Sending expired coupons directly to overseas military families

Guest post by Lesley Parkinson for CouponsToTroops

Expired coupons. We all have them! Coupons that we had every intention of using, but for one reason or another we still have the day after their expiration date.

But did you know that even when the expiration dates are past, those coupons still have a valuable purpose? Expired coupons can be used by US military families who are stationed overseas. Since the availability of coupons is so limited there, the Commissaries and Exchanges on base allow the use of coupons up to 6 months past their expiration.

Since 2009, CouponsToTroops has made it to their mission to make it well known about a simple way that anyone can show their support for our overseas military families, simply by mailing expired coupons to them. We have a constantly growing list of families who are stationed on various bases around the world who are interested in receiving coupons from families here in the US and we are happy to put you in touch with a family to mail your coupons to.

CouponsToTroops makes it very easy to mail your coupons. All you have to do is clip the coupons out, put them into an envelope or box, write the address that the military family provides to you and put them in the mail. Since you’re mailing to a US military address, the postage is the same as if you were mailing across town. If you do mail a package that weighs more than 13 ounces, you may need to fill out a customs form, but there’s no added cost for that and your local post office will be able to assist you with that. Shipments to Guam and Puerto Rico do not require a customs form, since they are both US territories.

You do not have to count the coupons or add up the value and report to us. Sorting into categories, such as (Food and Non-Food or Food, Non-Food, Health & Beauty, Pets and Baby) is recommended IF you are sending a large selection of coupons, but it is not required. And of course the coupons do not need to be expired – if you send current coupons, that just allows the military families a longer timeframe to use them.

There are several websites out there that have programs to get the coupons overseas, but we are one of the few that recommend sending your coupons directly to an individual family. Some sites require you to ‘adopt’ a base and provide you with an address to mail to, often the Family Support Center on base. The advantage to our program is that you know without a doubt that your coupons are getting right into the hands of a family that will use them (or share their extras with others on base) and you’re more likely to receive an acknowledgement that they have been received. We often hear from military families who say that the support centers do not have enough volunteers to get the coupons distributed quickly so the backrooms are filled with stacks of boxes and envelopes of coupons, that will ultimately end up in the trash because they are so past expiration by the time they reach a military family.

Other websites direct you to mail to a collection point in the US and they will repackage them and mail them overseas for you. The reason that we do not recommend this is that since it costs the same exact postage to mail them directly overseas yourself, by going through a collection point, it will take the coupons longer to reach the military families. As it is sending directly overseas from the US can take up to a few weeks, but when you add in the time it takes to send to a collection point, and then wait for the coupons to be rebundled and remailed from there, it could be well over a month or longer before they are received overseas. There’s just no way of telling how quick of a turnaround time the collection point has to get them mailed out again. There very well could be a stack of boxes and envelopes sitting there, waiting to be repackaged and remailed. Coupons cannot help the military families to save money until they have the coupons in their hands.

If you are interested in mailing your expired and extra coupons to a military family who is stationed overseas, please send an email to admin@couponstotroops.com to request to be matched up with a family. At this time we have families stationed in Belgium, Cuba, Germany, Guam, Italy, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom, who are patiently waiting for coupons to be sent their way.

Please see our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CouponsToTroops or email us for more information.

On behalf of all of the military families on our contact list – ‘Thank you for your support!’

Elevate Your Finances in 2011 - July update

Welcome to Elevate Your Finances in 2011!

Time to update my financial goals, which I posted at the beginning of the year.

My main financial goal is to pay off 50% of the balance (as of 12/31/10) of our home equity line this year.

This month wasn't as good as last month and the month before.  We were only able to make a small extra payment on the debt (and the interest, of course), due to cash-flowing some summer expenses.  But we did not go into more debt for those summer expenses, so that is good!  Once the summer is over, it'll be nose to the grindstone, shoulder to the wheel to start making some good headway on the debt!

How are you doing on your financial goals this year? Leave a comment below!

Frugal Food Thursday: Apple-Banana Bread

banana bread
Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

I like to eat, eat, eat, apples and bananas!

We get both cheaply at ALDI.  But sometimes the bagged apples have an apple or two (ore more) with a big bruise on it, not good for sending in school lunch bags.  And the bananas tend to go brown before we've eaten all of them.

So here's a recipe that turns both ingredients into something yummy: Apple-Banana Bread.

I created this recipe based on one from Cooks.com's recipe search some years ago.  It's a go-to recipe when produce is going bad - and it sends fine in school lunch bags!

APPLE-BANANA BREAD

1 cup sugar
1 stick (8 oz) butter, softened
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
3 very ripe bananas
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups flour
2-3 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped.

