Look around for savings!

When you go to the grocery store, do you just rush in, get the stuff on your list, and get out as quickly as possible? (Or, worse, do you rush in, take what looks good right now, and get out?)

If you can, try taking a few extra minutes to look around the store.  You never know what you might find that will help you save!

Unadvertised deals
While it's important to check your local grocery ad when making your shopping list, there sometimes can be unadvertised deals at the store as well.  These are deals from the manufacturers that didn't make it into the ad in time.  They may be in a special bin near the front of the store, or at their usual spot on the shelves.

Some bloggers will write posts about these deals when they hear about them, so that you can look for them yourself when you go to the store.  Try doing a search for "[store name] unadvertised deals [start date of ad]".  You might find some great deals that you wouldn't know about otherwise!

Manager's specials
Sometimes a store has too many of  items that will reach their expiration soon, so the store will lower their price to move them out!  For instance, yesterday I was at ALDI to pick up milk, but I decided to check out the bread area.  (It's a small store, so this wasn't really out of my way).  I found bread for 25 cents!  I asked an employee about this great deal, and he said that the bread was set to expire in five days.  I bought five loaves, as many as would fit into the empty space in the freezer above my refrigerator (I need to think about getting a separate freezer!)

Definitely check any areas with items that might spoil.  Produce departments might have a small section with overripe bananas and other fruit.  Meat can be marked down if it's on its final day of freshness (but will be fine to freeze).  Check the bakery, and even milk can be found on sale sometimes.  Just walk a circuit around the edges of your store and see what's available!

Besides items nearing their expiration, managers might also try to clear shelves of products that they will no longer be carrying.  To get them off as quickly as possible, they may lower the price, so they can use the shelf space for more profitable merchandise. The only way to find these deals is to check the aisles and look.  One time at Winn-Dixie, I found small jars of store brand peanut butter that were severely marked down.  I guess the store was not going to carry that particular size anymore.  There were only a few jars left by the time I got there, but I cleaned them out!

Coupons
As you walk around the store, keep your eyes peeled for display stands - they might contain coupon books!  These can be either from the store or from the manufacturer.  They may be advertised as a recipe booklet, but might contain coupons as well.  In the last few weeks, I've found several booklets (read here, here, and here).  Also look for tearpad coupons, which might be on a display stand, or perhaps attached to the shelves.  And look for "blinkie" coupons, coupons given out by small machines connected to the shelves which have a blinking light (hence the name).

I hope you'll find more than just your shopping list items on your next trip to the store!

Sharing your shopping successes = bragging?

Last week, I wrote a post about not comparing your savings percentage with others.  I got a lot of positive feedback about this article, including one anonymous poster who shared the following:

This post is to the point and made me realize that my time/energy is best spent saving enough for ME and MY family and not concerning myself with the overload of blogs out there dedicated to bragging about their percentages off.
This comment got me thinking... are those of us who share our shopping successes bragging about them?

Well, on the one hand, I can see the writer's point.  Just the act of saying, "See, look what I bought!" can seem like bragging to another person who didn't get the same deals, or can't get the same deals. And though my husband is proud of me for trimming our food budget down, sometimes it is nice to share with a community of people who share the same interests in saving that I do, in hopes that I'll get positive feedback from them.  It can be tempting to point out, "Hey!  Look what I did! Aren't I amazing?"  And that can slide into bragging.

But when I check out blogs as I go about my weekly linkups, I find that the blogs I'm most drawn to are those that give personal experience.  There are many blogs that simply list deals and coupons and freebies, and those are certainly helpful.  However,  I don't have as much as an emotional pull toward them.  But when a blogger shows how they used those deals to help their own family, that makes me want to read more and more.  Blogs about saving money just wouldn't be as interesting to me if they didn't contain personal experiences.

I think most bloggers (including myself) don't start their blogs to brag about their success, but to help others.  To show that deals and coupons and freebies aren't just a way to spend less money as an end to itself, but as a means to an end - to help achieve goals.  I think most bloggers want to inspire readers to do the best that they can, so that the readers can achieve their goals, too.

