular recipe book.  This is like the encylopedia of baby food.  Sage Spoonfuls is giving the winner a Let's Get Started Package ($99)!  I am super jealous over this one!  I do love my Simple Recipes, Healthy Meals, Happy Babies but this is a great package that the winner is getting!

This packages includes:

"Sage Spoonfuls-Simple Recipes, Healthy Meals, Happy Babies" by Liza Huber Winner of the 2012 Mom's Best Literary Gold Award!
Immersion Blender and Food Processor  puree 2 week's worth of baby food in just seconds!
12 BPA-free 4 oz Storage Jars with 60 Labels  make and store your baby's food in large batches and easily take it on-the-go. Made in the USA!
2 Stackable Storage Trays – keeps your fresh baby food organized and easily accessable. Made in the USA!
1 Pocket Nutrition Guide  learn about age-appropriate foods, foods to avoid, organics, infant CPR and more.

When Melissa & Doug asked me which product I'd like to review it took me forever to decide.  Melissa and Doug is known for the quality of their products and how their products foster imagination in our children.  I chose the Deluxe Puppet Theater to review and three hand puppets!  My girls play with this almost every single day!  They have received other Melissa & Doug toys as gifts and enjoy each one of them immensely.   Melissa & Doug is giving the winner $50 in toys of the winner's choice!

The Mixie Bottle is another must have for any parent of an infant who is takes a bottle.  I wish I would have received this much sooner, I reviewed the Mixie Bottle just before FB's first birthday.  Basically you have a bottle with an inner compartment. Inside this compartment you put your formula. You put the entire bottle together, fill with water and you have yourself a bottle ready to go. All you have to do is push a button and viola - the formula mixes with the water, and you have a ready to feed bottle.  The winner will receive one 4 oz Mixie Bottle (rv $18.95).

aden + anais® is providing the winner with mum + bub™ hair and body wash and ultra-gentle lotion ($31.90).   The bottle states:  "Tested on Raegan, her girls and the growing aden + anais® family. Not tested on animals."  This statement provides me with the security that the makers of this product believe in it enough to use it their family.  I definitely recommend the mum + bub™ skin care line by aden + anais® .  I love the fact that it's made for the whole family, well who am I kidding, Mr. Messy would never use it.  I like that I can take a shower with my baby and not have to use a bunch of different products.

Painted Earth, Cosmetics from Nature has become my new obsession after reviewing several of their products.  I was super excited to hear that Painted Earth would be giving the winner my favorite products!  Winner will get the Vitamin C Serum, Blueberry Cranberry Oxygen Scrub, Boo Boo Gel and Victorian Charm Mint Lip Gloss (RV $134.50).  I can't, well I can because my skin is now amazing, but I won't go a day without the Vitamin C Serum, the tone of my skin is so even when I use this serum and my skin is brighter!  Trust me when I tell you that you want to win this set!  My girls love the Boo Boo Gel and the Mint Lip Gloss will give you a little boost when you need it.  I love how soft my skin feels after using the Blueberry Cranberry Oxygen Scrub!

Lässig has so many diaper bags that are stylish!  I strongly suggest that you take the time to look at Lässig and find the right bag for your style.  Especially if you have been unsuccessful in the past and combining your style with your baby.  It's really hard to be a fashionable woman while still being a great mom, Lässig makes it a little easier for us.  I was able to review the  Brief Snake bag in Beige and carry it all the time!  My friends without children have made comments about borrowing it.   Winner will receive the Lassig Glam Banana Diaper Bag (rv $119).

Winner must be a resident of the U.S.A. and 18+

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

These recipes are also listed at these wonderful linkup parties - thank you to all the hosts for allowing me to link up!

I love to bake - maybe a little too much.

I generally do some baking for treats for my kids' lunchbags during the weekend.  I usually make brownies or sugar cookies, as those are the easiest to make and don't need any special ingredients.

But when I have a bag of chocolate chips, I love to make these chocolate chip blondies!

Cheap magazine subscriptions

Thanks to Subscription Addiction for providing the information for this post!

When I needed to cut back on expenses, one of the first things to go were magazines.  They were low-hanging fruit: they're an ongoing expense that is clearly a want, not a need.  The articles, while interesting and entertaining, generally aren't important to my life.  And any information I find in magazines, I can probably find online or at the library.

Yet, I still enjoy reading magazines!  When you only have a few minutes to read, it's tough to get started reading a book, only to put it down again.  The magazine format is great to fill those extra minutes here and there while you're waiting for something.  You can bring them anywhere and don't have to worry about finding wi-fi.  And the light, breezy articles are great for reading when you don't really want to activate your brain.

So though I've cut some magazine subscriptions, I'm always on the lookout for getting them inexpensively.  I often find free subscription deals, which I publish here for all of you on Frugal Follies.  For instance, right now I'm receiving one-year subscriptions of Family Fun, Allrecipes, and Better Homes and Gardens - all of which I got for free.