Cream sugar and butter together.  Add egg and vanilla and mix well.  In a separate bowl, mash up the ripe bananas with a fork, then add to the sugar mixture.

In a separate bowl, mix the baking soda and flour together.  Add flour mixture to sugar mixture and mix until all ingredients are moistened.

Add chopped apples until they are incorporated into the batter.

Grease and flour 2 bread pans.  Fill with mixture until pans are 2/3 full.  Bake at 350 for one hour, covering the tops of the pans lightly with aluminum foil.  Remove the foil and bake for 10 more minutes or until a knife inserted in the bread comes out clean.

There are lots more cheap recipes posted here at Frugal FolliesClick here for the list!

Wednesday Weekly Shopping: Or, not shopping

I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!

I'd love to tell you all about the shopping I did this week, but there isn't much to say.

I was eating from my pantry last week, so I only stopped into the grocery stores to get a few basic items and a few must-have deals.  I even skipped the drug stores this week.

Here's what I did get:

ALDI: Spent $8.75

Publix: Spent $11.33, saved $15.74

Overall, this week I spent $20.08 for items which retail for $41.86, or a 52% savings based on the retail value of the products at the stores where they were purchased.  (But don't compare percentages!)  My real savings (how much more I'd spend if I bought those items at the lowest possible regular price in my area) was approximately $9.99.

For the year (30 weeks), I've spent $2205.49 for items which retail for $4305.40, and saved $2099.91, or a 49% savings. That's an average of $73.52 spent each week for a family of five (husband, wife, and daughters ages 13, 10, and 6), including lots of fresh produce, dairy items, and kosher meat.

See all my shopping here.

How did your shopping go this week? What bargains did you get? Please leave a link to your blog post about your weekly shopping. The aim is not to brag, but to inspire!  Please link up directly to your post, not to the blog itself. I'd appreciate it if you put a link to Wednesday Weekly Shopping in your post as well. If you don't have a blog, please leave a comment!

Don't Forget the Clearance Sections

Guest post from Kim from My Lovely Coupon Life

Hi, I'm Kim. I was introduced to the wonderful world of couponing a few months ago and have become quite the expert on leaving CVS and Rite Aid with tons of product and paying only pennies. I have found that most couponing websites overlook a large part of saving money.

What these sites are missing is the clearance sections. A quick run the the clearance section can make for a great shopping trip. This summer sunscreen is an item most people need. I have scored Coppertone, Aveeno, and Neutrogena sunscreen in the clearance sections of Rite Aid for as little as $3 each.

I found these sunscreens marked down to around $5. Rite Aid allows you to pair store and manufacturer coupons for a single item. Don't forget that these coupons still work on clearance items. Just last week I had a store and manufacturer coupon each for $1 off Coppertone. I found Coppertone in the clearance section for $5.24, after coupons this was $3.24.

When you are out shopping, swing by the clearance section and take a look. If you have your coupons with you it will be easy to pair up items with the coupons you have. If you don't find any match ups, that's ok! Be sure to jot down the items you are interested in and the clearance prices. Once you get home check a coupon database on the internet to see if there are any match ups that would make for a great deal. Next time you are out go back and score some great deals. Don't worry, unless its a super excellent price the clearance items will be there.

Happy couponing!

Kim is a mom and registered nurse who picked up couponing as a hobby with her husband. She was soon hooked and is now dedicated to helping others save! Please visit her blog at mylovelycouponlife.blogspot.com.

Save on shoes!

Shoes are definitely a thorn in our family's clothing budget.  A pair of kids' shoes at the fancy shoe store can cost upwards of $60!  And don't get me started on the cost of women's shoes.

Here's a way to save on shoes. Try Sole Society - sign up for free and get discounted prices on designer shoes. I can't vouch for them since I'm not a customer, but if you want to save on shoes, give it a try!

Western Beef opens in Pembroke Pines, Florida

Good news for shoppers in Pembroke Pines and all of Southwest Broward County in Florida: Western Beef has now opened in your area!

The new store is located at 8030 Pines Blvd., on the southwest corner of Pines Blvd. and S. University Drive. The hours of the store are Sunday through Saturday, 7:00 am - 10:00 pm.

Western Beef is a New York-based chain with 21 stores in the New York metropolitan area and now 2 in Florida. The other Florida store is located at 23072 Sandalfoot Plaza Dr. in Boca Raton, facing State Rd. 7/US Hwy. 441, between Hillsboro Blvd. to the south and Palmetto Park Rd. to the north.