So though I can see that some might see sharing shopping successes as bragging, I don't see it that way.  As long as you're doing it with an eye toward inspiring and helping others, I say, keep sharing!

ALDI Deerfield Beach: Bread for 25¢!

My apologies to the Frugal Follies readers throughout the United States and the world, but I have a deal that's just for my local South Florida readers.

Today only, bread is 25¢ per loaf at ALDI in Deerfield Beach!  I went in to buy a gallon of milk there (at $1.99, it's the cheapest milk in South Florida), and found the special deal.  I asked an employee about it; he said that the bread was set to expire in five days, so the store needed to move it out.

Bread freezes well, so don't worry too much about the expiration date!  I wouldn't keep it in the freezer for more than a couple of weeks, though, so don't go crazy with your buying.  And certainly use it up within five days after you defrost the bread.

I also found two other great deals there.  Celery was 25¢ per package, and bananas, normally 39¢ per pound, were buy one package, get one package free.  I don't know how long these deals will last, though.

No wonder that ALDI is now my favorite store!

CVS: 20% off coupon

Want even more great savings from CVS? Go to the CVS Facebook page and like them, and you'll be able to print out a Holiday Pass coupon for 20% off almost all merchandise!

You'll need a Extra Care card for this deal. If you don't have one, you can go to any store and get one for free. You'll also need to give your email address.

This offer does not apply to sales or discounted merchandise. It also excludes milk, bread, alcohol, gift cards, lottery, money orders, prescriptions, postage stamps, pre-paid cards, tobacco products, newspapers, magazines, iPad, Lookbook, and Netbook.

The coupon offer is good until 12/3; the coupon itself is good until 12/5. Since it can't be used on sales items, I'd advise using it toward items that are full price but have rebates available, or items that you need right now but aren't currently on sale at CVS or elsewhere for less.

Walgreens: 15% discount on December 1st!

Walgreens is doing their Friends & Family Event on 12/1/10! On that day, you'll be able to get 15% off eligible store purchases and 20% off Walgreens brand items with the event coupon.

To get this discount, you'll need to check out at the photo or cosmetics counter only (only those registers have the key to allow the discount).

Not eligible are prescriptions, dairy products, cigarettes, alcohol, gift cards, newspapers, magazines, stamps, and phone cards.

I love this deal... I recall taking it to its full advantage last year, and I'll delay my Walgreens shopping until Wednesday to do it again!  This is a great deal to combine with deals that will create Reigster Rewards, since it will help lower your out-of-pocket costs!

Gift card deals

Got someone on your list who's tough to shop for?  Gift cards are always a good idea.  And, better yet, get a gift card that gives you a gift, too!

Keep in mind that you cannot use Extra Care Bucks at CVS nor Register Rewards at Walgreens to pay for gift cards.  Most coupons that are for dollars off a certain purchase will not allow gift card purchases, either.  Read the fine print on any coupons to be sure.  I thought I had a great deal planned yesterday, using my ECBs to buy iTunes gift cards from CVS for my niece and nephew, but the cashier reminded me that I couldn't use ECBs to pay.  Darn, another good deal idea gone bad...

Here are some deals on gift cards this week:

CVS: (through 12/4)

  • Buy three American Express prepaid gift cards, get $10 in Extra Care Bucks (1 offer per household)
  • Buy $50 in iTunes gift cards, get $10 in Extra Care Bucks (4 offers per household)
  • Buy $25 e-gift card, get $5 e-gift card (6 offers per household)
Publix: (through 12/1)
  • Buy one $50 American Express gift card, get $10 off
  • Buy one $50 BP, Shell, Chevron/Texaco, or Hess gas card, get $10 off (with a purchase of $25 or more)
Winn-Dixie (through 11/30):
  • Buy $50 in any gift cards, get $5 off (up to $300 in cards)
  • Get a flu shot, get $10 gift card free

Menu Plan 11/29/10: What's for breakfast?

