Wednesday Weekly Shopping: Walgreens ho!

I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below!

This week, I spent a lot of time in Walgreens, looking for the amazing free after Register Rewards deals they had in the previous week's flyer.  Luckily, Walgreens stores are on just about every street corner in this area.  I'm not kidding.  Going down the main road about four miles, I pass three stores.  Turn down one of the cross streets and go a couple of miles, I pass two more.  And I know of a few other stores as well.

But, the proximity didn't really help all that much - the stores were out of everything, for the most part.  I did manage to snag a couple of items, but not as many as I'd hoped for.  Oh, well.

Another great shopping find this week was a Winn-Dixie store that was closing and moving to a new location.  I was hoping for some amazing deals like I found at the Albertson's closing sale, but they were not as great as I'd hoped.  There were no unusual sales on dry goods, but it was 50% off all remaining frozen food and dairy.  I didn't see any great deals on frozen food (mostly overpriced frozen dinners), but I was able to get milk, cheese, margarine, and cream cheese for half price - a great deal in my book!

Overall, I spent $75.01 ($5 under budget) for groceries worth $139.29, or a 46% savings.

See all my shopping here.

June Freezer Cooking Days: Cooking list

Time once again for June Freezer Cooking Days, hosted by FishMama at Life as MOM. (Crystal at Money Saving Mom is taking the month off.)

As usual, I'll be making components of meals, and not meals themselves.  Why not make full meals?  I have pretty picky children, who don't like casseroles - but they'll eat individual components of dishes.  So I prefer to make parts of meals, then put them together later.

I also do this to save money!  I cook beans in the crockpot and freeze them in meal-sized portions to save money on buying canned beans.  I make my own chicken broth, and thus don't have to have all the sodium and chemicals in canned broth.  And I use up veggies that are about to go bad, and thus would be thrown away, to make sauces that can then be used in meals.

Here's what I have planned for this weekend:

Chicken broth (from chicken carcasses stored in the freezer)
Shredded chicken - I'm roasting a whole chicken, deboning it, shredding the meat and putting it into meal-sized portions
White beans cooked in the crockpot
Oven-roasted potato wedges
4 loaves whole wheat French bread
tomato sauce
4 rolls Chewy Chocolatey Freezer Cookies

Please follow me on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook to follow my progress throughout the weekend!

Wednesday Weekly Shopping: I heart barbecues and drug store shopping

I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below!

It was an easy week of shopping this week.  We attended a barbecue on Monday - I made lots of side dishes from ingredients I had on hand, plus a few items like cabbage for the cole slaw that I didn't already have. We received lots of leftovers from the barbecue, so much that I needed to do very little food shopping on Tuesday.  And, there were lots of great deals at both CVS and Walgreens, and I used lots of coupons and Register Rewards/Extra Care Bucks, so much of those trips were free, or close to it!

In sum, this week I spent $57.90 on groceries (well below my budgeted amount of $80 for a family of five) for $129.91 in groceries and drug store items, for a savings percentage of 55%.

See all my shopping here.