If you're looking for a specific magazine, though, it's easier to find an inexpensive deal than waiting around for months and months, hoping to find a free deal.  One great source of inexpensive magazines that I recently discovered is Subscription Addiction.

Subscription Addiction is a great source for low-cost magazine subscriptions.  For instance, right now they have lots of major magazines for 40%, 50% or even 76% off!  I saw a Good Housekeeping subscription for only $10 - what a great deal!

And even better are Subscription Addiction's subscription packages.  You can get three subscriptions of selected titles for only $30, and four subscription for only $35.  The latter deal means you'll get each subscription for under $9 each.  Wow!

And even better - you can use the code mom15per to save an additional 15% off.  That means your four subscriptions will be only $29.75, or around $7.50 each.  That's a great deal!

So if you've cut out magazine subscriptions in your quest to be more frugal, you don't need to get rid of them completely.   Check out Subscription Addiction!

Publix: My children's favorites!

It's a yucky, rainy day here in usually beautiful, sunny South Florida, but I braved the heavy showers to head out to Publix once more before the sales week was up!

I got some good deals on ice cream and Cheerios - two of my kids' favorite things to eat!

On my last trip, I was only able to buy two containers of Ben & Jerry's, as I only had one $1/1 Ben & Jerry's Frozen Yogurt or Ice Creams, exp. 6/16/13 (RP 05/19/13) coupon, which I combined with a Publix manufacturer's e-coupon.  But on Sunday I got my free coupon inserts for 5/19, so I was able to get six more containers for only $1.00 each.  Great, yummy deal!

And last week, I bought four boxes of MultiGrain Cheerios.  We only have one left, believe it or not.  So I wanted to get more, but I was out of prints of the $0.75 off ONE BOX Multi Grain Cheerios cereal coupon.  So instead, I saved a little less and used the $0.50 off ONE BOX Original Cheerios cereal coupon to get two boxes of Original Cheerios for $1.49 each.

The whole trip ended costing me nothing out of pocket, as I used a Publix gift card that I had received for running a Publix gift card giveaway.  But I'm still counting the full amount here for my budgeting.

Here are the details of these deals:

2 Original Cheerios @ $1.99 = $3.98
- 2 $0.50 off ONE BOX Original Cheerios cereal
= $2.98 for two, or $1.49 each

6 Ben & Jerry's ice cream @ BOGO $3.99  = $11.97
- 6 $1/1 Ben & Jerry's Frozen Yogurt or Ice Creams, exp. 6/16/13 (RP 05/19/13)
= $5.97 for six, or $1.00 each

Tax: 72¢
Total out of pocket:  $9.67
Total saved compared to Publix full prices: $22.17

ALDI: Great price on crackers

One thing that I love about ALDI is that some items are even cheaper there than if you bought the name brand at Publix on sale and with coupons.

For instance, take crackers.  The thin wheat kind (similar to Wheat Thins) are $1.39 per box and the woven wheat kind (similar to Triscuits) are $1.25 per box at my store.  The same-sized name brand at Publix costs $3.69.  If it went on a BOGO sale, that would be two boxes for $3.69, or $1.85 per box.

The current best coupon right now for those products is the $0.75/2 Nabisco Cookie or Cracker Product, exp. 7/14/13 (SS 05/19/13 R) coupon.  So subtracting that, you'd get two boxes for $2.94, or $1.47 per box.

So the ALDI price is even better! And because of that, I picked up two boxes of crackers along with the rest of my groceries.  My kids love to snack on cheese and crackers.

Here's what I got:

2 gallons milk @ $3.39 = $6.78
2 apple juice concentrate @ 99¢ = $1.98
1 16-oz shredded cheddar @ $3.29
1 8-oz cheddar block @ $1.79
2 cream cheese @ $1.19 = $2.38
2 blueberries @ $1.69 = $3.38
1 Romaine hearts @ $1.99
1.77 lb bananas @ 44¢/lb = 78¢
1 thin wheat crackers @ $1.39
1 instant oatmeal @ $1.49
1 fruit snack bar @ $1.89
1 woven wheat crackers @ $1.25
2 whole wheat bread @ $1.29 = $2.58

Total spent: $30.97

Mrs. Renfro's Gourmet Salsa Giveaway

I grew up not eating anything spicy, because my parents didn't like spicy food. When I was a teenager, my older sister invited me to go out with her and her friend to a Mexican restaurant, and there I tasted salsa for the first time.

I was hooked! (Of course, the tortilla chips helped!) Since then, I've loved all spicy foods, and salsa in particular.

If you love salsa, enter this giveaway for 4 jars of Mrs. Renfro's salsa!

Frugal Follies is pleased to join Tammie's Reviews, Giveaways and More in offering you this awesome giveaway sponsored by Mrs. Renfro's Gourmet Salsas.

You can read Tammie's product review here.