I've been doing my menu plans for quite a while now, but I only list what we are having for dinner.  But, you might wonder, what does the Frugal Follies household have for breakfast and lunch?

Breakfast generally is each person for themselves.  Usually we will have either cold cereal (bought on sale with coupons), instant oatmeal (same), or toast.  Saturdays usually are leftover challah with cream cheese.  One day a week, I'll make scrambled eggs (with the whites left over from making challah, and a few more whole eggs thrown in) with cheese on top.  If we have any leftover French toast or pancakes, we might have that.  If I have the crockpot out already (from doing some freezer cooking, for instance), I might make some crockpot oatmeal.

I pack lunch for the kids for school days, although one day a week I will pay for a school lunch if they want.  Lunch is usually a sandwich (peanut butter and jelly, cream cheese and jelly, or sliced cheese usually), a piece of fruit, and homemade cookies (like my peanut butter cookies) that we make over the weekend as a family project.

My husband also brown-bags it except for on Fridays, when he goes out to a mall food court with friends from his old job, to keep in contact with them.  The other days, he usually takes leftovers (like chili or beef stew) and some cut-up vegetables.  He also brings fruit once a week to work to have as snacks.

And me?  I also eat leftovers for lunch, although usually I'm blogging during lunch so I'll just eat a little something and then get right back to work!

And here's what's for dinner this week:

Monday - turkey stir-fry over brown rice (yes, we still have leftovers)

Tuesday - lasagna roll-ups, salad

Wednesday - pepper and onion pizza on  whole wheat pizza dough, fruit

Thursday - veggie chili over whole-wheat pasta

Friday - Honey Mustard Herb Chicken, kasha varnishkes, salad, challah

Saturday -grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup, cut-up veggies

Sunday - takeout!

CVS and Walgreens: Money-making deals

So I said I wasn't shopping on Black Friday, and I didn't. But I did pop in quickly to CVS and Walgreens while I was out getting cheap cheese and toilet paper at Winn-Dixie.  And after seeing how little was on the shelves, I now wish I had gone first thing Thanksgiving Day.  I'm putting that on next year's to-do list.

Walgreens:
2 Olay body wash @ $3.49 each
2 $1 off coupons
Get back $2.50 in RRs
Total = $2.48 for two, or $1.24 each
(I thought there was a limit of 2 for this deal, and I was wrong.  If I had to do it again, I'd do each body wash in a separate transaction.)

CVS:
2 Colgate Sensitive @ $3.99
2 $1 off coupons
Get back $7.98 in ECBs
Total = $2 overage!

1 Eucerin skin lotion @ $6.99
$1 off coupon
Get back $6.99 in ECBs
Total = $1 overage!

1 Xtra laundry detergent @ $1.99
Get back $1 in ECBs
Total = 99¢

1 Bioluxe trial-size conditioner $ 1.99
FREE product coupon from CVS (no longer available)
Total = FREE!

Be sure to check out all the deals I got last week at Wednesday Weekly Shopping, and link up your own deals as well!

Winn-Dixie: Toilet paper and cheese

I stopped by Winn-Dixie today to hit their one-day sale to get some good deals on cheese and toilet paper.  I didn't have any more of the $1 off coupons for Kraft cheees with a touch of Philly - but that didn't matter, since my store didn't carry that line.  (I have found the cheese at Target.)

Winn-Dixie also had a good deal on toilet paper.  I try to spend less than 50¢ per double roll, so this was a good deal.  Maybe not the best, but we can always use toilet paper.

4 Kraft shredded cheese @ 99¢
- 2 $1/2 coupons for Kraft cheese
= 4 for $1.96, or 49¢ each

1 Cottonelle 12 pack @ $4.99
- 50¢ off coupon
= $4.49 for 12 rolls of toilet paper, or 37¢ each

Be sure to check out all the deals I got last week at Wednesday Weekly Shopping, and link up your own deals as well!

Free trial of All You magazine

Veteran coupon clippers know that there are some great coupons in All You magazine - in fact, here's a list of coupons in the December issue. I usually find that I save more in coupons than the magazine costs me.

