CVS: Save with Suave

After going to Walgreens and forgetting my coupons, I headed back home to pick them up and then out again to CVS.  This week, I wanted to take advantage of the Suave deal: Buy $12 in participating products, receive $4 in Extra Care Bucks.

And my deal was made even sweeter when at the coupon printing machine near the front door, I received a CVS store coupon for $2 off two bottles of body wash!  Be sure to run your CVS card through the coupon station to see if you get this coupon, too!

Walgreens: The most important coupon tip you'll ever learn

When you start couponing, there are lots of important coupon tips to learn - how to find coupons, how to keep them organized, how to combine store and manufacturer's coupons to save more, how to use coupons to get overages which can be used to purchase items without coupons.  But here is the most important coupon tip you'll ever learn:

Bring your coupons to the store!

I didn't follow this tip for my Walgreens trip.  Oops!

But I remembered that eggs and cream cheese were on sale for 99¢ each - cheaper than at ALDI, where eggs are $1.29 a dozen and cream cheese is $1.19 per 8-ounce brick.  So I bought some of each.  I'll make another trip to Walgreens later this week to buy my coupon items as well as more eggs and cream cheese.

Publix: The problem with shopping early

I shop at Publix on the morning of the first day of the sale week (for me, that's Thursday), so that I can blog about the great deals and share them with you!

But there's a problem with that - my store doesn't always have the signage up for the week's sales, so sometimes I make a mistake.

This week, I picked up 6 12 oz jars of Smucker's jam, which I thought were 50% off.  When I got to the register, they rang up at full price.  Turns out only the 18 oz jars were 50% off.  Luckily I caught the error, asked them to void those purchases, and quickly went to the jam aisle and got 6 of the right size.

Here's what I got this week:

ALDI: Big totals

During the school year, I rarely spent more than $20 or $25 at ALDI.  But since I've simplified my shopping (just picking up deals at Publix, CVS, and Walgreens, and then buying the rest at ALDI) (yes, that's my idea of simplification), I'm spending half my budget at ALDI.  It's strange to get used to taking that much money out of my wallet.  But school starts in a few weeks, so I'll be back to hitting several stores a week to get the best deals.

Here's what I got at ALDI this week:

Simple Pleasures-Filled Cookies (Frugal Food Thursday)

simple pleasures

Welcome to everyone visiting from the Hershey's Facebook page!  Check out all of my easy, cheap recipes and money-saving tips!  And don't miss another recipe, coupon, or deal - follow on Twitter or Facebook, or subscribe to the Frugal Follies email newsletter or to the RSS feed

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

There's a great deal going on right now at CVS for Hershey's Simple Pleasures chocolates. These are chocolates with a creamy filling - I chose the dark chocolate with chocolate filling. Here's the deal:

2 Hershey's Simple Pleasures @ $3.00 = $6.00 (receive $2 Extra Care Bucks good on your next visit)
- 2 $1/1 Hershey's Simple Pleasures printable
= $4.00 for two, or $2.00 each ($1.00 each after ECBs)

Having heard recently about a chocolate chip cookie that had an Oreo cookie in the middle, I thought it would be fun to make a cookie with a Simple Pleasures candy in the middle!   I used a standard sugar cookie dough to surround the candy.  After baking, it had melted just a little, and it was delicious!

Drugstore craziness (Wednesday Weekly Shopping)

Coupon Shopping
I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!

This week, I went a little crazy at the drug stores.  After several weeks of just picking up a couple of items, both Walgreens and CVS had several good deals.  But I was low on Extra Care Bucks from CVS and Register Rewards from Walgreens, so I ended up spending over $15 at each store out of pocket.  Which put me over budget this week.  Ack!

Winn-Dixie $25 gift card giveaway

I used to do a lot of shopping at Winn-Dixie, but not so much lately.  Recently, I looked at Winn-Dixie's programs, and now I'm wondering why I don't go there more often.

There's the fuelperks! programs, where you can save 5¢ per gallon for every $50 you spend at Winn-Dixie.  And you can earn cents off each gallon of gas when you buy items shown in the weekly ad.  This is an easy way to save on gas!

There's also the Make-A-Meal deals.  When you buy one specified product, you can get up to four other products for free, creating a complete meal.  I love when the meal is breakfast and milk and orange juice are two of the free items.  I have to buy those items anyway, so it's great to get them for free.

And, of course, there are the BOGO deals!  I love to buy one item and get the second for free, particularly when I have two coupons for the items.

