This week's shopping reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite books, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

“Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the Universe than we do now.”
― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

This was another one of those oh no, not again weeks. I purchased meat this week, which cost somewhere around $50. Of course, I didn't take a picture and I lost the receipt. Oh no, not again. So I'm guessing I spent $49. It probably was a little less than that, but better to estimate too much than not enough.

Then, the Publix ad ended up being really great, so I got a lot of stuff. Probably too much.  In retrospect, the free Pantene deal wasn't a good enough deal to get.  Same with the Finish detergent.  And the Sea Cuisine tilapia was really an indulgence.  If I had to do it again I wouldn't get any of those so-called deals, which would have saved me $25 off the total this week.

Not only did I go over my budget of $80 for the week, I went over an $80 average for the year.  Ugh.

So let's hope I learn from all this!

Here's what I got this week:

And, I got $49 worth of kosher beef and chicken, and two packages of tortillas at Walmart for $2.16.

Overall, this week I spent $141.46 for items which retail for $224.89, or a 37% savings based on the retail value of the products at the stores where they were purchased.

For the year (24 weeks), I spent $1,970.86 for items which retailed for $3,370.77 and saved $1,399.91, or a 42% savings. That's an average of $82.11 spent each week for a family of five (husband, wife, and daughters ages 15, 12, and 8), including lots of fresh produce, dairy items, and kosher meat, as well as paper and plastic goods, health and beauty items, and cleaning supplies.

In 2011, I spent $4,017.13 for items which retailed for $7,344.08, saving 45% and spending an average of $77.25 per week for the year.

In 2012, I spent $4,007.13 for items which retailed for $7,591.37, saving 47% and spending an average of $77.06 per week for the year.

You are way better at it than me. We spend probably $500-600 a month for a family of six. We do one big month haul at the first of the month spending $360 that I budget for upfront, and purchase things like milk, fresh fruit/veggies as we have to later on. Yesterday thanks to Harris Teeters buy 2 get 3 free sale, I was able to get $299 worth of groceries for $141. Not the huge savings you get, but I was so proud :D