You can purchase All You at Walmart, but I definitely recommend getting a subscription. (I got my subscription during a magazine drive at my daughter's school. It helps me, and it helps the school, too.)

Here's a chance to test-drive the magazine to see if the coupons save you more money than the cost of the subscription. Sign up to get a free trial issue of All You. Once you've seen how much you personally save with the coupons, you can decide if a subscription makes sense for you.

They're also having a sweepstakes where the winner will receive $15,000.

So give it a try! Click here for your free trial issue.

Free Slurpee on Purple Friday

Here's a great freebie... Like Slurpees on Facebook and you'll be able to print out and redeem a coupon for a free Slurpee from participating 7-Eleven stores on Friday, November 26. Because of this promotion, 7-Eleven has dubbed tomorrow "Purple Friday" (a much better name than Black Friday, I think!)

I won't be getting this deal because I'm not shopping on Black Friday... but if you are, this would be great!

Recipe: Sweet Potato and Pineapple Casserole

(Looking for Thanksgiving recipes?  Try out this free 24 Thanksgiving Dinner Recipes and Fall Craft Projects e-book! And to save on your Thanksgiving dinner, check out these Thanksgiving coupons.)

Happy Thanksgiving from Frugal Follies!

This is a dish I'll be serving today, passed down to me from my mom. I made a few changes to it, though. It's delicious! I made it cheaply by purchasing sweet potatoes at Walmart for 28¢ per pound, the cheapest price I saw anywhere this week. The pineapple was purchased at ALDI, and the Special K was bought on sale with coupons.  (To see all my bargain shopping, check out Wednesday Weekly Shopping.)

Sweet Potato and Pineapple Casserole from Frugal Follies

3 lbs. whole sweet potatoes
8 oz crushed pineapple, undrained
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp brown sugar
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted

Crunchy topping:
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
2 cups Special K cereal
1 tsp cinnamon

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Wash sweet potatoes, removing any eyes. Prick sweet potatoes several times each with a fork. Microwave for 12 minutes, turning sweet potatoes over halfway through. Allow sweet potatoes to cool, then remove skins from the flesh and put in a large mixing bowl. Mash the sweet potato flesh with a potato masher.

Add pineapple, spices, sugar, and butter or margarine and mix well. Place mixture in a 9x9 casserole dish.

Make crunchy topping: In a medium bowl, mix brown sugar, melted butter or margarine, and Special K together until the cereal pieces are coated. Spread the crunchy topping evenly on top of the sweet potato mixture. Sprinkle with cinnamon

Bake for 30 minutes, uncovered, or until the topping is brown and crisp.

Wednesday Weekly Shopping: My new favorite store

I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below!

This week, I did a lot of shopping at the new ALDI.  Shopping there is becoming a regular stop with me.  It has by far the cheapest milk, eggs, and juice in my area, items that I buy pretty much every week, and that I rarely find on sale or have a coupon for.

But I still love finding bargains!  I also bought cheese and soup at Target, Unilever products at CVS, and lots of great deals at Publix.  I stopped quickly into Walmart to get some cheap sweet potatoes, and into Winn-Dixie to buy some tea bags, since I was in that shopping plaza to pick up a bunch of free coupon inserts (the 11/14 Smartsource had a coupon for Goodnites, which one of my daughters uses, so I picked up several more than I usually do).  And, I stopped into Walgreens three times to stock up on mushrooms and mandarin oranges.

Overall, I spent $76.59 for items worth $152.05, or a 50% savings.  (But don't compare percentages!)

See all my shopping here.

Have a great Thanksgiving!  I won't be shopping on Black Friday... click on the link to find out why!

Check out the following to see how others shopped this week!

How did your shopping go this week? What bargains did you get? Please leave a link to your blog post about your weekly shopping. Please link up directly to your post, not to the blog itself. I'd appreciate it if you put a link to Wednesday Weekly Shopping in your post as well. If you don't have a blog, please leave a comment!