And right now, Box Tops for Education is teaming up with Winn-Dixie's fuelperks! program for a great way to save and help you child's school!  Here's the details:
  • When you buy 5 participating Box Tops items at Winn Dixie, save 10 cents per gallon on gas AND get 20 Bonus Box Tops.
  • Find great savings on Box Tops products including Big G cereal, Betty Crocker Fruit Flavored Snacks, Pillsbury Crescent Rolls, and many other great products.
  • Check out www.boxtops4education.com to find out more about the Box Tops for Education program and how you can help support your local school.
To celebrate this new program, Winn-Dixie has provided Frugal Follies with a $25 Winn-Dixie gift card to give away to one lucky reader!

To enter, use the Rafflecopter below! This giveaway is open to US residents 18 and older.  This giveaway ends on Friday, August 10, 2012, at 12:01 am.  A winner will be chosen randomly soon after the end of the giveaway.  The winner will be contacted by email, and the winner must respond within 72 hours.  If the winner does not respond, that person will be ruled ineligible and another winner will be chosen.  This giveaway is in no way associated with Facebook.

CVS: Forgot to give the coupons!

I went to CVS earlier today, picked out my items, and paid.  The total seemed pretty high, and I was trying to figure out why.  Then I realized - I was still holding the coupons in my hand!  D'oh!

I apologized to the cashier and handed her the coupons.  She simply totaled up the coupons and gave me the cash back.  It was that simple.  I was afraid she'd have to void the transaction and rering everything up, but she didn't.  Whew!  I'm sure the people behind me in line were relieved as well.

Today's customer service score: CVS 1, Walgreens 0.

Walgreens: What if your Register Rewards doesn't print?

I stopped by Walgreens after a big rainstorm.  I picked out my items, brought them to the register, and paid for them.  But as I left, something was bothering me... but what?

After I had left the parking lot, it dawned on me: I was supposed to get a $1 Register Rewards after purchasing two Post cereals, but it hadn't printed.  I debated whether I should go back - was it worth my time?  I decided to go back to let them know about the mistake.

I went back in with my receipt and talked to the cashier.  She first questioned whether the deal would get a RR (I showed it to her in the ad, and said that there was a sign on the shelf).  Then she wanted to see that I had bought the item.  Um, it's on the receipt?  And I was just there five minutes earlier?  But I went back out and got the two boxes of cereal.

She then sent me to a manager (probably should have done this in the first place).  The manager got two other boxes of a different kind of Post cereal, returned my boxes, "sold" the other boxes, and poof, the Register Reward printed out.  I asked her to make sure that this wouldn't happen to any other customer... but somehow I doubt she did anything.

So if you shop at my Walgreens and didn't get your Register Rewards, I tried to fix it, sorry!

Here's what I got this week at Walgreens:

Publix: Watch those size restrictions!

There's nothing more disappointing than finding a coupon for an item that's on sale, only to discover that the size of the product on sale and the size of the product described in the coupon are not a match.

That's what happened to me today at Publix.  I had planned on purchasing 8 boxes of Kellogg's Crunchy Nut cereal, and I would use 4 $1.00 off any 2 Kellogg's Cereals coupons.  But the sale was for products from 13-14.1 ounces, but the coupon specified that the product had to be larger than 14.7 oz.  Grr!

But it ended up working out when I found peelie coupons on some of the Crunchy Nut boxes.  I found two coupons for 70¢ off one box, and one coupon for $3.00 off milk when you purchase 3 Kellogg's cereals.

Another frustrating problem - Smart Balance product were on a buy one, get one free sale, and I had two coupons for $1.60 off when you buy any one Smart Balance® Spreadable Butter.  (Watch the video to increase the value of the coupon from the original $1.10.)  But my store didn't carry the product.  I'm not even sure that particular product was on sale.

I was happy to see Philadelphia Indulgence on sale this week, and I used four 75¢ off Philadelphia Indulgence coupons to save.  My kids love to spread this chocolate cream cheese on my homemade challah.  I bet it would go good on my coconut oil whole wheat bread, too.

Here's what I got this week:

ALDI: Simplified shopping

This summer, I'm keeping my shopping simple.  Or rather, simple for me.  Instead of hitting several different stores to get the best deals, I'm limiting my shopping to Publix for the deals, the drug stores on the weekend, and otherwise picking up what I need at ALDI.

I may not be saving the absolute maximum, but I know that I'm getting a good price there.  And that makes my summer a whole lot less complicated.

Here's what I got at ALDI:

Coconut Oil Whole Wheat Bread (Frugal Food Thursday)

whole wheat bread

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

I've been wanting to make my own sandwich bread for a while.  I already make bread - each week I make challah and whole wheat pizza dough, but I usually buy whole wheat bread for sandwiches.

Earlier this week, I was out of bread, so I decided to try making my own.  I wanted to find a recipe that was for whole wheat bread and used ingredients that I already had at home.  The recipe I wanted to find would also have you make the dough in a breadmaker, then remove and bake in the oven.

