Here at the Frugal Follies household, we've been trying to cut back on carbohydrate foods. That's really a challenge when you're trying to save money as well!

A few nights ago, I made a tossed salad with leftover chicken, but it didn't seem like enough for a dinner. I remembered that I had homemade chicken stock in the fridge, which I had made a few days earlier. I combined the stock with canned tomatoes and kidney beans, vegetables, and just a small amount of veggie macaroni to make a yummy, quick minestrone soup!

Publix: Saving money is my Mott-o!

This week at Publix, I was really excited about the great deal on Mott's apple juice! After the BOGO sale and coupons, each bottle was only 44 cents! I bought four for now, but will probably get more once I straighten up my pantry and make room for more bottles.

All together, I was able to get everything pictured above for under $20 and saved 77%! Great week!

I also discovered Hopster coupons - have you tried them? They are printable coupons, and you can increase the value of the coupons by following participating companies on social media sites or doing small tasks. One downside is that you can only print each coupon once. I was able to increase a coupon for Fab from $1.00 off to $2.00 off!

Here's what I got:

Orkin Ecologist site - time to #BugOut!

I do! It's the fear of cockroaches. Oh, how I hate finding one in my house!

Generally, we don't have a lot of insects in the house - as we live in bug-filled South Florida, having an exterminator visit every other month is pretty much a requirement for me. But the bugs still manage to get it, and when I see something big and black moving out of the corner of my eye - oh, that is such a terrible feeling!

My oldest daughter doesn't have katsaridaphobia, though - if she finds a cockroach or other large bug in the house, she'll get a napkin, let the bug crawl on, then take it outside and release it on the lawn. That's not my technique. Mine involves a large shoe and a tissue.

I learned that the fear of cockroaches is called katsaridaphobia from an interesting article that I read about the top 10 bug phobias. Check it out! You'll learn the fancy names of quite a few bug phobias - the names are what I find the most interesting, since they are derived from Greek. You'll probably find some phobias that you hadn't considered before!

I found this article on the Orkin Ecologist site. At Orkin, controlling bugs is their job, so it's really important that they be knowledgeable about bugs. They've been studying bugs for over 100 years - not just to know how to get rid of them, but also because bugs are just so interesting! The site is a great educational science resource for both novices and experts. Whether you want to learn about their bug of the month, get the latest bug news, or learn how to share their information with others, the Orkin Ecologist site will really help you!

$500 Kmart Gift Card Giveaway

It’s Halloween Giveaway Event

Here's a favorite pumpkin recipe for Halloween - Pumpkin Whole Wheat Rolls. Slather them with some apple butter or jelly for a quick Halloween dinner before trick-or-treating!

PUMPKIN WHOLE WHEAT BREAD MACHINE ROLLS

3/4 cup warm water
4 tbsp butter, melted
1/2 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling!)
1/3 cup honey
1 tsp salt
1-1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1-1/2 cup all-purpose flour
4 tsp vital wheat gluten
1 tbsp yeast

Add the ingredients to the bread machine in the order shown or in the order described by your bread machine's manual. Set on the dough cycle.

When the dough cycle finishes, remove the dough to a floured surface. Knead the dough for 1 minute. Separate the dough into 16 pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Place the dough balls in a 4x4 pattern in a greased 8x8 pan. Cover the pan with a dishtowel and allow the dough to rise for 1 hour in a warm area.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 15 minutes, then cover the rolls with aluminum foil to prevent overbrowning and bake for another 5-10 minutes. Allow to cool, then remove rolls and break them apart.

Makes 16 rolls.