I like Western Beef for their low-cost produce, lemon juice, and Hispanic groceries. They also have a butcher room - not a case, but an entire room filled with meat. Bring your sweater!

With this store as well as ALDI a few miles down the street (at 11330 Pines Blvd.), Pembroke Pines residents have lots of cheap grocery options!

Publix: Lots of variety

I am having an eat from the pantry week this week, so I didn't want to buy too much at Publix. But I couldn't resist some of the great deals.

Smucker's preserves were on buy one, get one free. I have lots of strawberry preserves (from this CVS trip and from this other CVS trip) as well as homemade mango jam, but I decided to add four more jars to my stash, two cherry preserves and two blueberry preserves. Now I have lots of varieties to choose from!

I also had a raincheck for the Barilla Piccolini pasta that was on sale two weeks ago. Since I'm not buying much this week, this seemed like a good time to use it. I got four boxes of pasta - after coupons, they were 22¢ each.

Here's my full trip:

4 Barilla Piccolini @ BOGO $1.53 (with raincheck) = $3.06
- 4 $0.55/1 Barilla Piccolini, exp. 8/21/11 (SS 06/26/11)
= 86¢ for four, or 22¢ each

4 Smuckers preserves @ BOGO $3.39 = $6.78
- 2 $1/2 Select Smucker's Products, exp. 7/30 (RP 5/22/11)
= $4.78 for four, or $1.13 each

2 Quaker Oatmeal @ BOGO $3.89 (no coupons)

3 Publix tomatoes @ 60¢ = $1.80 (no coupons)

Total spent: $11.33
Total saved compared to Publix full prices: $15.74

ALDI: Great deal on cottage cheese

I found a great deal at ALDI! I went to just buy a couple of things, including cottage cheese, which is normally $1.99 for a 24-oz container.

When I went to get it, I found that it had been marked down to just 50¢ each! It seems that the sell-by date was the next day. But I figure that the product will still be good for a few more days, so I bought two.

      Here's what I got:

      2 bags bagels @ $1.49 = $2.98
      1 flour tortillas @ 99¢
      1 milk @ $2.39
      2 cottage cheese @ 50¢ = $1.00
      1 blueberries @ $1.39

      Total spent: $8.75

Frugal Food Thursday: Dried Fruit Balls

      dates
Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday!  If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!

Last week, I posted my mom's recipe for macaroni and cheese. This week I'm featuring another of her recipes, dried fruit balls.

I'm not sure where she originally got this recipe, but she brought it down to me just before my eldest daughter's bat mitzvah weekend.  We had over 50 people over for dinner Friday night and for sandwiches Saturday night, and she and my mother-in-law made desserts for both nights for all those people.  Of course we had lots of brownies and cookies, but my mom also made this dessert.

The dates (pictured above - I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the completed recipe) and cranberries give the fruit balls a sweetness, so added sugar really isn't necessary.  But we add a little powdered sugar on the outside to keep the fruit balls from sticking to each other.

Dried fruit isn't the most economical ingredient, but if you watch for sales, you can get a good deal.  They are often on sale around Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Of course, the vanilla wafers can be bought cheaply throughout the year.  Or, check out ALDI - they have several different kinds of dried fruit for a low cost.

      DRIED FRUIT BALLS

      1 lb pitted dates
      2 cups crushed vanilla wafers
      1/4 cup dried cranberries
      1/4 cup chopped walnuts
      6 tbsp orange juice concentrate
      2 tbsp powdered sugar

Chop dates and crush cookies.  Combine with cranberries, nuts, and orange juice concentrate.  Shape into small balls.  Roll in powdered sugar.  Store in a tightly covered container in a cool location.

This week was so, so much better than last week!

I didn't make the mistake of buying too much at the drug stores, because there wasn't all that much to get.  And I was able to load up on canned beans, frozen ravioli, and other delicious and healthy ingredients that will work their way into my menu plan in the next several weeks.

Here's what I got this week (click on the link below the picture for more details about the trip):

I also purchased a bunch of bananas at Publix for $1.26.

Overall, this week I spent $72.74 for items which retail for $132.84, or a 45% savings based on the retail value of the products at the stores where they were purchased.  (But don't compare percentages!)  My real savings (how much more I'd spend if I bought those items at the lowest possible regular price in my area) was approximately $22.74.

For the year (29 weeks), I've spent $2185.41 for items which retail for $4263.54, and saved $2078.13, or a 49% savings. That's an average of $75.36 spent each week for a family of five (husband, wife, and daughters ages 13, 10, and 6), including lots of fresh produce, dairy items, and kosher meat.

      See all my shopping here.