I found a recipe that met these criteria in a post from Feel Good About Dinner, which was a guest post from Brigette Shevy.  This recipe used coconut oil, which I had in my cupboard after trying it out for a review and giveaway.  I was a little concerned about using coconut oil in bread, since my husband doesn't care for coconut.

The bread was incredibly easy to make and turned out delicious, and not coconut-flavored at all.  But it didn't rise as high as I would have liked for sandwich bread. That might be because I used a mix of whole wheat flour and all-purpose flour; perhaps I should have used bread flour, which I didn't have in my pantry. It was still great to eat while still oven-warm and smothered in butter.  Yum!

Do you have a great whole wheat sandwich bread recipe that uses the breadmaker to mix and the oven to bake, and that doesn't contain a lot of expensive ingredients?  Please link it up below or in the comments!

Here's the recipe:

Menu plan 7-16-12: Summer fruit meals

I used up pretty much all my produce this week, so it's time to replenish.  But the good ALDI deals look to be fruit this week, with low prices on peaches, plums, nectarines, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, honeydew, and cherries.  So it looks like we'll be enjoying lots of fruit this week!

So here are my dinner plans:

CVS: Cheap school supplies (part 2)

At CVS this week, I picked up some cheap school supplies.  (I had already bought some at Walgreens a little while earlier.)  As I mentioned in the Walgreens post, this is the best time to pick up school supplies at a bargain.  Each week, a few school supplies will be at incredibly low prices.  The idea is to pick up those items, but not others, each week until you have everything your child or household needs.

And if you don't have kids, you should still hit these sales to get office supplies.  You'll find pens, printer paper, and lots of other household needs on sale at this time.

I also picked up the free after Extra Care Bucks chocolate bar - unlike last week, this time my CVS had them in stock.  And I picked up two cans of tuna and used a Recyclebank coupon to save on them.  But I picked up the wrong cans - it was the chunk light tuna that was on sale, and I picked up the chunk white.  Aargh!

Here's what I got:

Publix: A tip for saving on produce

I took another trip to Publix to pick up some produce as well as two more containers of the Ben and Jerry's ice cream.  At 65¢ per pint after the sale and coupons, I couldn't help myself!  Last time, I bought Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream.  So to be fair, this time I picked up a pint of Jimmy Fallon's Late Night Snack.

And we had a taste-off!  The chocolate-covered potato chips in the Late Night Snack were... different.  If you ate them fast, they just felt crunchy.  But if you slowly chewed them, you tasted the saltiness of the chips.  Interesting, but everyone here liked the chocolate-covered waffle cone pieces of the Americone Dream better.

I also picked up some bananas and some cherries.  Here's a tip to save on produce at Publix: If an item is prepackaged but still sold by the pound, you can take just the amount of the item you want and put it in a separate bag.  For instance, the cherries were already prepackaged in large bags - there were probably 3 pounds or more of cherries in each bag.  That's way too much for us - I'm the only one who likes to eat cherries, and they would go bad before I finished that many.  So I just took off half a pound in a separate bag.

Check with your produce manager before you do this, though.  And you can't do this if the produce item is priced per item.  For instance, you can't open a clamshell of grape tomatoes and take half, because the grape tomatoes are priced per pint, not by the pound.

Here are the details on my trip:

Walgreens: Cheap school supplies (part 1)

It's July, so it must be school supplies sales time!  Each week at the drug stores (and at office supply stores as well), there will be a few items deeply discounted.  To save the most, you should buy only the items you need that are the cheapest that week, and avoid buying the other items on your list.  Trust that eventually pretty much everything will go on deep discount sometime before the start of school.

Besides school supplies, I also picked up some cereal.  At $1.49 per box it wasn't the best price, but I only have a few boxes in my stockpile, so it was good to add two more.

Publix: Ice cream and applesauce

This week's Publix ad was very disappointing for me.  I was hoping for some great deals on tuna fish, or canned beans, or jam, or canola oil - I'm almost out of those items in my stockpile.  But nope, the usual deals on food that I either have plenty stocked, or that I don't have the right coupons for, or that I just don't want to get.

I might have just skipped Publix this week, but for the great deal on Ben & Jerry's ice cream!  I would have bought more, but 1) my freezer is still pretty full, despite eating from it this week; and 2) the manufacturer's coupon stated that you could use only 2 like coupons per shopping trip.  Boo.... I hate that wording!  I will have to make another trip to get more before the sale is over!

Here's what I did get:

ALDI: Where are the great discounts?

It seems like in weeks past, every time I went to ALDI I found great markdown deals in the discount aisle.  But lately, the deals just haven't been there.  And even when I find something marked down, it's usually some food I don't need, like potato chips or rice mixes.  So I've only been buying the usual things at ALDI - dairy, produce, and bread.

Save on guitars

Looking to get a cheap guitar?  Here are some tips:

  • Ask around!  You may have a friend or relative who bought a guitar, played it for a month or two, then quit.  You might be able to get a guitar for free.
  • Check Craigslist for guitars in your area.
  • Go to yard sales - look for ones that say they are selling a guitar in their ad.
  • Do online searches - for instance, search on "Yamaha Guitars" if that's the kind of guitar you want.
  • Go to estate sales or thrift shops.
Hope this helps you save on guitars!

Tabouli Salad (Frugal Food Thursday)

tabbouleh

Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

This summer has just been crazy - I really haven't had a lot of time to create new recipes. So this week I'm featuring one of my favorite summer salads, Tabouli (or Tabbouleh).

I love the combination of the bulgur wheat, parsley, scallions, olive oil, and spices. It's a very flexible recipe - just add whatever raw vegetables you have, chop them fine (maybe in the food processor), and add them to the bulgur. If you have some fresh mint, it would go great in here! But I am too frugal to make that special purchase. Maybe I will grow some in a pot to use it in this recipe.

Here's the recipe:

Cheap plants

Want to add plants to your garden, but don't have a lot of money?  Give these ideas a try:

  • Grow flowers and plants from seed.
  • Get cuttings of plants that you already have, or get cuttings from the gardens of friends or family.
  • Look for deals at the grocery store where you can get gift cards for hardware stores for less than the face value.  Use these cards at the garden shop of those stores.
  • Check all local sources of plants - not only garden shops, but also national chain stores and even grocery stores may sell plants.

Not a surprising total (Wednesday Weekly Shopping)

Coupon Shopping
I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!

I wasn't all that surprised this week to go slightly over my grocery budget.  That's because I shopped at the kosher supermarket to buy ground beef, chicken breasts, and chicken wings.  I generally go over budget when I shop there - but I only go once every five or six weeks, and I go under other weeks, so everything works out!

Here's what I got this week:

Purex Let's Be Honest Giveaway

I really love Purex products!  I regularly buy their laundry detergent when it's on sale at CVS, and this week I purchased their Purex Crystals at CVS, which was on sale in a buy one get one free sale, using 2 prints of this Purex Crystals coupon to save even more!

As a Purex Insider, I wanted to share with you a great promotion that Purex is currently running.  There is also a giveaway involved, so read on!

On April 30th Purex launched their new Let’s Be Honest promotional campaign featuring Second City comedian Molly Erdman. They've created a funny series of short video vignettes sharing honest moments that reflect the ironic truths of everyday Life, Laundry, and Whatever.

You can see these videos at the Purex Let's Be Honest site or on Purex's Youtube channel.

To spread the word about this video series, Purex has teamed with Frugal Follies to give away coupons for a free bottle of Purex Triple Action detergent!   Three winners will be chosen.

The coupon is valued up to $6.00, and it expires on December 31, 2013.  There is a limit of one coupon per shopping trip, and the coupon is not valid with other coupons for the same item.

To enter, use the Rafflecopter below! This giveaway is open to US residents 18 and older.  This giveaway ends on Thursday, July 19, 2012, at 12:01 am.  A winner will be chosen randomly soon after the end of the giveaway.  The winner will be contacted by email, and the winner must respond within 72 hours.  If the winner does not respond, that person will be ruled ineligible and another winner will be chosen.  This giveaway is in no way associated with Facebook.

Menu plan 7-9-12: No room in the freezer!

I got lots of great deals on frozen food at Publix this week.  So much so, that I ran out of room in my freezer!  (I only have the freezer above the refrigerator, not a separate deep freeze.  So my space is limited.)

So I took out some items to defrost.  I took out some whole-wheat rolls and hamburger buns that I had bought cheap at ALDI a while ago, and I took out a whole chicken.  So those items will be the basis of some of our meals this week!  We'll also use up some items from the freezer like sweet potato tots and tortellini.

So here are my dinner plans:

CVS: Out of chocolate!

Without a doubt, the CVS deal I was most excited about was the one for Hershey's Simple Pleasures.  Buy one Hershey's Simple Pleasures at 67¢, receive 67¢ in Extra Care Bucks.  Free chocolate, no coupons needed!

But when I got to my store, I looked around for the product.  I found the 5 oz bag of Simple Pleasures, but not the smaller one.  I asked the clerk where I might find it.  His answer? "We didn't receive it this week."

Grrrrr.

But I still got a couple of good deals - tuna fish with this Recyclebank coupon and Purex Crystals with this coupon.  As a Purex insider, I received a free bottle of Purex Crystals back in January when I did a giveaway for a Jockey sports bra and Purex Crystals.  I really liked the product, so I was happy to see it on sale again, and that there were coupons for it!

And I got my quarterly ECB rewards - only 50¢ this time.  Better than nothing, though.  I need to ramp up my CVS shopping, I think!

Here's the details on what I got this week:
